Magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by thermal decomposition and adsorbed with lecithin by applying ultrasonic. The size and saturation magnetization of magnetic nanoparticles were observed with different lecithin concentration, and the maximum tolerated dose (HTD) and toxicity of magnetic fluid was investigated through a biological test. The thickness of lecithin-adsorption layer increased non-linearly with increasing amounts of added lecithin, and the desirable adsorption amount was observed in the lecithin concentration of 20%(w/v). The dispersibility and magnetic properties of lecithin-adsorbed magnetic nanoparticles were most excellent when the ultrasonic exposure time was 1.5h. Also, the maximum tolerated concentration with best cell viability was $32{\mu}g/ml$ in vitro test, and lecithin-adsorbed magnetic fluids improved the biocompatibility by 1.2 times compared with bare magnetite fluids in vivo.
We have synthesized uniform nanometer sized magnetite particles using chemical coprecipitation technique through a sonochemical method with surfactant such as oleic acid. Magnetite phase nanoparticles could be observed from X-ray diffraction. Magnetite nanoparticles is surface phase morphology and biopolymer-microspheres for Application Medical. Magnetite nanoparticles coated biopolymer. Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to image the coated nanoparticles. Magnetic colloid suspensions containing particles with sodium oleate, chitosan and $\beta$-glucan have been prepared. The morphology of the magnetic biopolymer microsphere particles were characterized using optical microscope. Magnetic hysteresis measurement were performed using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer at room temperature to investigate the magnetic properties of the biopolymer microspheres and magnetite coated biopolymer including magnetite nanoparticles. Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging was used to investigate biopolymer coated nanoparticles and biopolymer microspheres.

The uniform nanofibers of poly(L-lactide-$co$-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PLCL) with different contents of marine collagen (MC) were successfully prepared by electrospinning method. The effects of the major parameters in electrospinning process such as tip to target distance (TTD), voltage, nozzle size and flow rate on the average diameter of the electrospun nanofiber were investigated in generating composite nanofiber. The diameter and morphology of the nanofibers were confirmed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, we measured a water contact angle to determine the surface wettability of the nanofibers. The average diameter of the nanofibers decreased as the value of TTD, MC contents, and voltages increased in comparison with that of pristine PLCL nanofiber. In contrast, the diameter of the nanofibers increased as the flow rate and inner diameter of nozzle increased in comparison with that of pristine PLCL. In addition, the hydrophilicity of the nanofiber and attachment of MG-63 cells on the sheets increased as incorporated collagen contents increased. Therefore, the marine collagen would be a potential material to enhance cellular interactivity of synthetic materials by mimicking the natural tissue.
Fluorescence imaging is widely used to image cells or small animals due to its high temporal and spatial resolution. Because conventional fluorescence imaging uses visible light, the penetration depth of light within the tissue is low, phototoxicity may occur due to visible light, and the detection sensitivity is lowered due to interference by background autofluorescence. In order to overcome this limitation, long-wavelength light should be used, and fluorescence imaging using near-infrared-I (NIR-I) in the region of 700~900 nm has been developed. To further improve imaging quality, researchers are interested in using a longer wavelength light, near-infrared-II (NIR-II) ranging from 1000 to 1700 nm. In the NIR-II region, light scattering is further minimized, and the penetration depth of light in the tissue is improved up to about 10 mm, and autofluorescence of the tissue is reduced, enabling high sensitivity and resolution fluorescence imaging. In this review, among various NIR-II fluorescence imaging probes, inorganic nanoparticle-based probes with excellent photostability and easily tunable emission wavelength were described, focusing on single-walled carbon nanotubes, quantum dots, and lanthanide nanoparticles.

Microplastics and nanoplastics (NMPs) are considered one of hazardous contaminants in marine ecosystems due to their toxic effects, such as reproduction disorder and oxidative stress, on marine organisms. Although water temperature is rising due to global climate change, little information on the toxicological interaction between NMPs and temperature is available. Therefore, in this study, we confirmed the toxicity of NMPs (polystyrene [PS] beads; 0.05- and 6-㎛) on brackish water fleas (Diaphanosoma celebensis) depending on increased temperature (30℃ and 35℃) at individual and molecular levels. In the chronic toxicity test, the group exposed to high temperatures showed an earlier first reproduction time compared to the normal temperatures group, but it was delayed by co-exposure to NMPs at 35℃. Notably, the total reproduction decreased significantly only after 0.05-㎛ PS beads exposure at 30℃. Interaction analysis showed that first reproduction time, modulation of the antioxidant-related gene (GSTS1), heat shock gene (Hsp70), and ecdysteroid pathway-related genes (EcR_A, EcR_B, and CYP314A1) were closely related to temperature and PS beads size. These results indicate that microplastics have size-dependent toxicity, and their toxicity can be enhanced at high temperatures. In addition, higher temperatures and PS beads exposure may have negative effects on reproduction. This study suggests that various factors such as water temperature should be considered when evaluating the toxicity of microplastics in marine ecosystems, and provides an understanding of the complex toxic interaction between water temperature and microplastics for marine zooplankton.

