  • This paper presents experimental and analytical studies on the lateral cyclic behavior of RC columns actively confined with iron-based shape memory alloy (Fe-SMA) strips. Based on the Anexperimental study, we investigated the effectiveness of active confinement through compression testings of concrete cylinders confined by Fe SMA strips and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The test results showed that the specimens confined with Fe SMA strips significantly increased the deformation capacity of the concrete, even under lower confining pressures, compared to those specimensconfined with CFRP sheets. The experimental results were used to develop finite-element models of RC columns confined with Fe SMA or CFRP in their plastic-hinge region. After validating the proposed analytical model through comparison with the results from a previous RC column test, a series of lateral cyclic load analyses were carried out for the RC columns confined with Fe SMA and CFRP. The analytical results revealed that the lateral cyclic behavior of the Fe SMA-confined column was greatly enhanced in terms of deformation and energy dissipation capacities compared with tothat of the as-built and CFRP-confined columns.

  • In the current research, an algorithm of performance-based seismic retrofit design of reinforced concrete columns using FRP jacket has been proposed. For exact prediction of the nonlinear flexural analysis or FRP composite RC members, multiaxial constitutive laws of concrete and composite materials have been presented. For seismic retrofit design, an algorithm of direct displacement-based design method (DDM) proposed by Chopra and Goel (2001) has been newly applied to determine the design thickness of FRP jacket in seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete columns. To compare with the displacement coefficient method (DCM), the DDM gives an accurate prediction of the target displacement in highly nonlinear region, since the DCM uses the elastic stiffness before reaching the yield load as the effective stiffness but the DDM uses the secant stiffness.

  • In this study, in order to confirm the seismic performance of reinforced concrete frames retrofitted with Wall Friction Damper(WFD), the test was conducted by setting two-story Reinforced concrete frames (reference specimen, OMF-N and specimen retrofitted with internal H-shaped steel frame and WFD, OMF-ALL(H)) as main variables. The WFD Seismic Retrofit Method is a mixture of strength improvement and energy dissipation methods. To prevent the pre-destruction of existing structure by friction force before sufficient energy dissipation of WFD, the internal H-shaped steel frame and chemical anchor that penetrates the side of the beam were used to install WFD. According to the test results, the OMF-N specimen showed an brittle failure pattern caused by the shear force of the R/C column after the maximum strength was expressed. The OMF-ALL(H) specimen showed that the reduction of pinching effect and the failure of the RC column occurred. Also, the maximum strength, cumulative energy dissipation and ductility of OMF-ALL(H) increased 3.01 times, 7.2 times and 1.72 times for OMF-N. As a results, test results revealed that the WFD Seismic Retrofit Method installed on Reinforced concrete structure improves the seismic performance and the strengthening effect is valid.

  • Moment frames have been widely used in building construction. In current design codes, concrete moment frames are classified into ordinary, intermediate, and special moment resisting concrete frames (OMRCF, IMRCF, SMRCF)). The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of columns in ordinary moment resisting concrete frames (OMRCF) and intermediate moment resisting concrete frames (IMRCF). For this purpose 3 story OMRCF and IMRCF buildings were designed and detailed in compliance to ACI 318 (2002) and KCI (1999). In this study the buildings were assumed to be located in seismic zone 1 classified by UBC (1997). This study considered the columns in the 1st story since these columns shall resist the largest axial and lateral forces during an earthquake. Eight 2/3 scale column specimens were made for representing the upper part and lower part of exterior and interior columns of the OMRCF and the IMRCF Quasi-static reversed cyclic loading was applied to each specimen with a constant or varying axial load. Test results show that seismic behaviors of columns are influenced by existence of lap splices, axial force levels, and lateral reinforcement at possible plastic hinging region. However, the effect of such variables strongly co-related to each other.

  • In this study, the seismic details of a concrete-encased, U-shaped steel beam-to-RC column connection were developed. Three specimens of the beam-to-column connection were tested under cyclic loading to evaluate the seismic performance of the connection. The test parameters were the beam depth and the column section shape. The depths of the composite beams were 610 and 710 mm, including the slab depth. For the RC columns, a square section and a circular section were used. Special details using diagonal re-bars and exterior diaphragm plates were used to strengthen the connections with the rectangular and circular columns, respectively. The test results showed that the specimens exhibited good strength, deformation, and energy dissipation capacities. The deformation capacity exceeded 4% interstory drift angle, which is the requirement for the Special Moment Frame.

