Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the microleakage in class II cavity resin restorations used with resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) lining material depending on two different applying methods; classical delivery method using a dental explorer and a specially designed rotating bur. Materials and Methods: A total thirty-six extracted teeth were prepared with a class II proximal box, and randomly divided into three groups: 1) control group with no lining added and the proximal box restored (Group I), 2) the second group used RMGI as a lining material which was spread with an explorer (Group II), 3) the third group used a specially designed rotating bur to thin out RMGI (Group III). All teeth were restored with the same manner using incrementally placed resin composite. All 36 teeth were prepared and sectioned for the dye penetration test, and observed with a stereomicroscope for scoring the dye penetration. Results: When RMGI liners were used, both groups using an explorer and the special bur with the liner had significantly less microleakage than the control group with no liner (P < 0.05). The 50% of the group with RMGI liner using the bur showed no microleakage under a dye penetration test whereas all the teeth in control group showed microleakage of different degrees. However, there was no statistically significant difference between Group II and Group III. Conclusion: RMGI is an effective lining material to decrease microleakage in class II composite resin restorations regardless of applying methods.

The purpose of this study was to asses the shear bond strengths of 3 types of glass ionomer cement and 1 type of composite resin to dentinal surface with or without ZOE pretreatment. 80 extracted tooth specimens are divided into two groups; the control group (40 specimens) is not treated with ZOE and the other(40 specimens) is ZOE pretreated during 24 hours before bonding procedure. Shear bond strengths were measured with universal testing machine (Instron, Model 4301) and statistically processed by ANOVA and t-test. The results were as follows: 1. Bond strength of the ZOE treated experimental group showed lower than the control group, except chemical cured glass ionomer cement(p<0.05). 2. After ZOE surface treatment, the bond strength of composite resin was superior than glass ionomer cement and all experimental group was decreased (p<0.05). 3. It has nothing to do with ZOE surface treatment, that chemical curing glass ionomer cement was showed lowest bond strength.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether rhBMP-2 (BMP2) could induce synergistic effect with $Pro-Root^{(R)}$ MTA (MTA) in pulpotomized teeth in the rats. Healthy upper first molars from thirty-two, 10 weeks old, Sprague-Dawley rats were used for this investigation. The molars were exposed with round bur, and light pressure was applied with sterilized cotton to control hemorrhage. 1.2 grams of MTA cement was placed in right first molars as a control group. In left first molars, $1\;{\mu}g$ of BMP2 was additionally placed on exposed pulps with MTA. All cavities were back-filled with light-cured glass-ionomer cements. The rats were sacrificed after 2 weeks and 7 weeks, respectively. Then histologic sections were made and assessed by light microscopy. Data were statistically analyzed via student t-test with SPSSWIN 12.0 program (p < 0.05). Inflammation observed in 2 weeks groups were severe compared to the 7 weeks groups. But the differences were not statistically significant. BMP2-addition groups had less inflammation than MTA groups in both periods, though these differences were also not statistically significant. In conclusion, the combination of BMP2 and MTA showed no differences with MTA only for pulpotomy of rat teeth.
The purpose of this study was to compare the adaptation to the tooth structure of five light cured glass ionomer cements (Fuji II LC. VariGlass VLC, Vitremer, Dyract and Geristore). Human, non-carious fifty extracted permanent premolars stored in normal saline were used. Class V cavity preparations were created on the buccal surfaces. The occlusal margin of each cavity was placed on the enamel and the gingival margin was placed on the cementum/dentin. The teeth were then distributed at random into five groups of 10 teeth each. Group 1: Fuji II LC, Group 2 : VariGlass VLC, Group 3 : Vitremer, Group 4: Dyract, Group 5 : Geristore. The prepared cavities were restored with one of the five light cured glass ionomer cements. The manipulation of each material was handled according to the manufacturer's instructions. All samples were placed in incubator of 100% relative humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The roots of the teeth were removed with the tapered fissure bur and the remaining crowns were sectioned buccolingually through the center of restorations. The cut interfaces were gradually hand polished on sandpapers from 300 up to 1200 grit. The adaptation at the tooth/cements interface was assessed by SEM (JSM-840A, JEOL Ltd.). The results of this study were as follows : 1. Group 2 revealed the best adaptation and groups 1, 4 and 5 revealed similar adaptation pattern to the cavity walls. Group 3 revealed the worst adaptation to the cavity walls. 2. Enamel margins showed better adaptation than dentin/cementum margins with each material except group 3. 3. The hybrid layers were observed between the glass ionomer cement and dentin in groups 2, 4 and 5.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of several dual-cure cements by different curing modes. Materials and Methods: One resin-modified glass ionomer cement (FujiCEM 2), two conventional dual-cure resin cements (RelyX ARC, Multilink N), and two dual-cure self-adhesive resin cements (RelyX U200, G-CEM LinkAce) were used. To evaluate the influence of the curing methods, each cements divided into four conditions (n = 20); Condition 1: self-curing for 10 minutes, Condition 2: immediate after 20 seconds light-curing, Condition 3: 24 hours after self-curing, Condition 4: 24 hours after light-curing. The compressive strength and diametral tensile strength were measured with a universal testing machine. All data were statistically analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's test. Results: The results showed the compressive strength and diametral tensile strength after 24 hours in all curing modes were higher than immediate except RelyX ARC light-cured and Multilink N light-cured. The FujiCEM 2 showed lowest values (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The outcome was cement-depend, but there is no significant difference about compressive strength and diametral tensile strength between dual-cure self-adhesive resin cements and conventional resin cements. And this result will be used as a base line data selecting resin cement for favorable long-term prognosis.

