The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of backward walking training on the balance capability(Functional Gait Assessment; FGA, Timed Up & Go Test; TUG) and gait performance(10 meter Walking Test; 10 mWT) of stroke patients. Eighteen with stroke patients were randomly allocated to an experimental and contral group of nine patients each. both groups received general neurorehabilitative physical therapy for 45 minutes per day 5 times per week during 4 weeks. The experimental group also performed additional backward walking training for 20 minutes per day 3 times per week during 4 weeks. There were signicantly increase by backward walking training in outcome of the balance capability from the FGA was increase from $17.67{\pm}1.00scores$ to $19.22{\pm}1.00scores$(p<.05), TUG was decrease from $26.45{\pm}1.37sec$ to $23.28{\pm}1.35sec$(p<.05) and 10 mWT was decreased from $21.74{\pm}1.35sec$ to $18.33{\pm}1.10sec$ (p<.05). These result suggest that backward walking training for stroke patients is effective in improving balance capability(FGA, TUG) and gait performance(10 mWT).
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of balance training on the Inbody and recovery of the balance capability in stroke patient with obesity. The exercise program was to conduct obesity group and normal weight group, 22 subjects were divided equally into experimental(obesity) and controlled group(normal weight), assigned to excercise using the balance training system for 30min a day and 5 days a week. Every pre and post-experimental data of both groups were gathered by Inbody and BSS(Biodex Medical Systems) for 8 weeks. As a result, Comparing the intra-group data measured by Inbody, obesity group showed significant difference in every parameter (p<.05). In the inter-group data, every parameter showed significant difference between both groups (p<.05). Comparing the intra-group data of LOS(Limits Of Stability), obesity group showed significant difference with all parameters, except with 'Backward' and 'Left' (p<.05). In the inter-group data, 'Forward' parameter showed significant difference. Comparing the intra-group data of PS(Postural Stability), obesity group showed significant difference with all parameters (p<.05). The inter-group PS(Postural Stability) results differed significantly only with 'Med/lat'(p=.000). The above results implicate about the following conclusions that the balance training had a big effect on the Inbody and recovery of the balance capability in stroke patient with obesity.

Objective : This study investigated the effect of intensive weight shift training (IWST) on the ability to balance in a sitting posture of children with spastic cerebral palsy (SCP). Methods : One child with spastic diplegia participated in this study for a total of 8 weeks using the ABA experimental design. For the pre-intervention period (A1), general physical therapy (GPT) for children with SCP was performed. The intervention period (B1 and B2), GPT and IWST were conducted for children with SCP, and GPT was conducted again for the post-intervention period (A'1 and A'2). Trunk control capacity was measured using the Korean Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS-K) and Biorescue (RM Ingenierie, France). Results : All TCMS-K variables increased from A1 to B2, and decreased from B2 to A'2. The total area with limit of stability (LOS) increased from A1 to B2, and decreased from B2 to A'2. The ratio of the left/right (Lt/Rt) and anterior/posterior (Ant/Post) LOS area was closer to 1, meaning symmetry, in B2 than in A1. The ratio of the Lt/Rt LOS area decreased further from 1 in A'2 than in B2. The ratio of the Ant/Post LOS area was closer to 1 in A'2 than in B2. Conclusion : IWST had a positive effect on the improvement of balance in the sitting posture of a child with SCP. The results suggest that IWST might help to improve the balance abilities of children with SCP for independent sitting, postural control, and activities of daily living.
The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in balance and upper extremity (UE) function associated with reaching training for children with quadriplegic cerebral palsy based on Biomechanical Frame of Reference. The baseline (phase A) lasted one week. The therapeutic protocol consisted of three reaching training (Phase B) for 40 minutes three times a week. Intervention phases lasted 4 weeks. The CMS-70P (Zebris Medizintechnik Gmbh, Germany) was used to evaluate the qualitative changes in UE function and Pediathc Berg Balance Scale was used to test the balance. The observed performance changes seem to be associated with the presence of intervention and suggest that biomechanical training can be a useful intervention to improve not only manual function but also balance.

