Nano-imprint technology has been vigorously studied by many researchers for it is one of the most promising technologies for manufacturing the pattern with its critical dimension below 100nm. In the nano-imprint technology, nano patterns are transferred on a polymer film and the transferred patterns are used as an etch mask to define the designed patterns on a substrate or a metal layer. To this end, it is important to keep the residual thickness of the imprinted polymer film uniform. In this study, a novel measurement technique to measure the residual thickness of films is proposed based on nanoindentation theory. This technique has advantages of saving time and measuring the residual thickness of highly-localized portions in comparison with other techniques, but has limitation of requiring calibration process.
Recently there has been a great world-wide interest in developing and characterizing new nano-structured materials. These newly developed materials are often prepared in limited quantities and shapes unsuitable for the extensive mechanical testing. The development of depth sensing indentation methods have introduced the advantage of load and depth measurement during the indentation cycle. In the present work, ZnO thin films are prepared on Si(111), Si(100) substrates at different temperatures by pulsed laser deposition(PLD) method. Because the potential energy in c-axis is low, the films always show c-axis orientation at the optimized conditions in spite of the different substrates. Thin films are investigated by X-ray diffractometer and Nano indentation equipment. From these measurements it is possible to get elastic modulus and hardness of ZnO thin films on Si substrates.
The EAM simulation of nanoindentation was performed to investigate misfit dislocation slip in the Ag/Cu. The film layer, whose thickness in the range of 2-5nm, was indented by a spherical indenter with the N$\'{o}$se-Hoover thermostat condition. The simulation shows that the indentation position relative to misfit dislocation (MFD) has the effect on the dislocation, glide up or cross slip, for Ag film layer thickness less than 4 nm. Elastic energy variation during MFDs slip was revealed to be a key factor for the softening of Ag/Cu. The critical film layer thickness was evaluated for each case of Ag/Cu according to the spline extrapolation technique.

The interfacial transition zone(ITZ) which is the boundary layer between cement composites and aggregates is considered to be the region of gradual transition, heterogeneous, and the weakest part of concrete. For the development of lightweight high strength concrete, it is essential to evaluate the mechanical properties of ITZ between high strength concrete with low water-binder ratio and lightweight aggregates. However, the mechanical properties of ITZ are not well established due to its high porosity and complex structure. Furthermore, the properties of ITZ in concrete using lightweight aggregates are dominated by more various variations (e.g. water-binder ratio, water absorption capacity of aggregate, curing conditions) than normal-weight aggregate concrete. This study aims to elucidate the mechanical properties of ITZ in lightweight high-strength cement composites according to the types of aggregates and the aggregate sizes. Nanoindentation analysis was used to evaluate the elastic modulus of ITZ between high strength cement composites with the water-binder ratio of 0.2 and normal sand, lightweight aggregate with different aggregate siz es of 2mm and 5mm in this study.

New technologies for water purification are continuously emerging to address global water quality problems, and one such technology involves advanced hermetic water purification facilities made by concrete that utilize ozone treatment processes. Better knowledge about surface deterioration of epoxy coating exposed to ozone treatment is needed as a foundation for development of improved methods and materials in the future. This study utilized atomic force microscopy (AFM), nanoindentation methods, and existing indirect methods such as visual observation, changes in mass, surface observation and chrominance analysis, to evaluate epoxy water-resistance and anti-corrosiveness. This study considered six different epoxy formulations to assess typical degradation characteristics of epoxy surfaces with regard to water-resistance/anti-corrosiveness. AFM and nanoindentation techniques emerged as promising direct methods with potential to provide quantitative measures of surface quality that are improvements upon existing indirect methods. The experiments also confirmed that some of the epoxy-coatings were severely iMPacted by ozone exposure, and thus the results demonstrate that concern about such deterioration is justified.
