A vibration-based monitoring system is newly proposed to predict the loss of prestress forces in prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridges. Firstly, a global damage alarming algorithm is newly proposed to monitor the occurrence of prestress-loss by using the change in frequency responses. Secondly, a prestress-loss prediction algorithm is selected to estimate the extent of prestress-loss by using the change in natural frequencies. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed system is experimentally evaluated on a scaled PSC girder model for which acceleration responses were measured for several damage scenarios of prestress-loss.

In this paper, a hybrid damage monitoring scheme for prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridges by using sequential acceleration and impedance signatures is newly proposed. Damage types of interest include prestress-loss in tendon and flexural stiffness-loss in a concrete girder. The hybrid scheme mainly consists of three sequential phases: damage alarming, damage classification, and damage estimation. In the first phase, the global occurrence of damage is alarmed by monitoring changes in acceleration features. In the second phase, the type of damage is classified into either prestress-loss or flexural stiffness-loss by recognizing patterns of impedance features. In the third phase, the location and the extent of damage are estimated by using two different ways: a mode shape-based damage detection to detect flexural stiffness-loss and a natural frequency-based prestress prediction to identify prestress-loss. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a laboratory-scaled PSC girder model for which hybrid vibration-impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios of prestress-loss and flexural stiffness-loss.

This study proposes a novel method for in service evaluation of tension force of a prestressed 7-wire strand which is frequently employed for retrofitting bridge superstructure. The smart strand is made by replacing the straight king wire of the strand with an instrumented steel tube in which the FBG sensor is embedded. Since the strain of the smart strand can easily be measured using the sensor, it is possible to monitor tension force of the strand during the service. For the sake of demonstrating effectiveness of the proposed strand, we came up with a 7.0m long prototype with 2 FBG sensors, and it is applied as an external tendon to a 6.4m long and 0.6 high RC T-shaped beam. A loading-unloading test has been carried out, and estimated tension forces using the smart strand are compared with measured forces by load cell. The comparison showed that the proposed smart tendon is useful and accurate for monitering tension force of the prestressed tendon.

This paper introduces a magnetic hysteresis monitoring result to apply an EM sensing technique for estimating tensile force of PSC girder to various class of PS tendon. The tensile force of PS tendon is a very important factor in the performance evaluation of PSC bridges. However, in this time, the tensile force was just measured only during construction and it does not monitored after construction. To measure the tensile force of PS tendons, the EM sensing based NDT method was developed but the proposed method cannot be applied to various class of PS tendons. Thus this study performed the magnetic hysteresis measurement according to the tensile force for class B, C and D PS tendons through experimental study. The specific tensile forces(50, 100, 150, 180kN) were induced to the each specimens and the magnetic hysteresis curve was measured at each point. The permeability of specimens were gradually decreased according to increase of tensile force. Especially, the slopes of permeability variation of class B and C were similar while that of class D was different.

This paper presents results of one-year monitoring on prestressing force of a 7-wire steel post-tensioning strand which is installed in a UHPC(ultra high performance concrete) bridge with 11.0 m long, 5.0 m wide, and 0.6 m high by using a FBG-encapsulated 7-wire steel strand. The initial prestressing forces and the prestress changes during a vehicle load test were measured using the FBG-encapsulated strand. The results show that the FBG-encapsulated 7-wire strand is very effective for monitoring the prestress forces even the change in the tension force is very small. Additionally, it was indicated that selection of the thermal expansion coefficient which is used for the temperature correction shall be carefully carried out.

The ground shear force at the expected failure surface and resistance force due to reinforced anchor can act as important factors according to a failure type from the stability viewpoint at a slope. Furthermore, the anchor's axial force may vary at an anchor-reinforced slope due to ground weathering, settlement, and corrosion in the incompletely anti-corrosion treated steel wire strand at a ground where the bearing plate is installed. However, in case that the resistance force of the anchor is locally lost due to the variation of the anchor's axial force, the resistance force may not play the role so that the external force tends to be transferred to the surrounding anchors, causing an increase in the tensile force in the surrounding anchors. Accordingly, a stability problem at the entire slope may occur, which requires much attention. Thus, this study proposed a method to monitor a variation trend of the tensile force of anchors installed at a slope and infer the external stability at the entire slope considering the monitoring result.

IPC girder is more prestressed and has smaller sectional area than the conventional PSC-I type girder due to incremental prestressing along the construction process. The continuous IPC girder bridge may have problems in serviceability and stresses at internal supports because it is very flexible. In this paper, The long-term behavior of the continuous IPC girder bridge is studied through long-term structural analysis and monitoring the deflections. The long-term behavior is monitored right before the introduction of 2nd prestressing that is the construction process different from the conventional PSC-I type girder bridge. The total station of high-precision was used in measuring the deflections. According to the monitoring result so far, the continuous IPC girder bridges does not show remarkable long-term behavior like severe camber or deflection and the measured deflections are very similar to the results of long-term structural analysis.

In this study, the effect of temperature-induced uncertainty to damage monitoring using acceleration-impedance response features is analyzed for presterssed concrete(PSC) girder bridges. Firstly, a damage monitoring algorithm using global and local vibration features is designed. As global and local features, acceleration and electro-mechanical impedance features are selected respectively. Secondly, the temperature effect on the acceleration and impedance features for a lab-scaled PSC girder is experimentally analyzed. From the experimental results, compensation models for temperature-acceleration features and temperature-impedance features are estimated. Finally, the feasibility of the acceleration-impedance-based damage monitoring technique using the compensation model is evaluated in the PSC girder for which a set of prestress-loss and flexural stiffness loss cases were dynamically tested.
