  • To study the plant community structure of Chayang-chon area from Jangsudae to Hangyeryung in Soraksan National Park, 62 plots(each size 100m$^2$) were set up and surveyed. Six communities(Pinus densiflora - Populus caximowiczii community, P. densiflora community, P. densiflora - Deciduous broad-leaved tree community, Quercus mongolica community, Q. mongolica - Carpinus cordata community, C. cordata - Deciduous broad- leaved tree community) were classified by DCA ordination techniques. Q. mongolica community, Q. mongolica - C. cordata and C. cordata - Deciduous broad-leaved tree community were distrivuted over altitude 755m, and the others were distributed below there. In the community over altitude 755m, the succession that Q. mongolica community changed to C. cordata community have proceeded partly and otherwise C. cordata community and Deciduous broad-leaved tree community have been competing with each other. In the community with distribytion range from 500m to 560, high, P. densiflora community would change deciduous broad-leaved tree community forward.

  • This study aimed to understand the nutrient absorption, usage and allocation of Carpinus cordata in different soil and light environments. Seasonal changes of foliar nitrogen, phosphorous, chlorophyll contents, leaf mass per area (LMA) and nutrient retranslocation rates were investigated for C. cordata saplings growing in a natural deciduous broadleaved forest and an Manchurian fir (Abies holophylla) plantation in Gwangneung, Kyunggido. The deciduous forest had lower leaf area, higher light penetration, and better soil fertility than the Manchurian fir forest. However, available soil phosphorous content in the deciduous forest was only one third of that in the Manchurian fir forest, which caused lower foliar phosphorous content and higher P retranslocation rate of C. cordata in the deciduous forest than that in the Mancurian fir forest. Soil nitrogen contents in the deciduous forest were higher than that in the Manchurian fir forest, however, no differences in foliar nitrogen content and retranslocation rate in C. cordata between the two stands were found. C. cordata in the Manchurian fir forest with high LAI throughout a year, had lower LMA, foliar nitrogen content and chlorophyll a/b, while had higher total chlorophyll content and chlorophyll/N than that in the deciduous forest. These results implied C. cordata under different environments are using different strategies for nutrient use and allocations.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze characters of the vegetation structure, vegetation-environment relationships of Kyeryongsan forest community. Fifty plots were sampled in the valley forest of Donghaksa, Gabsa, Sanghasinri and Shinwonsa regions in Kyeryongsan. Field survey was carried out in August of 1999 to examine a vegetation type and measure a diameter. The classification by TWINSPAN, the DCCA ordination, and structure of stand were used to analyze data. The results of this study are as follows : 1. With the classification by TWINSPAN, the community was categorized into four groups, such as Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus variabilis-Quercus serrata, Zelkova serrata-Celtis jessoensis and Carpinus cordata communities. 2. The dominant species in Carpinus laxiflora community were Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata, Pinus densiflora and Styrax japonica. The dominant species in Quercus variabilis-Quercus serrata community were Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata, Styrax japonica, Castanea crenata and Platycarya strobilacea. The dominant species in Zelkova serrata-Celtic jessoensis community were Quercus serrata, Castanea crenata, Lindera erythrocarpa, Zelkova serrata and Styrax japonica. The dominant species in Carpinus cordata community were Carpinus cordata, Carpinus laxiflora, Sapium japonicum, Cornus controversa and Zelkova serrata. 3. The results of the correlation between Kyeryongsan valley forest community and environmental factors by DCCA ordination method are as follows; The Carpinus laxiflora community was found in low elevation and steep slope area. The Quercus variabilis-Quercus serrata community was found in low elevation and lower slope area. The Zelkova serrata-Celtis jessoensis community was found in high elevation and lower slope area. The Carpinus cordata community was found in high elevation and midium slope area.

  • Litterfall and litter decomposition represent a major contribution to the carbon and nutrient inputs in a forest ecosystem. We measured litterfall quantity and nutrient dynamics in decomposing litter for two years at the Kwangneung broadleaf natural forest (DK site) in Korea. Litterfall was collected in circular littertraps (collecting area : 0.25 $m^2$) and mass loss rates and nutrient release patterns in decomposing litter were estimated using the litterbag technique employing 30 cm ${\times}$ 30 cm nylon bags with 1.5 mm mesh size. Total annual litterfall was 5,627 kg/ha/yr and leaf litter accounted for 61 % of the litterfall. The leaf litter quantity was highest in Quercus serrata, fallowed by Carpinus laxiflora and C. cordata, etc., which are dominant tree species in the site. Mass loss from decomposing leaf litter was more rapid in C. laxiflora and C. cordata than in Q. serrata litter. About 77% of C. laxiflora and 84% of C. cordata litter disappeared, while about 48% in Q. serrata litter lost over two years. Lower mass loss rates of Q. serrata litter may be attributed to the difference of substrate quality such as lower nutrient concentrations compared with the other litter types. Nutrient concentrations (N, P, Mg) of three litter types except for potassium (K) increased compared with initial nutrient concentrations of litter over the study period. Compared with Q. serrata litter, nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) in C. laxiflora and C. cordata litter were released rapidly. The results suggest that litter mass loss and nutrient dynamic processes among tree species vary considerably in the same site conditions.

  • This study was designed to analyze vegetation units using a phytosociological method and to identify the ecological characteristics of each vegetation unit, for forest vegetation from Misiryeong to Danmokryeong of Baekdudaegan, in which, in total, 150 plots were surveyed during May to October 2016. Using community classification according to phytosociology, the Quercus mongolica community group was classified at the top level of a vegetation hierarchy that was classified into an Abies koreana community and a Carpinus cordata community. The A. koreana community was divided into Thuja koraiensis and A. koreana typical groups. The T. koraiensis group was subdivided into Pinus pumila and Betula chinensis subgroups. The C. cordata community was divided into Sasa borealis and C. cordata typical groups. Thus, this forest vegetation comprised one community group, two communities, four groups, and two subgroups and indicated five vegetation units. After analyzing the correlations among the five vegetation units classified by this plant sociological method and the environmental factors like altitude, bare rock, number of present species, and coverage of tree layer with a coincidence method, the A. koreana community and C. cordata typical group were found to be distributed above 1,000 m in altitude, and the S. borealis group was distributed below 1,000 m in altitude. Except for vegetation unit 1, vegetation units tended to be mainly distributed where there was less than 20% bare rock. There was no typical tendency in the number of species present; vegetation unit 5 showed the most abundance among the vegetation units. Coverage by the tree layer mostly exceeded 60%, except for vegetation unit 1.

  • This study was carried out to provide basic data for conservation management of Pinus densiflora forest and to predict ecological succession tendency by analyzing plant community structure and change of Pinus densiflora community structure for twenty two years in Yongmun-sa (Temple) Valley, Yangpyeong-gun. According to the analysis of actual vegetation, Pinus densiflora community accounted for 51.3% of the total vegetation in the area. Nineteen plots were classified into four community types. The Shannon's species diversity index (H') showed from 0.5110 to 1.3101. There were distributed Pinus densiflora in age from 48 to 89, Quercus serrata in age from 31 to 63, Carpinus laxiflora in age from 26 to 61. According to the analysis of the change for twenty-two years, Pinus densiflora community was maintained or decreased and competitive species (Quercus serrata, Carpinus laxiflora, Carpinus cordata) were increased. The ecological succession tendency was predicted Pinus densiflora community develop into Quercus serrata, lastly into Carpinus laxiflora and Carpinus cordata.
