A Study on the Hypersonic Air-breathing Engine Ground Test Facility Composition and Characteristics (극초음속 공기흡입식 추진기관 지상 시험설비의 구성 및 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In order to know the characteristics of the hypersonic air-breahting engine, high altitude and Mach number ground test is necessary. Therefore, high pressure and high temperature condition should be simulated to do ground test of the hypersonic air-breathing engine. In this paper, the hypersonic air-breathing engine ground test facility of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute was introduced and the composition and characteristics were described.

  • Advanced countries in aerospace have been struggle to realize the hypersonic air-breathing system since originating the concept of the hypersonic air-breathing propulsion system during the first half of the twentieth century. At last, NASA's X-43A Hyper-X did successful Mach 10 flight in November 2004. Each countries are running the program to applicate this hypersonic air-breathing propulsion system to SSTO(Single Stage to Orbit) or TSTO(Two Stage to Orbit) vehicle or hypersonic missile system at present. In this paper, we wrote the history and current issues of the hypersonic air-breathing propulsion system and hypersonic flight with the hypersonic air-breathing propulsion system.

Development of the Scramjet engine Test Facility(SeTF) in Korea Aerospace Research Institute (한국항공우주연구원 스크램제트 엔진 시험설비의 개발)

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute started on design and development of a hypersonic air-breathing engine test facility from 2000 and completed the test facility installation in July 2009. This facility, designated as Scramjet engine test facility(SeTF), is a blow-down type high enthalpy wind tunnel which has a pressurized air supply system, air heater system, free-jet test chamber, fuel supply system, facility control/measurement system and exhaust system. In this paper, details of the specifications, and configuration of the SeTF are described. For verifying characteristics of the SeTF, wind tunnel tests are now on progress and some of the data are also described.

  • A high temperature heater is required to supply high temperature air to the hypersonic propulsion system in order to simulate high velocity flying condition during the ground test. Various high temperature heaters were reviewed, categorized, and analyzed in this paper. Heaters were categorized in 4 groups; in-stream combustion heater, electric arc heater, storage heater, and heat exchange heater. Each group has its own advantages and disadvantages, so the heater should be selected considering its purpose.