  • An experimental study is needed a reinforcing method for seismic load to apply for RC structures because a lot of earthquakes have frequently happened in the world and those also collapsed infrastructures or damaged human lives. The reinforcing effect of PolyUrea (PU) appeared to be excellent under blast and impact about RC structures. In this study, Stiff Type PolyUrea (STPU) had developed by manipulating the ratio of the components of prepolymer and hardener of PU. And the durability performance evaluation of STPU for deterioration and chemical resistance has been performed. Acid environmental exposure test and ultraviolet (UV) exposure test have been performed as the durability performance evaluation for STPU. Concrete carbonation exposure test and freezing and thawing test for concrete coated with STPU have been performed. The experimental result showed that STPU has high resisting capacity and durability in all tests. Therefore, STPU would be used as seismic reinforcement materials.

  • This study aims at developing a new seismic resistant method by using precast concrete wall panels for existing low-rise, reinforced concrete beam-column buildings such as school buildings. Three quasi-static hysteresis loading tests were performed on one unreinforced beam-column specimen and two reinforced specimens with U-type precast wall panels. Seismic resistant test of anchored and welded steel plate connections manifested an average of 2.8 times increase in the maximum loading (average 591.8 kN) in comparison to unreinforced beam-column specimen. The maximum drift ratios were also shown between 1.4% and 2.7%. An analytical study was performed while assuming the RC column on the right side and the vertical element of the reinforced PC panel to behave in completely composite manner and the RC column on the left side and PC panel to behave in completely non-composite manner when loading was exerted from upper right end of RC frame of specimen to its left side. It was found with the assumptions that the overall flexural behavior in principle agreed with the experimental result.

  • After introduction of the earthquake resistant design code, it is required to achieve seismic performance of existing bridges as well as earthquake resistant design of new bridges. The achievement of seismic performance for existing bridges should satisfy the no collapse requirement based on the basic concept of earthquake resistant design, therefore, various methods with different strengthening scale should be suggested according to bridge types and importance categories. At present for typical bridges, most studied and applied strengthening methods are bearing change, pier strengthening and shear key installation for improvement of seismic performance. In this study a typical existing bridge, for which earthquake resistant design is not considered, is selected as an analysis bridge. Design changes are carried out to satisfy the no collapse requirement by way of the ductile failure mechanism and seismic performances are checked. It is shown that the seismic performance of existing bridges can be achieved by way of redesign of bridge system, e.g. determination of pier design section for substructure and change of bearing function for connections between super/sub-structure.

  • Eight RC bridge plers have been made on a 1/3.4 scale model and have been tested in a quasi-static cyclic load so as to investigate their seismic performance. The ultimate objective of this experimental study is to investigate the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete plers, which have been widely used for urban transportation facilities in Korea. Improtant test parameters are hoop ratio, axial load, load pattern, and etc. And noninear behaviors of test columns have been evaluated through their yield and ultimate strength, energy dissipation, ductility and load-deflection characteristics under quasi-static cyclic loads. From the quasi-static tests on 8 bridge piers, it is concluded that energy dissipation, ultimate strength and curvature for a given displacement factor ${\mu}={\Delta}/{\Delta}_y$ are higher for the seismically designed columns than for the nonseismically designed columns.

  • In this research, the seismic connection details for two concrete-filled U-shape steel beam-to-H columns were proposed and cyclically tested under a full-scale cruciform configuration. The key connecting components included the U-shape steel section (450 and 550 mm deep for specimens A and B, respectively), a concrete floor slab with a ribbed deck (165 mm deep for both specimens), welded couplers and rebars for negative moment transfer, and shear studs for full composite action and strengthening plates. Considering the unique constructional nature of the proposed connection, the critical limit states, such as the weld fracture, anchorage failure of the welded coupler, local buckling, concrete crushing, and rebar buckling, were carefully addressed in the specimen design. The test results showed that the connection details and design methods proposed in this study can well control the critical limit states mentioned above. Especially, the proposed connection according to the strengthening strategy successfully pushed the plastic hinge to the tip of the strengthened zone, as intended in the design, and was very effective in protecting the more vulnerable beam-to-column welded joint. The maximum story drift capacities of 6.0 and 6.8% radians were achieved in specimens A and B, respectively, thus far exceeding the minimumlimit of 4% radians required of special moment frames. Low-cycle fatigue fracture across the beam bottom flange at a 6% drift level was the final failure mode of specimen A. Specimen B failed through the fracture of the top splice plate of the bolted splice at a very high drift ratio of 8.0% radian.