The purpose of this study was to develop a balance chair for improving pelvic correction and postural balance through postural balance training using tactile feedback by a vibration motor provided in real time according to the user's attitude. We built a body frame using mono cast(MC) Nylon, Touch thin film transistor(TFT) for user interface, a main control module using Arduino, a 9-axis acceleration sensor for user's posture determination, and a vibration module for tactile feedback. The prototype of the Balance Chair which surrounds the outside was made with cushion for sitting conformability. In order to verify the effectiveness of the postural balance training system using the built prototype, the muscle activity (% MVIC) of the left and right iliocostalis lumborum those are the main muscles of the spinal movement was measured with ten female subjects. And the balance ability before and after training was measured using Spine Balance 3D, a posture balance ability evaluation device. The muscular activities of the left and right iliocostalis lumborum showed the balance activation according to vibration feedback during exercise protocol and postural balance improved after balance exercise training using balance chair. This study could be apply to use the fundamental research for developing the various postural balance product.

The study was conducted to determine the effect of trunk pattern training in proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation(PNF) and weight-shift training on the muscle activity and static balance in patients with hemiplegia due to stroke. Twenty patients with hemiplegia due to stroke were assigned to the trunk pattern training in PNF group(n=10) or weight-shift training group(n=10). Both groups were executed conventional treatment for 5 times per week for 6 weeks 30 minutes per session. Each group performed additional training for 20 minutes. Post training, compared to the weight-shift training group, trunk pattern training in PNF group showed significantly increased on muscle activity of rectus femoris, gastrocnemius and static balance(p<.05). These results support the perceived benefits of trunk pattern training in PNF to augment on the static balance and muscle activity of stroke patients. Therefore, trunk pattern training in PNF is feasible and suitable for stroke patients.
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of exercise on a hemiparkinsonian rat model. Nigrostriatal dopamine cell lesions were produced by injecting 6-hydroxydopamine at the left medial forebrain bundle of rats. In this study, the rats were divided into the following 4 groups: the control group without any exercise, experimental group I with aqua-exercise (Exp I), experimental group II with balance exercise (Exp II) and experimental group III with complex exercise (aqua-exercise+balance exercise; (Exp III)). Exercises were applied to all the experimental groups after the operation. In order to observe the dopaminergic cell loss, we assessed the level of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression in the midbrain of rats, and performed the apomorphine-induced rotation test at postoperative days (PDs) 7, 14, and 21. Experimental groups had significantly higher TH-immunoreactivity and behavioral performance than the control group. However, there was no difference in TH-immunoreactivity and behavioral performance across the experimental groups. These results suggest that the application of aqua-exercise and balance exercise could suppress dopaminergic cell loss in the substantia nigra of rat brains and could increase behavioral recovery in hemiparkinsonian rats.
This study investigated the effectiveness of visual biofeedback simulation training for patients with incomplete spinal cord injuries. Fifteen people with an ASIA impairment scale of C and D, according to the intervention method, were studied. They were randomly divided into two groups, seven people in the experimental group and eight people in the control group. They were studied three times a week for six weeks using a Tetrax Interactive Balance System, for a total of eighteen times, and each test took fifteen minutes. Paired t-tests were used to evaluate the changes before and after intervention. The difference between the groups was compared using an independent t-test. The experimental group showed significantly increased general stability, fall risk index, weight distribution (A, C, D, LEFT, HEEL) and weight distribution index, except for synchronization AC, BD. However, the control group only showed significantly increased weight distribution (A, C, LEFT). In a variation, experimental and control groups showed significantly increased weight distribution (A, B, C, HEEL), general stability, fall risk index and synchronization AD. Consequently, it was found that visual biofeedback simulation training was effective for the balance ability of incomplete spinal cord injury patients, and further studies are required.
