  • Tnermomechanical treatment consisting of homogenizing, hot and warm rolling were introduced to Al-MgCu-Mn alloys for obtaining superplasticity. The factors affecting the superplasticity of the alloys were investigated by optical and transmission electron microscopy. Large particles which had not been decomposed during homogenizing treatments remained stable in the hot and warm rolling processes. These particles were a source of cavitation and poor elongation in superplastic deformation. On the other hand, fine precipitates were produced during thermomechanical processing, and resulted in improvement of superplasticity by stabilizing microstructure. Two-step homogenizing and air cooling process was more effective than onestep homogenizing and furance cooling process in removing microsegregations and producing fine particles.

  • The GFRP composite is used for hot press flow molding of automotive components, and the different flow rates of fiber and plastic are likely to induce fiber orientation and inhomogeneity in the material. However, very limited systematic research studies are available on composite materials with superior flow homogeneity and optimized fiber orientation. The inhomogeneity and fiber orientation issues of GFRP composites have still not been resolved through research. The plain weaving method applied to the GFRP prepreg can improve its recyclability, inhomogeneity, fiber flow, structural stability, fiber deformation, surface smoothness, degree of impregnation, and other mechanical properties. The need for more detailed and thorough studies is evidenced.

  • A cylindrical constant volume combustion bomb is used to investigate the combustion characteristics and to analyze the heat quantity of homogeneous charge methane-air mixture under various initial pressures, excess air ratios and ignition times. As the overall pressure increase, the values of maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release have been increased. But it is not very meaningful to compare with some values such as maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release for different overall pressure due to the different heat energy of supplied fuel. So the each value is needed to be compared with normalized value, which is divided by the entered fuel energy. To analyze the heat quantity, some definitions including the CHR ratio, the UHC ratio and the HL ratio are needed and are calculated. As the overall pressure increase, the CHR ratios and the UHC ratios have been decreased, while the HL ratios have been increased. The CHR ratio of 300 ms has the higher value than that of 10000ms, and the HL ratios of 300 ms have a lower value.

  • The catalytic combustor has the advantage of stable combustion under very lean conditions with low emissions of $NO_x$, CO and unburned hydrocarbon(UHC). Notwithstanding these advantages, the commercial application of the catalytic combustion has been delayed due to the complicated reaction process. For the stable operation of catalytic combustor, study on the combustion characteristics of the catalytic combustor is needed. So, in this study, numerical study on the propane combustion characteristics of the catalytic combustor with Pd-based catalyst is performed.

  • A high resolution numerical method aimed at solving cavitating flow is proposed and applied to gas-liquid two-phase shock tube problem. The present method employs a finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL TVD scheme. By applying the homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model, the present density-based numerical method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field, including wave propagation and large density changes. The speed of sound for gas-liquid two-phase media is derived on the basis of thermodynamic relations and compared with that by eigenvalues. By this method, a Riemann problem for Euler equations of one dimensional shock tube was computed. Numerical results such as detailed observations of shock and expansion wave propagations through the gas-liquid two-phase media at isothermal condition and some data related to computational efficiency are made. Comparisons of predicted results and exact solutions are provided and discussed.

  • The detector of a focal-plane-array mid-wave infrared (MWIR) camera has different response characteristics for each detector pixel, resulting in nonuniformity between detector pixels. In addition, image nonuniformity occurs due to heat generation inside the camera during operation. To solve this problem, in the process of camera manufacturing it is common to use a gain-and-offset table generated from a blackbody to correct the difference between detector pixels. One method of correcting nonuniformity due to internal heat generation during the operation of the camera generates a new offset value based on input frame images. This paper proposes a technique for dividing an input image into block image patches and generating offset values using only homogeneous patches, to correct the nonuniformity that occurs during camera operation. The proposed technique may not only generate a nonuniformity-correction offset that can prevent motion marks due to camera-gaze movement of the acquired image, but may also improve nonuniformity-correction performance with a small number of input images. Experimental results show that distortion such as flow marks does not occur, and good correction performance can be confirmed even with half the number of input images or fewer, compared to the traditional method.

  • The spatial fuel vapor distribution of the homogeneous charge by a 6-hole injector was examined in a optically accessed single cylinder direct injection spark ignition(DISI) engine. The effects of in-cylinder charge motion, and fuel injection pressure, and coolant temperature were investigated using a planar LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique. It was confirmed that the in-cylinder tumble flow played a little more effective role in the spatial fuel vapor distribution than the swirl flow during the compression stroke at 10 mm and 2 mm planes under cylinder head gasket and the increased fuel injection pressure activated spatial distributions of the fuel vapor. In additions, richer mixtures were concentrated around the cylinder wall by the increase of the coolant temperature.

  • The P-wave velocity at the formation which contains gas hydrate varies very wide upon gas hydrate existence. These features on seismic shot gather can not be simulated normally by numerical modeling of homogeneous medium so that we need that of random inhomogeneous medium instead. We, in this study generated random inhomogeneous medium using gaussian ACF, exponential ACF and von Karman ACF and that we supposed the random inhomogeneous medium be gas hydrate formation to execute numeric modeling. The modeling result shows the typical effect by scattering caused by random hydrate formation as is observed from seismic shot gather where hydrate exist.
