  • In this paper, the quantitative damage index for reinforced concrete (RC) columns with non-seismic details were presented. They are necessary to carry out the postearthquake safety evaluation of RC buildings under 5 stories without seismic details. The static cyclic test of the RC frame sub-assemblage that was an one span and actual-sized was first conducted. The specimen collapsed by the shear failure after flexural yielding of a column, lots of cracks on the surfaces of columns and beam-column joints and the cover concrete splitting at the bottom of columns occurred. The damage levels of these kinds of columns with non-seismic details were classified to five based on the load-displacement relationship by the test result. The residual story drift ratios and crack widths were then adapted as the quantitative index to evaluate the damage limit states because those values were comparatively easy to measure right after earthquakes. The highest one among the residual story drift ratios under the similar maximum story drift ratio decided on the residual story drift ratio of each damage limit state. On the other hand, the lowest and average ones among the respective residual shear and flexural widths under the similar maximum story drift ratio decided on the residual shear and flexural widths of each damage limit state, respectively. These values for each damage limit state resulted in being smaller than those by the international damage evaluation guidelines that are for seismically designed members under the same deformations.

  • This paper presents an analytical model for calculation of crack widths in reinforced concrete structures. The model is mathematically derived from the actual bond stress-slip relationships between the reinforcement and the surrounding concrete, and the relationships summarized in CEB-FIP Model Code 1990 and Eurocode 2 are employed in this study together with the numerical analysis result of a linear slip distribution along the interface at the stabilized cracking stage. With these, the actual strains of the steel and the concrete are integrated respectively along the embedment length between the adjacent cracks so as to obtain the difference in the axial elongation. The model is applied to the test results available in literatures, and the predicted values are shown to be in good agreement with the experimentally measured data.

  • When cracks occur in reinforced concrete structures, a steel carries all tensile force at crack section, while the concrete between cracks carries a part of the tensile force due to bond, so that the steel is less elongated. This is called the tension-stiffening effect, that plays an important role in verification of a serviceability limit state. But it is a complicated work to use a complex strain distribution between cracks, therefore an average strain is used to calculate deflection and crack width. In Eurocode 2, tension-stiffening effect expressed in the first order form or the second order form is used in calculating an average curvature for deflection. In this study for a flexural member deflection and crack width are calculated using various models for the tension-stiffening effect and the results are compared with the values of Eurocode 2 and KCI provisions. As results, the predicted values using the second order form are appeared to be well agreed with the experimental values and it could secure more analytical consistency.

  • This paper describes a proposal for average crack width and immediate deflection calculation in structural concrete members. The model is mathematically derived from actual bond stressslip relationships and tension stiffening effect between reinforcement and the surrounding concrete, and the actual strains of steel and concrete are integrated respectively along the embedded length between the adjacent cracks so as to obtain the difference in the axial elongation. With these, a model for average crack width and immediate deflection in reinforced concrete flexural members are proposed utilizing difference in the axial elongation and average steel strain and moment-curvature relationship with taking account of bond characteristics. The model is applied to the test specimens available in literatures, and the crack width and deflections predicted by the proposal equation in this study are closed to the experimentally measured data compared the current code provisions.

  • Crack widths play an important role in the serviceability limit state. When crack widths are controlled sufficiently, the reinforcement corrosion can be reduced using only existing concrete cover thickness due to low permeability in the region of finely distributed hair-cracks. Thus, the knowledge about the tensile crack opening is essential in designing more durable concrete structures. Therefore, numerous researches related to the topic have been performed. Nevertheless accurate measurement of a crack width is not a simple task due to several reasons such as unknown potential crack formation location and crack opening damaging strain gages. In order to overcome these difficulties and measure precise crack widths, a displacement measurement system was developed using digital image correlation. Accuracy calibration tests gave an average measurement error of 0.069 pixels and a standard deviation of 0.050 pixels. Direct tensile test was performed using ultra high performance concrete specimens. Crack widths at both notched and unnotched locations were measured and compared with clip-in gages at various loading steps to obtain crack opening profile. Tensile deformation characteristics of concrete were well visualized using displacement vectors and full-field displacement contour maps. The proposed technique made it possible to measure crack widths at arbitrary locations, which is difficult with conventional gages such as clip-in gages or displacement transducers.

  • This paper predicted the shear deformation, such as strain of shear reinforcement and shear track width, of reinforced concrete (RC) members using Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM) in order to apply to the shea, analysis of RC buildings. To check the validity of TATM for the shear deformation of RC beams, four RC beams with different shear span-to-depth ratios were cast, instrumented and tested. Observed results were compared with theoretical results by MCFT(Response-2000), RA-STM, FA-STM, and TATM. The proposed model, TATM, better predicted the relationships of the shear stress-strain of shear reinforcement and the shear stress-shear track width than other truss models.
