In order to investigate the impact properties of structural materials for LNG tank, instrumented Charpy impact tests were carried out at cryogenic temperatures. $9\%$ Ni steel showed a superior fracture resistance because of less degradation in toughness until 77 K. From the load-deflection curve obtained by an instrumented methods it was found that with the decrease of temperature from 173 K to 77 K, the peak load in the curve increased, but the total absorbed energy decreased. In addition, the energy absorbed during the crack growth was larger than one absorbed in the process of crack initiation. In SUS304L material, the energy absorbed in the process of the crack initiation was relatively large, but the energy absorbed in the process of crack growth was small, the behavior of absorbed energy was well agreed with the observations of the fracture surface which showed a relatively smooth fracture surface. The absorbed Charpy impact energy in the case of A5083 alloy was lower as compared with other steels, and some cracks were observed along the crack propagation direction at the fracture surface of 77 K.

For the CT specimen of 25.4mm thickness SS400 steel, the fracture toughness and the magnitude of constraint effect, $A_2$ on the non-linear elastoplastic fracture behaviors were experimentally estimated by crack tip opening displacement. In order to estimate constraint effect, displacement measurement position near crack front should be the existed within plastic region. But it is found that the displacement measurement positions by the ${\delta}_5$ method are in elastic region at crack growth initiation. Hence the estimate of constraint effect, $A_2$ by the ${\delta}_5$ method was not reliable.

Catastrophic fracture cannot be avoided after cracks(initiated from pre-existing defects) propagate rapidly with speeds comparable to a sound wave velocity of the materials. Preventing catastropic failure, crack arrest fracture toughness defined from dynamic(or kinetic) fracture mechanics point of view has been introduced in determining accurate and/or proper crack arrest fracture toughness of a material. For the past decades, many studies have been carried out to render proper theoretical and experimental backgrounds on the use of the static plain strain crack arrest fracture toughness, $K_{1a}$ (which seems to be a material property). $K_{1a}$ has been used to predict the performance of thick walled structures and has been considered as a measure of the ability of a material to stop a fast running crack. Determination of such a material property is of prime importance to the nuclear reactor pressure vessel and bridge materials industries. However, standards procedures for measuring toughness associated with fast running cracks are yet to exist. This study intends to give insight on the determination of the crack arrest fracture toughness of materials such as polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), SM45C-steel, and A1 7075-T6. The effects of crack jump lengths and fast crack initiation stress intensity factor on the determination of $K_{1a}$ have been experimentally observed.erved.

In the case of surface cracked plate specimen, we can not measure the fracture toughness of ductile materials by the ASTM E 813 standard method. In this report, using the Acoustic Emission method, we found out crack initiation point and investigated fracture toughness which was calculated by FEM. The method used in this paper shows that fracture toughnes by using AE technique is reliable.
Fracture toughness of rock is a constant that can indicate the initiation and propagation of cracks due to blasting, excavation, etc. Scaled model tests have been applied to the behavior of tunnels and the stability of limestone mines. Through the scaled model, damaged zone evaluation due to blasting is also carried out, and the scale factor is not applied to the failure-related factors. In this study, DCT (diametral compression test) and finite element method ATENA2D numerical analysis results were compared to determine whether the scale factor could be applied to the fracture toughness of rock. The theoretical values of the scale factor applied to the fracture toughness of the rock and the DCT test results and the numerical results are 0.21~0.46, 0.40, and 0.99MPa ${\sqrt{m}}$ respectively, so these three values should be considered when determining scale factor. It is necessary to derive a suitable scale factor in consideration of the length, time, and mass to which the scale factor is applied, as well as the values of the scale factor of major design factors such as uniaxial compressive strength and density.
This study has observed that the dynamic behavior of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) in low velocity impact varies with impact velocity. MMCs with 15 fiber volume percent were fabricated by using the squeeze casting method. The AC8A was used as the matrix, and the alumina and the carbon were used as reinforcements. The tensile and vibration tests conducted yielded the yielded the tensile stress and elastic modulus of MMCs The low pass filter and instrumented impact test machine was adopted to study dynamic behaviors of MMCs corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact energy of unreinforced alloy and MM s increased as the impact velocity increased. The increase of crack propagation energy was especially prominent, but the dynamic toughness of each material did not change much. To show the relation between crack initiation energy and dynamic fracture toughness, a simple model was proposed by using the strain energy and stress distribution at notch. The model revealed that crack initiation energy is proportional to the square of dynamic fracture toughness and inversely proportional to elastic modulus.

In order to predict the elastic-plastic fracture toughness for metallic materials, Finite Element Method(FEM) was used for analysis of compact tension specimen. ASTM E399 test procedure was adopted for simulation of FEM. The Load-Crack Mouth Opening Displacement curve obtained from this analysis was used to detect the crack initiation point and determine the elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{IC}$. In order to prove the results, they were compared with the results from previous experiments and they agree with experimental results.

This paper presents a methodology for predicting stable crack growth and instability of a cracked body under monotonically increasing load. It is based on a model that incremental crack extensions and load increments after fracture initiation occur by turns in sequence and the criterion that the crack grows by an incremebt .delta.a when the opening displacement at the current crack tip increases by a critical value V$_{c}$. It is shown that the value I$_{c}$ = V$_{c}$/ .delta. a is a material constant characterizing ductile crack growth resistance. Along with the fracture initiation toughness value, the constant is used for the calculation of the loads against crack extensions by adding up each increment. The specimen failure is defined to occur when the necessary load increment for crack extension is zero or when the limit load in the current ligament is reached. The predicted failure loads are in good agreement with the avaliable experimental failure loads for the compact and center-cracked tension specimens of 7075-T651, 2024-T351 aluminum alloys and 304 stainless steel.steel.

Fracture mechanics is used for the detailed analysis of the failure of high-speed rotating cylindrical vessels. The general procedure for the analysis of fatigue life and failure used in this study is summarized; the initial material properties are also described. The results of the theoretical stress analysis are compared to the observed magnitude of the stress under the operational condition. The fracture-surface configurations observed under both optical and scanning electron microscopes are used to investigate the progress of fatigue crack propagation. Fatigue life estimates obtained by using the Paris model are compared to the actual service life of the high-speed rotating pressure vessel.

Fracture toughness is a material property for crack initiation and propagation in fracture mechanics. For mode I fracture toughness measurement in concrete, RILEM committees 89-FMT proposed three-point bend tests based on the two-parameter fracture model. But, there is no proposed test method as a standard for mixed mode test for now. And RILEM three-point bend test procedure is complicate. Therefore, in this study, brazilian disks of various size were designed as the concrete with a similar specified concrete strength and maximum size of coarse aggregate($G_{max}$) were respectively 20mm and 40mm. And mode I fracture toughness of brazilian disks was compared with that of RILEM three-point bend test. As a result, it was suggested appropriate size(thickness, diameter) and notch length ratio of brazilan disk on the $G_{max}$. And it was verified that stress intensity factors for mixed mode can be easily calculated with the disk specimen. Stress intensity factors of a concrete brazilian disk were evaluated with finite element analysis and five terms approximation for comparison.