For the purpose of providing some suggestions in selection of filling materials used in 'sandwich technique', the bond strengths between glass ionomer cement bases and composite resins were investigated and compared. For lining materials, 'Vitrebond' and 'Ketac-fil' were used. Using these two as bases, 10 of each following resins were built up on the top ; Z-100 (light curing resin) Clear-fil (chemical curing resin), Bis-core (dual cure resin), Dyract (compomer), therfore 10 specimens of each group and total of 80 specimens were made. After storing specimens in $37^{\circ}C$ deionized water for 24 hours, the shear bond strengths were measured under universal testing machine with 50 kg of full load scale and 1mm/min of cross-head speed and obtained the results as follows : 1. Over Vitrebond base, Z-100 showed the lowest bond strength but the other three did not show any difference in bond strength. 2. Over Ketac-fil base, Clear-fil showed the highest bond strength followed by Dyract, Bis-core, and Z-100 showed the lowest bond strengths. 3. Whereas Clear-fil showed the similar bond strengths on the Vitrebond base as other resins, it showed the highest bond strength on Ketac-fil base, which showed some difference in bond strength by differing GIC bases. 4. The bond strengths between base materials and composite resin showed a stronger resin-dependence tendency in cases with Ketac-fil bases rather than with Vitrebond bases.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of light-cured glass ionomer cements to dentin surface according to curing time induced by argon laser. In this study, 160 extracted human molars with sound crown were used. The dentin surface of these teeth were exposed with high speed diamond bur under water spray and polished with 120, 320, 400, 800, 1200 grits sand paper. 160 extracted human molars were randomly assigned into four groups (control, experimental 1, 2 & 3) with 40 teeth each. Control group used a visible light curing unit, XL 1000(3M Co., U.S.A) and experimental groups used argon laser($SPECTRUM^{TM}$). And then each group subdivided into two groups (A, B) according to filling materials. Subdivided A group used Fuji II LC(GC Co., Japan), B group used Vitremer(3M Co., U.S.A). The curing units and curing time of each group were as follows : Control group : visible light, 40 seconds Experimental group 1 Experimental group 2 Experimental group 3 : argon laser, 10 seconds : argon laser, 20 seconds : argon laser, 30 seconds The glass ionomer cements were bonded to dentin surface of each specimen. The specimens were stored in 100% relative humidity at 37"c for 7days. And then, the shear bond strength were measured by universal testing machine(Shimatzu Co. Japan) at crosshead speed of 5mm/min and 100kg in full scale and analyzed statistically. The following results were obtained : 1. Experimental group 2-A showed the highest shear bond strength with $9.87{\pm}1.24$ kgf and control group B showed the lowest shear bond strength with $4.08{\pm}0.78$ kgf(P<0.01). 2. The Fuji II LC showed higher shear bond strength with $9.49{\pm}1.24$ kgf than that of the Vitremer with $4.23{\pm}1.24$ kgf. There was significant difference between Fuji II LC and Vitremer(p<0.01). 3. There was no significant differences among experimental groups according to curing time induced by argon laser. 4. There was no significant differences between control group and experimental groups according to curing units.
