The objective of the present study is to establish a straightforward mixture proportioning procedure for structural lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC), and evaluate the selection range of the targeted dry density of concrete against the designed concrete compressive strength. In developing this procedure, mathematical models were formulated based on a nonlinear regression analysis over 347 data sets and two boundary conditions of the absolute volume and dry density of concrete. The proposed procedure demonstrated the appropriate water-to-cement ratio and dry density of concrete to achieve the designed strength decrease with the increase in volumetric ratio of coarse aggregates. This trend was more significant in all-LWAC than in sand-LWAC. Overall, the selection range of the dry density of LWAC exists within a certain range according to the designed strength, which can be obtained using the proposed procedure.
As an effort to utilize the pine woods damaged by pine wilt disease, this study analyzed the density of pine wood nematode and compressive strength of damaged trees treated through soaking and fumigating. The density of nematode in Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii woods soaked in wood vinegar and nematicide, and in seawater reduced greatly in 21 days and in 30 days, respectively. When reextracted nematode was injected artificially into healthy trees, infection was not observed after the lapse of six months, and the mean density of Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii was $0.47g/cm^3$ and $0.54g/cm^3$, respectively, and their compressive strengths were $304kgf/cm^2$ and $363kgf/cm^2$, respectively. As to change in the density of pine wood nematode after fumigating, pine wood nematode was detected until the third month in both species, and those detected afterwards were found to be similar nematodes. After 24 months, the mean densities of Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii were $0.54g/cm^3$ and $0.52g/cm^3$, respectively, and their compressive strengths were $353kgf/cm^2$ and $370kgf/cm^2$, respectively.
This study examined the material properties of MDF manufactured using acetylated pinus radiata fibers against moisture and compared the properties with the fiberboard quality standards of KS F 3200. Since acetylated MDF shows very low moisture content, water absorption and thickness swelling than the quality standards, it is expected to have an excellent dimensional stability. The bending strength in wetting condition of the acetylated MDF reached approximately 70% of the bending strength in dry condition, making it suitable for the quality standards. The internal bond of the acetylated MDF in the wetting condition was higher than the minimum internal bond of the quality standards in the dry condition, showing a good water resistance. Since the water droplet contact angle of the acetylated MDF is larger than that of untreated MDF, it is determined that it contributes in improving the water resistance due to the low wettability.
The behaviors of alkali swelling in four major Korean woods were examined as a function of concentration cf alkali solution. Density of alkali-treated woods increased highly with increasing alkali concentration in both softwoods and hardwoods. Wood samples swelled in dimension during alkali swelling, and thereafter they shrank highly by water washing and air drying. The air-dried wood samples after alkali treatment showed almost isotropic shrinkage in tangential and radial direction.
Physical, mechanical and deteriorating properties of Phellodendron amure were investigated. Air dried density located indoor was 0.41 but $0.43g/cm^3$ outdoor. In oven dry shrinkage, T/R ratio for located indoor was 1.40 but 1.32 outdoor. Hygroscopic property at $40^{\circ}C$ with 90% relative humidity was 16.30% for indoor and 15.80% for outdoor. Compressive strength for outdoor conditioned sample was 43.81 MPa but 40.33 MPa for indoor conditioned. Also bending strenght for outdoor conditioned was 84.63 MPa but 68.80 MPa for indoor conditioned. Impact strength was 3.43 and $4.00J/cm^2$ indoor and outdoor, respectively. Hardness at cross-section was 47.92 and 49.20 MPa indoor and outdoor, respectively. With one-year conditioning at indoor or outdoor, there was no significantly different in strength properties, which came from strong resistance for deterioration. Also Phellodendron amure wood showed dimensionally stable raw material based on low T/R ratio.

Lightweight concrete is known for its advantage of reducing the self-weight of the structures, reducing the areas of sectional members as well as making the construction convenient. Thus the construction cost can be saved when applied to structures such as long-span bridge and high rise building. However, the lightweight concrete requires specific mix design method that is quite different from the typical concrete, since using the typical mix method would give rise the material segregation as well as lower the strength by the reduced weight of the aggregate. In order to avoid such problems, it is recommended to apply the mix design method of self-consolidating concrete for the lightweight concrete. Therefore experimental tests were performed as such mechanical properties(compressive strength, dry density and structural efficiency) of concrete and dry shrinkage according to ACI committee 209.
