A Study on the Formative Artistry of Comic Strip Books (컷 분할 그림책의 예술성에 대한 연구)

  • Comic strip is a narrative sequence of cartoon panels. Comic strip book as a visual medium of communication is very effective for grasping objects visually as well as for developing creative thinking and culturing aesthetic sentiments. These aesthetic experiences awaken us to formative sentiments, The purpose of present paper is to study the visual streaming of the illustrated comic strips. The typical comic strip books are analyzed and the characteristic of visual communication is studied. The narrative illustrations in the form of comic strips encourage us to have a prosperous experience and to understand new formative artistry and the remarkable effect of visual experience.

  • Picture book is the artistic format to develop forms an organic relationship with text and illustration. Not only meaning which the text and illustration deliver from the picture book but understand the symbolic meaning can discover new enjoyment of reading picture book. Sees the text and illustration of the picture book at one unit which is put in indivisible relationship and analyzing in semeiology provides the viewpoint which is important in picture book comprehension. The Greimas's theory of signification leads and understands the interaction of the text and illustration of world-famous author Anthony Browne's picture book 'Gorilla'. In addition, analysing the structural connection with text and visual expression it approaches the integrated meaning of a story from a new point of view. From the researches of existing interpreted the Hanna and relationship of dad was simple being lonely but this research sees which there exists not only paternal love but also heterosexuality between Hanna and dad and could newly be interpreted with the viewpoint where heal the discord is principal.

  • This research is based on the design of pictures in picture books, and the spatial representation of illustrations in the picture books contains the significantly important objective. Various texts, pictures, spaces, etc. in a picture must have the operator's various editing skills so that spatial arrangement is made smoothly.In this paper, the characteristics of spatial expression of design in picture books are derived by analyzing several examples of paintings and studies on classic picture books. First, the fusion of picture and text, that is, that both picture and text convey spatial information together as elements of the screen. Second, as a characteristic of the coherence of the space design in picture books, the story and content must be smoothly connected when reading the book. Third, when expressing a space, the creator should utilize the strengths and weaknesses of each other between abstract and conceived spatial expressions as needed. Fourth, as a symbolic feature of picture book spatial expression, it can be seen that many symbolic expression techniques are applied to the spatial expression of picture books according to the semiotic principle, which greatly improves the cognitive efficiency of reading picture books. The fifth characteristic is that the spatial expression of an excellent picture book has excellent interesting element, rich design means, and interestingly conveys screen contents and screen format to readers. In this research, it is thought that designers and artists should guide the creation within a spatial framework as designing picture books, thus greatly improving the efficiency of the creation process, while also provide a reader-centered visual Interesting experience.

Analysis of Children's Preference about the Expression Form of Illustrations in Children's Picture Books (어린이그림책일러스트레이션의 표현형식에 대한 어린이의 선호 분석)

  • This study aims to analyze and compare the difference of preference to realistic and fantastic expressions presented in the illustrations of children's picture books. The subject of this study is set for 52 seven-year-old kindergarten students, including 26 boys and 26 girls, in Cheonan. Two times of researches on their preferences were made on the basis of data collection through individual interviews and self-regulatory questionnaires. A children's picture book, which best demonstrates both realistic and fantastic expressions, was selected as a research tool for such questionnaire from the ones produced and printed within Korea, which either are listed in the Recommended Book List of Children's Book Research Association or received any international award. The result shows that both boys and girls prefer fantastic expressions to realistic ones. It was also found that girls tend to prefer realistic expressions that the boys do. Nevertheless, there definitely was a limitation in thorough analysis by region or age, as they tended to show different responses when they were provided with a picture book with similar theme and story, but different form of expression.

