Antiaging Effects of Musa sapientum L. (Banana) Leaf Extract (바나나 잎 추출물의 주름개선 효과)

  • To examine the possibility of using Musa sapientum L. (Banana) leaf extract as a cosmetic raw material, banana leaves grown in Jeju Island were extracted with 70% ethanol. Polysaccharides present in banana leaf extract were discarded by precipitation with cold ethanol. Polysaccharide-discarded banana leaf extract promoted procollagen and COL1A1 gene expression, but inhibited matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-2 gene expression in human skin fibroblasts when examined by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The active compound in banana leaves was identified by fractionation with various solvents. The chloroform fraction showed the highest anti-wrinkle efficacy and the active compound of chloroform fraction was identified as corosolic acid by NMR, FT-IR, EA, and HPLC-MS. In addition, banana leaf extract showed anti-oxidative efficacy with an IC50 value of 67.91 ppm, as determined by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. Finally, the anti-wrinkle efficacy of banana leaf extract-containing cream was confirmed by clinical tests. Based on these results, banana leaves could have an application as a cosmetic raw material with anti-wrinkle efficacy.

An Analysis on the Collision of Urban tissue at Urban Redevelopment Area - Focused on the area inside of four main gates of Seoul - (도심 재개발 지역에서 도시조직 간 충돌에 관한 연구 - 서울 사대문 안을 중심으로 -)

  • Most of construction at urban area is now undertaking a redevelopment because currently the most of city is full. But the research about the collision of urban tissue at urban redevelopment area are very limited and there are many issues at urban redevelopment area. So the purpose of this study is to analyze the collision between different urban tissue at urban redevelopment area and suggest proper method for urban redevelopment. The area inside of four main gates, especially Chung Jin, Gong pyeong, Mu gyo- Da dong district are selected to analyze because the area inside of these gates is the oldest urban redevelopment area and each of them has a different redeveloped method. And current status of research area's urban tissue and collision situation are analyzed by macro and micro scale of view. The results of this study were as follows; Ignoring the timeline of the urban redevelopment process can be a major issue in collision between urban tissue. Therefore, the consideration of intermediate stage of redevelopment process is needed by making public area, a temporal use of vacant lot and changing architectural elements can make a harmony between different urban tissue.

Pedagogy and the Emergence of Contemporary Korean Architecture after the 1990s - The Education and Work of Kim Seung Hoy and Choi Wook - (1990년대 이후 건축역사와 건축설계교육의 관계에 대한 연구 - 김승회와 최욱의 교육배경과 작업을 사례로 -)

  • The goal of this paper is to analyze the relationship between pedagogy and the emergence of contemporary Korean architecture after the 1990s. For this purpose, the paper deals with the education and work of two important contemporary Korean architects, Kim Seung Hoy and Choi Wook. Kim and Choi were part of a group of young architects that went abroad in the 1980s to study at the centers of architectural education in Europe and the United States. Through their education and work, the paper discusses the relationship among education, history, and design practice in architecture. During their studies at Michigan University and IUAV in Venice, they were commonly influenced by Colin Rowe through their studios. In the case of Kim Seung Hoy, he was introduced to the Beaux Arts logic of the analytique and esquisse through the teaching of Steven Hurrt, a disciple of Colin Rowe. Choi Wook took studios that involved formal analysis and comparison of Palladio and Le Corbusier. The paper further analyzes their works in Korea by employing the concepts of fragments and systems, ignorance and knowledge. The paper concludes that, in Korean contemporary architecture, fragments and systems, ignorance and knowledge, lie in the middle of ongoing creative process that must distinguished from the West, where architectural history provides an established tradition of systematic knowledge.

The Study of Donor-Acceptor Chromophores and Diketopyrrolopyrrole(DPP) Analogues (Donor-Acceptor 발색단과 디케토피롤로피롤(DPP) 유도체에 관한 연구)

  • The diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) pigment is a bicyclic 8-π-electron system containing two lactam units. Typical DPP derivative pigments have melting points of over 350°C and very low solubility in most solvents, and show absorption in the visible region with a molar extinction coefficient of 33,000 dm2mol−1 and strong photoluminescence with maxima in the range 500–600 nm. X-ray structure analyses of DPP show that the whole molecule is almost in one plane. The phenyl rings are twisted out of the heterocyclic plane and the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between neighboring lactam NH and carbonyl units influences the structure of the DPP pigment in the solid state. In this study, mono-N-alkylation and mono-N-arylation were undertaken for Pigment Red 264 or Pigment Orange 73 with alkyl halide and aryl halide, respectively, in the presence of sodium tert-butoxide as a base catalyst to improve the solubility of DPP pigments and their application as CO2 indicators. The synthetic yield was in the range 11–88%. The indicator dyes are highly soluble in organic solvents and shows pH-dependent absorption (λmax 501 and 572 nm for the protonated and deprotonated forms, respectively) and emission (λmax 524 and 605 nm for the protonated and deprotonated forms, respectively) spectra. The mono-N-alkylated and mono-N-arylated DPP pigment was identified by 1H-NMR (1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer), FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), and MS (Mass Spectrometry). According to the results of color and hue properties obtained by a color matching analyzer, the synthesized DPP pigment material can be used as a CO2 indicator.

Effect of Amine-Based Antioxidants as Stabilizers for Biodiesel (바이오디젤용 산화방지제인 아민안정제들의 효과)

  • Biodiesel is an environmentally-friendly fuel with low smoke emission because it contains about 10% oxygen. Biodiesel fuel prepared by transesterification of vegetable oil or animal fats is susceptible to auto-oxidation. The rate of auto-oxidation depends on the number of methylene double bonds contained within the fatty acid methyl or ethyl ester groups. Biodiesel may be easily oxidized under several conditions, i.e., upon exposure to sunlight, temperature, oxygen environment. Maintenance of the fuel quality of biodiesel requires the development of technologies to increase the resistance of biodiesel to oxidation. Treatment with antioxidants is a promising approach for extending the shelf-life or storage time of biodiesel. The chemical properties of various amine-based antioxidants were evaluated after synthesis of the antioxidants by condensation of phenylenediamine with alkylamines at room temperature. In general, the oxidative stability can be assessed based on various experimental parameters. Such parameters may include temperature, pressure, and the flow rate of air through the samples. The Rancimat method (EN14112) was selected because it is a rapid technique that requires very little sample and provides good precision for oxidative degradation analysis. Specifically, the EN 14112 technique provides enhanced efficiency for oxidative stability evaluation when a larger ester head group is utilized. Therefore, this technique was employed for evaluation of the oxidation stability of biodiesel by the Rancimat method (EN14112).

The Study on Magnetic Properties of Transition Metal Doped Semiconductor (전이금속이 치환된 반도체 물질의 자기적 특성 연구)

  • This is the study of magnetic properties of transition metal doped diluted magnetic semiconductors(DMSs). The wurtzite structure samples were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The thermodynamic characteristics and magnetic properties of $Zn_{1-x}Co_xO$ single phase was investigated for different doping concentration (x = 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 10%, 15%). The property of diluted magnetic semiconductors has been comfirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) and Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The magnetic properties of pure $Zn_{1-x}Co_xO$ is found to be dominated by the ferromagnetic interaction between doped transition metal ions, where by the ferromagnetic coupling strength is simply increased with the concentration(>5%) of the doped transition metal.