Since physical and mechanical properties of wood are affected by environmental factors such as soil and climate change, this study investigated relationships between wood quality factors and stand characteristics of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii forest in the southern region of Korea, including Jeollanam-do Province and Je-ju island. The obtained results found very close relationships between physical and mechanical properties of wood and stand characteristics. The air-dried density and strength performance of woods showed a negative correlation with the diameter at breast height (DBH) while they were positively related to altitude and drainage of the forest site. And wood properties showed variations depending on the region. These results brought a conclusion that wood of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii in the southern region could be useful forest resources for timber production.
The recycled polyethylene was used for making wood-plastic composite panels. In this experiment, the sizes of wood particles used were 1/32", 1/4" and 1/2" in mesh number, and the contents of the recycled polyethylene were 10%, 30% and 50%. The physical and mechanical properties of the composite panels were investigated. At a given content of recycled polyethylene, the density of composite panel decreases with the increase of wood particle size. The thickness swelling and water adsorption decrease with the increase of recycled polyethylene, where significantly lower at 10%, compared with at 30%. In the water soaking experiment for 14 days, the dimensional stability of composite panel appeared good in the composite panel with recycled polyethylene content of 30% or higher. As the content of recycled polyethylene increases, the internal bonding strength and the modulus of rupture in bending strength increases. In SEM, the molten recycled polyethylene showed interlocking action through its penetration into tracheid openings including pits as well as binder between wood particles as the matrix material, thus increasing bonding strength and improving the physical and mechanical properties of composite panel.

Recycled aggregates are made from construction wastes, and they have many national and social benefits by saving energy, developing substitute resources, and protecting environment. However, low-quality recycled aggregate with low density and high absorption rate cannot be used for structural concrete aggregate but is used mainly for low added value. Therefore, this study aims to identify the characteristics of the materials of recycled aggregates made after crashing and pulverizing waste concrete. For this, their major physical characteristics of cement content, absolute dry density, absorption rate, etc. were reviewed to make a mix design (draft) for the production of the secondary product and performance evaluation was done on the bending strength, absorption rate, bending strength after freezing and thawing, compressive strength, air-dried gravity, etc. of the test products produced by applying the mix design to compare the results with the quality standards of GR mark. The results of the tests showed that the substitution rate of recycled aggregate increased to 50~90 %, which is of superior quality than the performance standards of GR F 4007. Therefore, it is thought that they can be used for various construction works with certain physical characteristics applicable to the production of secondary concrete products using recycled aggregates.
We examined the effect of pretreatments on seed germination, seedling growth, optimal seedling density of Phellodendron amurense. The seeds were carefully purified after collection in late Oct. from natural population at Mt. Chiri. For the evaluation of pretreatment effects, seeds were sowed in an experimental nursery after being stored in open ground($2{\sim}8^{\circ}C$) with soaking in 20% $H_2O_2$, 50-fold pon-pon solution, cold moist stratification in refrigerator($2{\sim}4^{\circ}C$) and dry storage in roam temperature($4{\sim}18^{\circ}C$), respectively, For the effect of growth density of seedlings, seedlings germinated in nursery were precisely controlled with 53, 104, 220, 380 seedlings per $m^2$. Among pretreatments for the promotion of germination rate, pon-pon treatment(68.8%) was highest, the others were higher than that in dry storage(2.3%), and these seed pretreatment methods were significantly different at 1% level. The height growth of seedlings showed the most vigor from Jun.12 to Jul. 8, and from Jul.20 to Aug. 2, and it reached to 72.8% of height growth. In case of 1-0 seedling, although seedling density per $m^2$ was increased, seedling growth was decreased. The optimal seedling density was 104 seedlings per $m^2$. The standard seedlings for plantation were above height 55cm, root collar diameter 8.1mm, and root length 21cm. These results demonstrated that seed of P. amurense requires stratification for the germination promotion.
