The kidnapping was happened in the Niger Delta where armed separatists are demanding a larger share in oil revenues and compensation for environmental destruction due to oil exploration. Seven months later, nine Korean pipeline workers of Daewoo together with a Nigerian were kidnapped again and safely released thanks to the efforts of the company and the Korean government. These two kidnapping incidents have shown that companies engaged in the overseas business are not safe any more from the terrorist attacks and has given an invaluable lesson that the company having an intention to go abroad for business should take all possible anti and counter-measures against terrorism. The main purpose of this study is to suggest a guideline for the establishment of counter-terrorism and security strategy against terrorist attacks on the private companies at the overseas. In order to foster a better understanding of the problem, a brief history of terrorism is presented in the first part. In addition, this study analyses and describes the variations of terrorist attacks against private companies together with the terrorism related environment of Korea. Based on the outcome of the study, this paper takes a global view and perspectives of terrorist attacks against private companies and suggests consideration for the future.

  • This research is purposed to analyze the effect of firms' current socially responsible management on the future corporate financial performance with specified areas of socially responsible management according to the beneficiaries. Tobin's Q statistic and return on assets are calculated and exploited as measures of corporate financial performance. as of empirical analysis results, we found that the social contributions in the consumer area and external social contribution at time t influence the Tobin's Q statistic at time (t+1) in the aggregate analysis. as it is revealed that there is no effect in the firms with the outstanding social performance to the future corporate financial performance, we understand that the capital market is very sensitive to the external social contribution including consumers of firms with the weak social performance rather than the social contribution of socially outstanding firms. This sensitivity of capital market can effectively enhance the social contribution of firms, in particular listed firms with the weak social performance.

  • The goal of this paper was to understand the skill-up experiences of ex-participants of the customized training program in Technical High Schools for Small and Medium Business during first 2 years in Company through qualitative interviews with 3 purposefully selected ex-participants. Their core skill-up experience in this period was assumed as the shift from' dependent worker' to 'independent worker' on the base of literature review. The results of this study were following : 1. The small and medium companies offered a few formal training for newcomers, production-site orientation through short job rotation, linking them with skilled workers and job manuals or job standards. 2. Authentic skill-up experiences were combined with a structured reprimand, peer learning, deep learning through reflection on one's own experiences. 3. There were a few handicap conditions that disturbed their skill-up activities: the skilled worker don't open their skill toward new corner; the ex-participants in company had no time to learn anything meaningful to up-grade their competency.

  • We posit that employee ownership through defined contribution (DC) plans results in managerial entrenchment, and then examine the effect of the enactment of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 on the relation between the employee ownership and firm performance. By conducting Ordinary Least Square regression with the data from Form 5500 over the period of 1999-2014, we find that firms with large employee ownership increase their firm value measured by Tobin's Q after the adoption of the Act. These findings suggest that the adoption of the Act has been effective to mitigate the negative effect of managerial entrenchment by decreasing the employee ownership and reinforcing the fiduciary duty of plan trustees. Given the fact that we test the effects of the diversification rule on employee ownership using firm performance, further research could aim to examine the effects of the rule on employee ownership using stock return or market reaction.
