  • This paper seeks to illuminate the intellectual context of Giljae, who had carried out a unique life during the late Koryŏ and early Chosun period and left quite a significant imprint on the Chosun intellectual history. In the midst of the tumultuous political changes in the late Koryŏ, Giljae worried the fate of the declining Koryŏ dynasty after contemplating on the directions that Yi Sŏnggye had taken after the Wihwado Retreat and made it very clear that he would rather honor the integrity of Baekyi·Sukje(伯夷叔齊). The traces that Giljae had left in this period obtained its significance not just as a loyal integrity of a subject but as a paragon of life that lived up to the principles of the Confucius truth. To decline a prestigious position in the service of a king when it was offered is not just to buy the honor of integrity. It is an endeavor to live one's life right as to how one entered the world and retreated from it in accordance with the Confucius teachings. That many kings and scholars in the Chosun period placed Giljae highly in the intellectual history of Korean Confucianism in remembering his integrity is none other than the recognition of this fact.

  • One of the famous Korean verses, Sijo 'In hemp clothes in winter(삼동에 베옷 입고)' is in thirty kinds of anthologies and ten kinds of Chinese writings. The major point in literary transmission of this work was the writer. The writer of this verse is Cho Sik(조식) in most anthologies. The writer of this work is recorded as Kil Jae(길재), Kim In-hoo(김인후), Kim Eung-jung(김응정), Lee Mong-gyu(이몽규) or Kim Ryung(김령) in Chinese writings. These people were famous for their studies and virtue, but they did not take office and retired from the world until they die. They were faithful to their principles serving their kings, though the country had wanted them to take a position in the government. Even though they did not in government service, they left some anecdotes and stories of lamentation after hearing their king's death. Because these stories and anecdotes can be easily connected with 'In hemp clothes in winter' which is about mourning over death of a king, they were known as the writer of this poem. Especially, their offsprings, juniors and followers often wrote these people as the writer of this work to represent their honor. Throughout the studies of several literary documents, this poem is written by Kim Eung-Jung, who lived in Kangjin(강진) in Jeonla province(전라도) and did not take office in all his life. He made this poem when he had heard the King Myoungjong(명종)'s death. Various transmission of literary documents with the records about 'In hemp clothes in winter' have a significance that can show the aspects of noble men's acceptance and transmission of Sijo.

  • In this paper, I tried to analyze the image of bamboo from Chang Hyun-kwang's poetry. Especially I focused on defining the symbolic meaning of bamboo as a poetic material. To achieve this, I inspected his view of world and politic life. He considered his contemporary period as 'ethically corrupted' world. During his life time, he served for three kings and also suffered from the fires of war four times. That means, he had to undergo the political unrest and national crisis during his life time. Due to the chaotic state of affairs, all the people were busy pursuing their own interests. It made Chang had no choice but retiring from active life. While Chang revealed his attitude to life through writing poetry, he used the image of bamboo as a completion of one's mature character. And the image of bamboo what he used was somewhat different from general one. Chang used the image of bamboo in two ways. The one is seeking live in retirement, and the other is chasing completion of his own mature character in academic way.

  • The purpose of this research is to direct the 7th national primary science curriculum to be performed properly. The research is based on the questionnaire to investigate the primary teachers' appreciation of the curriculum. The questions are about the general aspect of the 7th curriculum and special treatises on science curriculum. Questionnaires were distributed to 1000 teachers, and 822 teachers answered them. According to the survey results the teachers' thoughts were as following: First, there must be enough time to develop a new curriculum. It is not desirable to change the old curriculum totally. There should be some continuity between the old and the new curriculum. Second, teachers appreciated that the learning resources and supplements were helpful, and interested students. Teachers thought that If equipment at class or school was not enough. Third, according to them the hierarchical structure of science curriculum was appropriate, but the contents need to be improved. Fourth, most teachers restructured the 7th science curriculum to adapt it to the class and school. They cooperated with one another in teaching science, and applied diverse teaching-learning methods according to the curricular contents and the grade levels. Teachers tried to evaluate all aspects of the students with various methods, but they felt it was hard. They were not active in developing evaluation tools as a team, and in objectifying the information about students. Fifth, teachers felt it was hard to implement the science curriculum according to different levels of the students. Based on the survey of teachers' thoughts, the following can be suggested for successful implementation and reorientation of the curriculum. First, teachers need learning opportunities to appreciate and adapt the 7th curriculum creatively. Second, they need guidances in implementing the different levels of the curriculum, and the information about the appropriate resources for it. Third, we need to control the relative difficulty of the curricular contents, and reduce the hours and quantity of the study. Fourth, we need to improve the school equipment and facilities. Networking and cooperation among education-related institutions are essential for better education. Fifth, it is desirable to develop concrete and diverse teaming models.
