  • Hypersonic flowfields over a sphere is calculated by using a nonequilibrium flow solver. The flow solver features a two-temperature model and finite rate chemical reaction models to describe nonequilibrium thermochemical processes. For the purpose of validation, the calculated shock stand-off distance is compared with the experimental data which is measured in a ballistic range facility. The present nonequilibrium calculation well reproduced the experimental shock stand-off distance in the cases where the experimental flowfields are expected to be nearly equilibrium, as well as in the cases to be nonequilibrium flowfields in the velocity range 4000 to 5500 m/s.

  • Numerical characteristics of air chemistry associated with hypersonic flows are described and are compared with those of hydrogen oxygen combustion, applying the partially implicit time integration method to air chemistry. This paper reveals that the time integration of air chemistry needs a chemical Jacobian for stable calculations. However the positive real eigenvalues in air chemistry are relatively smaller than those of hydrogen combustion, and the numerical integration is less sensitive than that with combustion. lt is also found that the application of the partia1ly irnplicit method reduces the computing time without numerical instabilities.

  • The shock tunnel as a hypersonic ground test facility was designed, constructed and its performance test was conducted to reproduce the high speed flow which the hypersonic propulsion system is encountered. The design points were understood and the conceptual design was completed using the quasi one dimensional operation analysis code. After that, the specific performance and compartment design were completed using CFD simulation as the part analysis. The facility was then constructed according to those design results and the performance test was conducted for various operation conditions. In this paper, we suggested the compartment design method using CFD analysis, construction process and various performance test results in detail.

  • K-$\omega$ model is used for simulation of flowfield around the cylinderical afterbody. In addition to two-equation turbulence model, modification terms for the compressibility effects are applied to the simulation. Although the estimations of the skin friction and the surface pressure distribution at hypersonic ramp flowfield were satisfactory, the result of the simulation with the modifications for this flowfield is worse than that of the original K-$\omega$ model. The compressiblility modification terms do negative effects on the estimation. The basic research on the turbulence model for the compressible flowfield has to be further conducted.

  • A Thin-layer Wavier-Stokes equations are applied for the hypersonic flow over blunt bodies with applications to laminar as well as turbulent flows. The equations are expressed in the forms of flux-vector splitting and explicit algorithm. The upwind schemes of Steger-Warming and Van Leer are investigated to predict accurately the heating loads along the surface of the body. A mixed scheme has been presented for the differencing the convective terms and the mixed scheme is found to be less dissipative producing accurate solutions.

  • The interaction between hypersonic free stream and side jet flow at high altitudes is investigated by using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. In order to alleviate the difficulty associated with the large density difference between the free stream and the side jet flow and to simulate the two flows simultaneously, a weighting factor technique is applied. For validation, the corner flow over a pair of plates perpendicularly attached is calculated with and without a side jet, and the results are compared with experiment. For a more realistic configuration, the flow past a blunted cone cylinder shape is solved. The leeward or windward jet is injected into the free stream and the effect on the aerodynamic force and moment is observed at various flow angles. The lambda shock effect and the wake structure are studied in terms of the surface pressure differential. A higher interaction between the free stream and the side jet flow is observed when the side jet is injected in the windward direction.

  • Hypersonic analysis on the KSR-Ⅲ payload configuration has been performed using an axisymmetric Navier-Stokes code. A numerical code based on the Harten and Yee's upwind TVD scheme with simplified curve fits in the chemically reacting equilibrium air was developed. The carbuncle phenomenon on detached shock in front of the payload is controlled by using pressure gradients to tune the dissipation. Chemically reacting equilibrium computations for the reentry flight conditions of Mach No. 10.2, 8, 4.9 are presented and compared with the results of calorically perfect gas.

  • In order to improve the performance of the air breathing engines, it is important to maximize the total pressure recovery through air intake. In this study, we investigated whether the Oswatitsch method, which guarantees the maximum pressure recovery for supersonic intake, is effective at hypersonic speed by compressing the intake air with the same intensity at each ramp. The non-linearity of the shock wave normal Mach number at each ramp stage was analyzed by comparing the compression ramp angle and the number of ramp to the inflow Mach number in terms of compressible thermodynamics and the operation limits of the inlet. Based on this analysis, the Oswaitisch technique yields valid conditions not only in supersonic but also hypersonic flight regime.

  • It is necessary to resolve the absolute velocity as well as Mach number to reflect the high temperature effect in high speed flow. So this region is classified as high enthalpy flows distinguished from high speed flows. Many facilities, such as arc-jet, shock tunnel, etc. has been used to obtain the high enthalpy flows at the ground level. However, it is difficult to define the exact test condition in this type of facilities, because some chemical reactions and energy transfer take place during the experiments. In the present study, a quasi 1D code considering the thermochemical non-equilibrium effect is developed to effectively estimate the test condition of a shock tunnel. Results show that the code gives reasonable solution compared with the results from the known experiments and 2D axisymmetric simulations.
