The main goal of this paper is to understand the underlying cognitive mechanisms of collaborative learning and how it can be supported by technology. The paper first overviews changes in conceptions of learning and distinguishes different types of joint works including collaborative learning. Cognitive mechanisms of collaborative learning are examined in terms of resource pooling, facilitation of constructive activities, knowledge co-construction, and supports for monitoring and regulation. Socio-emotional mechanisms of collaborative learning moderate the directions and strengths of these cognitive mechanisms. Technology supports these mechanisms in a number of different ways. Seven major supports technology provides for collaborative learning are discussed. A deeper understanding of the cognitive mechanisms of collaborative learning can help us to harness the benefits of collaborative learning better and also to develop more sophisticated tools supporting collaborative learning.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the age, motor function, and characteristics of feeding and articulation in children with spastic cerebral palsy. Methods : This study included 34 boys and 27 girls who lived in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Daegu, Daejeon, or Busan, and were diagnosed with cerebral palsy by rehabilitation doctors. A total of 61 children with cerebral palsy were identified as dependent variables for verbal intelligibility, diadochokinesis speed and intelligibility. Multiple regression analysis was performed. Results : Verbal intelligibility among the articulating abilities of children with spastic cerebral palsy was significantly associated with the non-speech mechanisms of cup drinking, and spoon feeding. Diadochokinesis speed was significantly associated with the speech mechanism of porridge feeding, the non-speech mechanism of cup drinking, and motor function. Diadochokinesis intelligibility also showed significant results with regards to the speech mechanism of porridge feeding and the non-speech mechanism of cup drinking. Conclusion : It is useful to evaluate and treat eating function by considering speech and non-speech mechanisms and motor function, according to eating function, among the variables related to articulation ability in children with spastic cerebral palsy. In addition, it would be very useful to study the improvement of articulation abilities after developing and applying a feeding program for children with cerebral palsy.
Objectives: Previous studies have reported an association between circadian preference and personality. Defense mechanism is unconscious ego process which deals with an individual's anxiety and is closely associated with one's personality. Our aim is to investigate the association between defense mechanism and circadian preference in medical students. Methods: One hundred forty eight medical students (70 males, 78 females), aged 22 to 30, answered the Beck Depression Inventory-II, Morningness-eveningness Questionnaire, and Korean version of Defense Style Questinnaire. Results: Consumption (beta=-0.262, p=0.001) and being a male (beta=0.175, p=0.031) were significant positive predictors of eveningness, while sublimation (beta=0.185, p=0.023) was a significant negative predictor of eveningness. Conclusion: Our study showed a relationship between specific defense mechanisms (i.e., consumption and sublimation) and eveningness in medical students, but it did not address whether the relationship is a causal one.

Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the correlation between defense mechanism and posttraumatic stress disorder in burn patients. Methods : We recruit 40 burn patients and we evaluate sociodemographic characteristics, characteristics related to burn, korean version of Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), Korean Version of Center for epidemiologic studies depression scale (CES-D) and Ewha Defense Mechanisms Test (EDMT). Multiple regression analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation between EDMT score and IES-R score. Results : Factor 2 of EDMT which consists of Ego-expansion subjects was significantly correlate with IER-S score. In factor 2, Controlling (β=-0.299, p<0.05), Sublimation (β=-0.276, p<0.05) is significantly correlate with IER-S score. Conclusions : Some subjects of defense mechanism was significantly correlate with IES-R score. it might be helpful to understand defense mechanism for the posttraumatic stress disorder in burn patients.
Retrieving temporal information of encoded events is one of the core control processes in episodic memory. Despite much prior neuroimaging research on episodic retrieval, little is known about how large-scale connectivity patterns are involved in the retrieval of sequentially organized episodes. Task-related functional connectivity multivariate pattern analysis was used to distinguish the different sequential retrieval. In this study, participants performed temporal episodic memory tasks in which they were required to retrieve the encoded items in either the forward or backward direction. While separately parsed local networks did not yield substantial efficiency in classification performance, the large-scale patterns of interactivity across the cortical and sub-cortical brain regions implicated in both the cognitive control of memory and goal-directed cognitive processes encompassing lateral and medial prefrontal regions, inferior parietal lobules, middle temporal gyrus, and caudate yielded high discriminative power in classification of temporal retrieval processes. These findings demonstrate that mnemonic control processes across cortical and subcortical regions are recruited to re-experience temporally-linked series of memoranda in episodic memory and are mirrored in the qualitatively distinct global network patterns of functional connectivity.
The purpose of this study was to explore discursive-epistemic mechanisms in high school earth science lessons. A total of 11 video recordings of earth science lessons were collected from three inservice high school teachers. The video recordings were all transcribed and analyzed by employing the discourse analysis framework used in relevant previous studies. In analysis, we identified discursive-epistemic mechanisms as functional assemblies for fulfilling particular epistemic functions in the earth science lessons. The characteristics of these mechanisms were described according to their epistemic functions. The findings of the study were compared with those of previous studies to highlight the characteristics of discursive-epistemic mechanisms in the earth science classrooms. Analyses of middle school science lessons and of science lessons in alternative forms, as well as studies using extended research methods such as indepth interviews with teachers, were suggested as implications for future research.
The purpose of this study is to investigate three issues. First, we investigated four control mechanisms that might increase the franchisee's perception of franchiser commitment: a franchiser's TSIs, relational norms, monitoring, and qualification programs. Second, we proposed that appropriateness and efficacy of these control mechanisms in fostering franchiser commitment might be changed over the relationship life cycle. Third, we examined how bureaucracy and levels of franchiser's commitment related to relationship satisfaction. Through empirical analysis, research results indicate that a franchiser's TSIs and relational norms are positively associated with the franchisee's perception of franchiser commitment. In detail, what increase franchisee's perception of franchiser commitment in short-term relationship are franchiser's TSIs but relational norms are more important in the long-term relationship. In addition, the results show that franchisee's perception of franchiser commitment, participation and formalization are positively related to relationship satisfaction.