The initial burst of drug release is an important role in the controlled delivery of drug having hish toxicity and narrow therapeutic ranges. Nanosphere composed of monolayer could not achieve precisely controlled drug release because of the initial burst of drug on surface. In this study, double layered nanosphere was prepared for sustained drug delivery without initial burst. Double layered nanosphere composed of dextran and PLGA was fabricated by using conventional W/O/W double emulsion method. To control surface tension on the outer layer of nanospheres, PVA was used as a surfactant. Release behavior of dextran as model drug was observed as the $3{\times}1$mm wafers formed by compression mould in the deionized water for 7 days. Double layered nanosphere has sustained release behavior, in contast to single layered nanospheres. such as mechanical mixture and dextran nanospheres. Especially, nanosphere containing PVA $0.2\%$ has shown nearly the zero-order release profile. As a result of this study, double layered nanospheres has more sustained release profile of drug without the initial burst and the release behavior of dexoan on tile double layered nanospheres was controlled by the contents of PVA as a surfactant.
In the aspect of saving energy and water, facilitating the separation membrane for the water treatment has been rising recently as one of the possible solutions. However, microbial biofouling effect is the biggest obstacle that hinders reaching higher permeability over a prolonged period of nanofiltration operation. To solve this problem and fully utilize the filtration membranes with enhanced performance, largely two kinds of solutions are studied and the first and the most commonly mentioned type is the one using the silver nanoparticles. Since silver nanoparticles are important to be well tailored on membrane surface, various methods have been applied and suggested. Using silver nanoparticles however also has the drawbacks or possible toxicity risks, raising the need for other types of utilizing non silver particles to functionalize the membrane, such as copper, graphene or zinc oxides, and amine moieties. Each attempt included in either kind has produced some notable results in killing, preventing, or repelling the bacteria while at the same time, left some unsolved points to be evaluated. In this review, the effects of metal nanoparticles and other materials on the antifouling properties of water treatment membranes are summarized.

Recently, the consumption of nanomaterials has been significantly increased in both industrial and commercial sectors, as a result of steady advancement in the nano-technologies. This ubiquitous use of nanomaterials has brought up the concern that their exposure to environments may cause detrimental effects on human health as well as natural ecosystems, and it is required to characterize their behavior in various environmental media and to evaluate their ecotoxicity. For the sake of accomplishing those assessments, the development of methods to effectively separate them from diverse media and to quantify their properties should be requisitely accompanied. Among a number of separation techniques developed so far, this study focuses on Field-Flow Fractionation (FFF) because of its strengths, such as relatively less disturbance of samples and simple pretreatment, and we review overseas and domestic literatures on the separation of nanomaterials using the FFF technique. In particular, researches with Flow Field-Flow Fractionation (FlFFF) are highlighted due to its most frequent application among FFF techniques. The basic principle of the FlFFF is briefly introduced and the studies conducted so far are classified and scrutinized based on the sort of target nanomaterials for the purpose of furnishing practical data and information for the researchers struggling in this field. The literature review suggests that the operational conditions, such as pretreatment, selection of membrane and carrier solution, and rate (velocity) of each flow, should be optimized in order to effectively separate them from various matrices using the FFF technique. Moreover, it seems to be a prerequisite to couple or hyphenate with several detectors and analyzers for quantification of their properties after their separation using the FFF. However, its application has been restricted regarding the types of target nanomaterials and environmental media. Furthermore, domestic literature data on both separation and characterization of nanomaterials are extremely limited. Taking into account the overwhelmingly increasing consumption of nanomaterials, the efforts for the area seem to be greatly urgent.
[ $TiO_2$ ] is widely used because it is non-toxic. Recently, however, nanometer size $TiO_2$ particles (P-25) have been produced and used to increase the photo catalysis efficiency. Nanometer-sized $TiO_2$ is efficient, but due to its small size ($20{\sim}30\;nm$), it can flow into ecosystems and into cells. Thus, it may affect human health. Additionally, $TiO_2$ can produce a second contaminant, OH-radical, which is a health risk for all living organisms during photo degradation reaction. Hence, when nanometer-sized $TiO_2$ flows into natural streams and attaches to living organisms, it will create health risks. We investigated the biological toxicity of this condition in zebrafish embryos. We observed abnormal morphology, hatching rate, and measured the catalase activity to determine anti-oxidation at 100 post fertilization hours. Zebrafish were somewhat affected by $TiO_2$ nanometer sized particles under UV-A (a condition similar to sunlight). Powdered $TiO_2$ is toxic to the zebrafish fly. Even without light, $TiO_2$ particles attached to embryos and flies, having an effect on both.
Natural chitosan has high molecular weight and the poor solubility in water. Water-soluble chitosan with low molecular weight was prepared by the hydrolysis method. In order to develop an efficient gene delivery carrier, chitosan was conjugated with lipoic acid to form the comb-type copolymer. The copolymer with the amphiphilic property formed the self-assembled nanoparticles in the aqueous solution. The average size of nanoparticles was 217.6 nm and the average size of nanoparticles/DNA complex was 170 nm. New chitosan-lipoic acid copolymer showed the low cytotoxicity and 10 times higher transfection efficiency than that of the pure chitosan.
