  • We consider the design of opportunistic spectrum access schemes where secondary users can opportunistically access unused spectrum in non-slotted primary systems. Two non-slotted spectrum sensing and access schemes for secondary users are considered. We present experimental results that demonstrate the performance of the considered schemes.

  • Wireless multimedia service through the access to mobile telephone network or data network is a vital part of contemporary life, and the demand for frequency spectrum for new services is expected to explode as the ubiquitous computing proliferate. Cognitive radio is a technology, which automatically recognizes and searches for temporally and spatially unused frequency spectrum, then actively determines the communication method, bandwidth, etc. according to the environment, thus utilizing the limited spectrum resources efficiently. In this paper, we investigate the effects of imperfect sensing, misdetection and false alarm, on the primary and secondary users' spectrum usage through the analysis of continuous time Markov Chain. We analyzed the effects of the parameters such as sensing error, offered load on the system performance.

  • In distributed cognitive radio networks, cognitive radio devices which perform the channel sensing individually, are seriously affected by radio channel environments such as noise, shadowing and fading such that they can not property satisfy the maximum allowable interference level to the primary user. In the paper, we propose a Q-learning based channel access scheme for cognitive radios so as to satisfy the maximum allowable interference level to the primary user as well as to improve the throughput of cognitive radio by opportunistically accessing on the idle channels. In the proposed scheme, the pattern of channel usage of the primary user will be learned through Q-learning during the pre-play learning step, and then the learned channel usage pattern will be utilized for improving the sensing performance during the Q-learning normal operation step. Through the simulation, it is shown that the proposed scheme can provide bettor performance than the conventional energy detector in terms of the interference level to primary user and the throughput of cognitive radio under both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels.