An adequate and homogeneous cure of light-activated restroative material is very important for improvement of marginal adaptation and prevention of marginal leakage, secondary caries and pulpal irritation as well as expressing natural physical property of that material. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of surface hardness and cure uniformity of light-activated glass ionomer cements. Restorative(Fuji II LC, Vitremer) and lining(Baseline VLC, Vitrebond) light-activated glass ionomer cements were investigated for this study. The surface hardness of the top and bottom surfaces and cure uniformity of each 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm & 3mm in the thickness of specimen were measured immediately, at 1 hour, 24 hours and 1 week after light activation. The surface hardness change and cure uniformity of all the specimens were measured by Knoop hardness tester. The results were as follows. 1. The surface hardness of top and bottom surfaces in all groups increased with time(p<0.01). 2. Both top and bottom surfaces hardness of Vitrebond group measured immediately after light-activation were significantly lower than those of the other groups(p<0.01). 3. The surface hardness of top and bottom surfaces of restorative light -activated glass ionomer cements was higher than those of lining materials at 1 week(p<0.10). 4. Surface hardness of Vitremer group decreased as the specimen thickness increased, except top and bottom surfaces hardness of the specimen at 1 week(p<0.01). There was no significant difference in the surface hardness of Fuji II LC with changes in the thickness except bottom surface hardness of specimen at 24 hours and 1 week (p>0.05). 5. Surface hardness of Vitrebond group significantly decreased as the specimen thickness increased(p<0.01). There was no significant difference in the surface hardness of Baseline VLC group with changes in the thickness except bottom surface hardness of specimen measured immediately after light -activation(p>0.05). 6. The hardness ratio of top against bottom surface in all groups decreased with time(p<0.05). 7. There was no significant difference in the hardness ratio of top against bottom surface with changes of the thickness except Vitrebond group, 24 hours and 1 week of Vitremer group and 1 week of Baseline VLC group (p>0.05). These results suggest that surface hardness of restorative ligh-activated glass ionomer cements were highter than those of lining light-activated materials. In all groups, the surface hardness and cure uniformity continuously increased with time.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of three light-cured glass ionomer cements to blood contaminated bovine dentin. The materials used in this study were Fuji II LC, Dyract and Variglass VLC. The dentin conditioners were 10% polyacrylic acid, 10% maleic acid and 10% phosphoric acid. 180 lower anterior bovine teeth were selected in this study. The teeth were embedded in acrylic resin and were grounded with 320 to 600 grit silicon carbide paper to create a flat dentin surface. The teeth were divided into SIX groups. The experimental procedures in six groups were as follows; Group l(GF) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Fuji II LC after 10% polyacrylic acid treatment. Group 2(BGF) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Fuji II LC after 10% polyacrylic acid treatment and blood contamination. Group 3(MD) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Dyract after 10% maleic acid treatment. Group 4(BMD) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Dyract after 10% maleic acid treatment and blood contamination. Group 5(PV) : Samples bonded to dentin surface with Variglass VLC after 10% phosphoric acid treatment. Group 6(BPV) : Samples bonded-to dentin surface with Variglass VLC after 10% phosphoric acid treatment and blood contamination. Group 1,3 and 5 were classified into the control groups, while group 2,4 and 6 were classified into the experimental groups. Each group contained 30 samples. After 24 hours water storage at $37^{\circ}C$, all smples were subjected to a shear load to fracture at a cross head speed of 1.0 mm/min with Instron universal testing machine(No. 4467). Debonded surfaces were observed under Scanning Electron Microscope(Hitachi S-2300) at 20kvp. The data were evaluated statistically at the 95% confidence level with Student's t-test. The following results obtained; 1. Shear bond strengths were higher in the control groups(1,3,5 group) than in the experimental groups(2,4,6 group). 2. The shear bond strength of group 5(PV) was the highest in the control groups, and the group 5 was significantly higher than the group l(GF) on the shear bond strength. 3. The group 4(BMD) was the highest on the shear bond strength, and the group 2(BGF) was the lowest in the experimental groups. The group 4(BMD) and 6(BPV) showed a significant difference with the group 2 on the shear bond strength. 4. All the groups showed an adhesive-cohesive failure. except the group 2(BGF) showing adhesive failure.
The shade of restorative materials is very important for successful restoration esthetically harmonized with the natural tooth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color stability and the opacity change of conventional chemical setting and visible light curing glass-ionomer cements for restorative esthetic filling. Specimens of each brand (GC Fuji II and Fuji II LC) were uniformly prepared and divided into three groups: In group l(control group), the specimens received no surface treatment; in group 2, the specimens were coated with varnish and the excess gently blown off; and in group 3. the specimens were coated with light-cured bonding resin and irradiated by a visible light curing unit for 20 seconds on both sides. All specimens were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ and checked after for 24 hours. 2 months. 4 months, 6 months. and 8 months. The color characteristics($L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$) and the opacity(Y%) of all the samples were measured by a spectrocolorimeter and the total color differences(${\Delta}E^*$) and opacity changes(${\Delta}Y%$) were computed. The following results were obtained : 1. The total tolor differences in all groups increased with time. 2. The total color differences of the LC groups after immersion for 8 months in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were lower than those of GC groups(p<0.01), and the total color differences of the varnish or the light-cured bonding resin coated groups were lower than those of the control group with glass-ionomer cements which had no surface treatment(p<0.01). 3. In all groups the translucency decreased with time. 4. In the control group and the varnish coating group. the opacity changes of the GC groups were lower than those of the LC groups(p<0.01) and in the light-cured bonding resin coated group, there was no significant difference between the GC group and the LC group. 5. The opacity changes of the varnish or the light-cured bonding resin coated groups were lower than those of the control group(p<0.01). These results suggest that color change and opacity of conventional chemical setting and light cured glass-ionomer cement were increased with time, and the color changes and the opacity changes of a control group after immersion for 8 months in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were greater than those of the varnish or the light-cured bonding resin coated groups.
