The Emergence of de facto Standard and Firm Exit: Evidence from US Laser Printer Industry (사실상의 표준 등장 이후 기업퇴출에 관한 연구: 미국 레이저 프린터 산업을 중심으로)

  • In the technological cycle model, a technological discontinuity leads to the inception of industry evolution. Before the emergence of de facto standard, it is defined as era of ferment, while era of incremental change is defined after the emergence. In the era of ferment, market and product have high uncertainties, but the competition becomes fiercer in the era of incremental change. Hence, new or revised managerial strategies are required before and after the de facto standard. However, our understanding is limited. In this study, we explore determinants of firm survival after the emergence of de facto standard. We test these using 6650 product/year observations from 1983 to 2002. The results reveal that entry before the emergence of de facto standard, and the number of product in the market will increase exit rate. However, the number of company will reduce exit rate. Our findings illustrate distinctive characteristics of the industry after the emergence of de facto standard. We'll discuss academic and political implications in the last section of this paper.

A Study on the Method of Deriving Prospective Patent for Industrial-Academic Cooperation: A Case of Expired Patents (특허기반의 산학협력 유망분야 도출 방법 연구: 미활용 특허 사례)

  • Ever since the Act on the Promotion of Industrial Education and Industry-Academic Cooperation (IAC) was enacted in 2003, domestic universities have been focusing on commercialization research that can be applied to basic research industries by collaborating with industry and government agencies. Despite these efforts, the ratio of technology transfer and commercialization through IAC is low. Most technology transfer and technology commercialization studies have derived core technologies by analyzing the applied patents. First, this study collected expired patents from major domestic universities, compared quality characteristics of the expired and live patents, and finally found key patents among expired patents in order to identify companies and fields of application to which the patents can be utilized. The results of the study focus on expired university patents in terms of methodology and present a framework to identify patents capable of continuous IAC and technology transfer and match them with those in need. The results of this study are expected to contribute to increasing the efficiency of technology commercialization.

Prior Industry Experience, Product Attributes and Online Customer Review on New Product Sales: TV Products on Chinese Online Shopping (이전사업경험, 제품속성 및 온라인 고객평가가 제품 매출성과에 미치는 영향: 중국 온라인 쇼핑몰내 TV제품 중심으로)

  • This paper examines the effects of prior industry experience, new product attributes and online customer review on new product sales. Different from prior researches on the volume and valence of customer review on online shopping, this paper investigated multiple factors on new product sales in online shopping mall. Based on 407 TV new products in China online shopping mall, we investigated the relationships of kew factors with new products sales. New products of Incumbent TV manufacturers outsell those of new entrants in TV market. Low initial price and low level of discount rate have positive relationships with new product sales. Technological superiority has positive effect on new product sales but the adoptions of new technological functions show different effects on sales. The volume of online consumer review also has positive relationship with new product sales. This paper suggest some theoretical and practical implications and future research directions.
