  • The precast concrete beam-column connectors for the high-rise office buildings were investigated experimentally in this study. The specimens of general precast beam-column connector which is used in a domestic site, specimen of DDC(dywidag ductile connectors) of Germany, and specimen of DDC with post-tensioning and modified DDC with post-tensioning were constructed and tested to verify the safety. The DDC with and without post-tensioning showed reliable joint strength and ductility but failed in critical inclined shear crackings at the column. The modified one showed better behaviors in tests because they did not show critical column crackings at failure. The use of prestressing did not helpful significantly to increase the strength and ductility of connectors but helpful only to develop self-centering behavior for stability.

  • One of the most complex reinforcement location in the precast building frame is the beam-column joint in a prefabricated construction. It is generally resulted from the vortical bars of column, anchorage bars of beam, and bars of hoop. Particularly the hooked anchorage bars of beam are confronted with hoop and main column bars. The headed reinforcement is considered to place them easily and to reduce the anchorage length in a precast construction. Reversed cyclic loading tests are performed on four beam-column specimens to evaluate the strength and behavior of beam to column and column to column connections. The result of test shows that the headed reinforcement has a similar performance than that of hooked reinforcement in a precast specimen with strong column and weak beam joints. The splice column joints which are used frequently in the domestic fields also show reliable behaviors in those tests with strong column and weak beam joints.

  • This is a preliminary study on the development of precast beam-column joints for dry construction methodology. Precast beam column joints with thru-connectors (BCJ_TC) using high strength bars or PS strands were developed and their seismic performance including strength degradation, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity was experimentally evaluated. Test results showed that compressive failures at the end blocks of PC beam members occurred dominantly while PC columns including panel zones were free from any damage. However, the connections confined with CFRP at the end block showed much improved seismic performance than that of the unconfined connections. Connections with neoprene pad fillers between beam and column interfaces were better than the other connections in all the seismic performances except initial stiffness. To improve the seismic performances of BCJ_TC, compressive strength of the concrete at the end block need to be increased to compensate for the additional compressive stresses due to unbonded connectors and deformation of connectors should be controlled respectively.

  • The precast concrete beam-column connectors to retrofit an apartment building were investigated experimentally. Five precast concrete beam-column connectors were considered to develop a modified model which was adapted to domestic construction conditions from the DDC(dywidag ductile connection) of Germany. Special H-shape steel hardware was used to decrease the width of column and beams for the construction of external frames in apartments. It was found that the DDC had high joint strength and ductility, however failed in inclined shear crackings in the columns. The modified one showed better behaviors in tests because they did not show critical column crackings at failure. The test result of modified one with grouting was compared to that of the one without grouting within the duct. The one with grouting showed higher strength and ductility in failure than that without grouting.

  • The composite frame system with reinforced concrete column and steel beam has some advantages in the structural efficiency by complementing the shortcomings between the two systems. The system, however has also a lot of problems in practical design and construction process due to the material dissimilarities. Considering these circumstances, this research is aimed at the development of the composite structural system which enables the steel beams to be connected to the R/C columns with higher structural safety and economy. Basically the proposed connection system is composed of four split tees, structural angles reinforced by stiffener, high strength steel rods, connecting plates and shear plates. The structural tests have been carried out to verify the moment transfer mechanism from beam flange to steel rods or connecting plates through the angle reinforced by siffener. The four prototype specimens have been tested until the flange of beam reached the plastic states. From the tests, no distinct material dissimilarities between concrete and steel have been detected and the stress transfer through wide flange beam - structural angle - high strength steel rod or connecting plate is very favorable.

  • In order to suggest a reasonable design for the circular concrete filled tube steel column-foundation connection applying high-tension bolts, Overall structural behavior and characteristics according to various variables of column-foundation connection are numerically analyzed using a commercial FE analysis program, ABAQUS. To that goal, finite element analysis is conducted on the basis of the previous study replacing anchor bolts to high-tension bolts, and the analytical results are validated by comparison with experimental results. Also, the various variables(embedded depth and grade of anchor, and height and thickness of rib) involved in behavior of the column-foundation connection are selected through analyzing the current design criteria, and the characteristics of the column-foundation connection are compared and analyzed according to the various variables. In case of the anchor bolts, Applying the high-tension bolts is more advantage and securing the embedded depth beyond 0.5D is recommendable. In case of the rib, a minimum of 0.5D for rib's height and $0.4t_b$ for rib's thickness should be secured to develop the structural performance.

  • The buckling strength of a pin-ended column may be increased significantly by reinforcing it with an assemblage of cross-arm members rigidly connected to the modpoint of the column and stayed members connecting the ends of the columns and cross-arm members. The purpose of the stays and cross-arm members is to introduce restraint against translation and rotation and thereby decrease the effective buckling length of the column. In this study, buckling strengths of the reinforced columns were quantitatively evaluated from analytical solutions and elastic/inelastic finite elements analysis and the results were compared each other. It was found that the reinforcing system may increase the buckling strength up to 8 times compared to ones without reinforcing system.

  • The CFT (Concrete Filled steel Tubes) column-footing connection is cast-in-place embedded type which provides simple construction procedure, low cost, and superior structural performance. In this study, CFT column-footing connection of modular pier is proposed and structural performance is evaluated by experimental tests. To evaluate structural performance of the CFT column-footing connection, a series of experimental tests were performed for the 4 specimens with different embedded depth. As a result of the quasi-static test, the specimen with 0.6D (0.6 times the outside diameter of steel tube) embedded depth showed relatively low ductility than other specimens with larger embedded depth due to cone failure of base concrete occurred during the lower loading step. On the contrary, cone failure of the base concrete was not observed in the specimens with larger embedded depth than 0.9D, but typical flexural failure in lower part of CFT column was observed. With the analyses of force-displacement curve, displacement ductility, and energy dissipation capacity, it is concluded that the rational range of embedded depth of the CFT column-footing connection is from 0.9D to 1.2D in view of good seismic performance.

  • Both ends of the hoop reinforcement in the reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to lateral loading must necessarily be bent by 135° so as to ensure a sufficient level of ductility. However, as this reinforcement is extremely difficult to construct, this requirement is often not satisfied at construction sites. This study entailed an experimental investigation on RC columns subjected to cyclic lateral loading equipped with steel clip-type implements that were developed to replace the complicated 135° hoop reinforcement details. Four RC column specimens were manufactured, and the main test parameters included the use of high-strength concrete and steel clip-type implements. Furthermore, three-dimensional finite element models were employed to evaluate the structural performances of the test specimens via nonlinear analyses. The results of the test and finite element analyses indicate that the RC columns with the steel clip-type implements exhibit structural performances equal to or better than those with the 135° hoop reinforcement details. Further, the finite element analysis results agree well with the test results.