  • Children's Picture Book is the literature with which children face for the first time as a form of close harmony between text and picture. The picture book shows what is happening and also what may happen mn the children's surroundings and takes great Influence on their creativity, thinking ability, emotion, and Intellectual ability by delivering affluent story through the pictures. The color expressed in the children's picture book is as much important as other formative elements such as shape and texture, and the expression of color on the basis of color emotion is much more Important In that It appeals to the children's feeling. The color which is expressed through the illustration of children's picture book conveys distinctly the motion and feeling of characters who are expressed un the picture book as well as distinction of theme and background and expresses persuasively the whole process of plot and atmosphere so that it might convey various emotions such as delight, sorrow, pleasure, wonder, and fear to children. This thesis alms at analyzing various effects of color contrast, process of color, hue variation, and use of color according to the atmosphere of each cut and the process of plot by selecting the children's picture books which were published abroad and home on the basis of color concept, emotion, and image association which children feel In order to Investigate and analyze the symbolism of color and emotional effect expressed through the illustration of children's picture book, and presenting a direction of color use to produce high-level children's picture book with illustrators individuality and artistry.

  • The illustrations of picture book for children transmit not only one image but also the summary and contents of the picture book by connecting images harmoniously. The images of picture book give children a variety of emotion and impression depending upon the location of image at various factors such as blank and form, texture and colors, and space feeling, etc. Therefore, the picture book for children has the continuity transmitting the flow of images by not only the contents of natural story but also uniform and rhythmical factors. The continuity of images can transmit images by visual ideas that are produced depending upon the connections of pictures between writings and picture, between images, and inside images. In such a way, children can understand the contents of story. The paper examines the continuity of the images of the picture book for children and describes correct expressions on harmonious connections of the images made based on children's individuality and ingenuity.

  • Human beings have been leading their life and desirable social life through communication. Human communication has been changed and expanded through language, letters, printing media, broadcasting media, and more recently network communication media. Since the invention of characters, books have been the human beings' communication medium that have the longest history, and they have preserved and succeeded human spiritual world. Children's picture books are also a communication medium composed of the transmitter of the information, message, medium, and the receiver, and makes the process of communication. The sender: writer, illustrator, and editor, analyzes children, special receiver, symbolizes messages, make up contents and make communication come true by selecting media and effectively delivering them to children. Considering the developmental characteristics of the receiver, children and their desires, visual media such as the writings and illustrations. The writings and illustrations are the most appropriate for communication with children. The first, picture books are for the communication between grown-ups and children, and also that with society for helping children find their identity and perform their roles. The second, through the message of writings and illustrations young children acquire human communication ability of this age.   • The layout in picture book is a visual statement that arouses children's psychological reaction upon pictorial positions and those disposition, and that indicates a correlation between theme and background and characters' movements. This study firstly confirmed that children's perception and experience are variously formed according to age, past experience, psychological action, physiological impulse, mentality, growth environment, etc., in order to analyze how the pictorial layout in children's picture book has influence on children visually and psychologically. Likewise, visual and psychological perception was carried out targeting on the children between 4 and 7 years old, based on the perceptive specific and process that have been studied by previous researchers. In addition, the children's picture books published overseas or domestically were presented as the related cases, in order that the facts analyzed may be drawn to harmonious and effective pictorial layout. Lastly, it is expected that the conclusion suggested by this study may be of help to illustrators to design picture books individually and creatively, as well as be applied to studying effective expression in the educant who learn about illustration.

Research on the Spatial Expression Characteristics of illustration in Picture Books (스토리형 그림책 속의 삽화 디자인의 시간적 표현 연구)

  • This paper studies and analyzes the effect of illustrations in picture books on time representation with fictional picture books as the study scope. In this paper, the time type of picture books can be divided into time point, timeline and time rhythm, referring to case analysis from time symbolic elements, picture layout and picture sequence respectively. First of all, time symbolic elements are referred to the time point and time rhythm. The materialized time symbolic element is things that can directly represent time and trigger associations with time; the color symbolic element means the color changes in the real world within a certain time; the contrast of light and shadow corresponds to the changes in a day. Fast-moving objects will be presented with dashed or blurred lines, while static, stable and slow objects will be depicted with solid lines. Secondly, the picture layout of illustrations in picture books is suitable for representing the content of the timeline and describing the sequence or causality of events. Finally, the picture sequence can represent the timeline, time rhythm and "synchronicity". It will make use of visual logic to win readers' trust in time information expressed in pictures, and then follow and connect viewpoints on the basis of adapting to reading habits. The essence of time representation in picture books is to express time by space, and use different combinations of elements in space and visual guidance to convey time information.
