  • Mechanical press joining has been used in sheet metal joining processes because of its simple process and possibility of joining dissimilar metals, such as steel and aluminum. The strength of mechanical press joining varies with joining conditions. The optimum joining conditions considering tensile-shear and peel-tension strength have to be established to assure the reliability in the joining strength. Therefore, optimization of joining conditions has been investigated for improving joining strength of sheet metal. It is possible to obtain optimum strength from improvement on the joining strength of peel-tension mechanical press joint under multiaxial stress states.

  • Mechanical press joining technique has been used in sheet metal joining processes because of its simple process and possibility of joining dissimiliar metals, such as steel and aluminum. The static and cyclic behavior of single overlap AI-alloy and steel(SPCC) joints has been investigate. Relationships were developed to estimate the strength of the joint taking into consideration base metal strength properties and the geometry of the joint. Fatigue test results have shown that fatigue resistance of the SPCC mechanical press joints is almost equal to that of the spot weld at the life of $10^6$ cycles. Also, the dissimilar material jointed specimen with upper SPCC plate and button diameter corresponding to the nugget diameter of the spot welded specimen has almost same strength as the same material jointed specimen and as the spot welded specimen.

  • A mechanical press joining was investigated in ender for joining A1-5052 sheets for automobile body weight reduction. Static tensile and fatigue tests were conducted using tensile-shear specimens for evaluation of fatigue strength of the joint. During Tox joining process for A1-5052 plates, using the current sheet thickness and punch diameter, the optimal applied punching force was found to be 32 kN under the current joining condition. For the static tensile-shear experiment results, the fracture mode is classified into interface fracture mode, in which the neck area fractured due to influence of neck thickness, and pull-out fracture mode due to influence of plastic deformation of the joining area. And, during fatigue tests for the A1-5052 tensile shear specimens, interface failure mode occurred in the region of low cycle. The fatigue endurance limit approached to 6 percents of the maximum applied load, considering fatigue lifetime of $2.5\times10^6$ cycles.

  • There are being a lot of studies for achievement of high speed Dehydration, high-strength and Lightweight of washing machine in the latest washing machine business. It is essential that Press-joining Strength of Spin Drum Seaming division is improved .to attain that target. Generally, we are using Mechanical press-joining by Seaming and T.I.G (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding among part joint method. Mechanical press-joining method that is mainly using for Stainless Steel (STS430) Drum have lots of merit that consumption of energy is low more than welding and production costs cut down and generation of the corrosion is solved by removing weld zone defect and materials having different properties are enable to join without special equipment. But, it is difficult to realize joint strength required at high speed operation because joint strength of mechanical press-joining method is low remarkably in comparison with welding. Also, there are a lot of analysis difficulties and very limited research is under way due to the dynamic factor such as multistage plastic working, elastic recovery, residual stress etc. The results of this study show optimal joining condition for mechanical press-joining by performing lots of tensile joining strength test with various specimen under multi-change of important design factor such as seaming width, bead area and bead depth etc.

  • The application as the parts of an automobile, using the property of GMT-Sheet, is increasing. In order to exchange the parts of an automobile for GMT-Sheet, at first, the establishment and joining problem of exact joining strength must be determined. We have studied it using composites which is not same each other fiber oriented condition so as to determine joining strength and joining condition of GMT-Sheet. In this study, the result of experiment of forming condition concerned joining problem of GMT-Sheet is this ; joining efficiency of GMT-Sheet, increases as lap joint length L increases. Increase of compression ration cause decrease of joining efficiency after of GMT-Sheet, joining. In the viewpoint of recycling, randomly oriented composite of GMT-Sheet is desirable more than unidirectional oriented composite. We have better design the structure so as not occur to stress centralization on the joining part.

  • The application of infrared heating in the hot press forming of the thermoplastic composites is conducive to productivity with high-speed heating. However, high energy, high forming temperature, and high-speed heating derived from infrared heating can cause material degradation and deteriorate properties such as re-melting performance. Therefore, this study was conducted to optimize the process conditions of the hot press forming suitable for carbon fiber reinforced polyetherketoneketone(CF/PEKK) composites that are actively researched and developed as high-performance aviation materials. Specifically, the degradation mechanisms and properties that may occur in infrared high-speed heating were evaluated through morphological and thermal characteristics analysis and mechanical performance tests. The degradation mechanism was analyzed through morphological investigation of the crystal structure of PEKK. As a result, the size of the spherulite decreased as the degradation progressed, and finally, the spherulite disappeared. In thermal characteristics, the melting temperature, crystallization temperature and heat of crystallization tend to decrease as degradation progresses, and the crystal structure disappeared under long-term exposure at 460℃. In addition, the low bonding strength was observed on the degraded surface, and the bonding surfaces of PEKK did not melt intermittently. In conclusion, it was confirmed that the CF/PEKK composite material degraded at 420℃ in the infrared high-speed heating. Furthermore, the spherulite experienced morphological changes and the re-melting properties of thermoplastic materials were degraded.

  • The tensile and fatigue experiments were conducted with tensile-shear specimens for investigating the strength of adhesive bonded and mechanical press joints of SPCC steel sheet used in the field of the automobile industry. The optimal punch press force was evaluated 50kN for combining epoxy adhesive bonding and mechanical press joining with a diameter of 8.3mm using SPCC sheet with a thickness of 0.8mm. The combining epoxy adhesive bonding and mechanical press joining exhibits the maximum tensile force of 750N. The fatigue strengths of the combination of adhesive bond and mechanical press joint and pure adhesive joint were evaluated 370N and 320N at 106cycles, respectively. These values correspond to 22% and 20% of their maximum tensile forces, respectively. However, the fatigue strength of the combination of adhesive bond and mechanical press joining was much lower than that of pure mechanical press joining.
