  • The finite element analysis was performed for the cracks existing in residual stress fields in order to investigate the effects of configuration of residual stress distribution to the fatigue crack opening behaviour. And the variation of stress distributions adjacent to the crack caused by uploading was examined. The finite element model with contact elements for the crack plane and plane stress elements for the base material and the analytical method based on the superposition principle to estimate crack opening behaviour and the stress distribution adjacent to the crack subjected to uploading were used. The results of the analysis showed that crack opening behaviors and variations of stress distribution caused by uploading were changed depending on the configuration of residual stress distribution. When the crack existed in the region of compressive residual stress and the configuration of compressive residual stress distribution were inclined, a partial crack opening just behind of a crack tip occurred during uploading. Based on the above results, it was clarified that the crack opening behaviour in the residual stress field could be predicted accurately by the finite element analysis using these analytical method and model.

  • For the purpose of clarifying the influence of welding residual stress to the fatigue crack propagations behaviour, an analytical investigation based on finite element method is performed to examine the opening behaviour of tip-closed crack in the compressive residual stress. A finite element model comprised of contact elements for the crack plane and plane stress elements for the base material is used to evaluate crack opening stress of the crack existing in the residual stress field. Also an analytical method based on the superposition principle to estimate the length of opened part of tip closed crack and the stress distribution adjacent to the crack during uploading is applied to the finite element model. The software for the analysis is ABAQUS, which is a general purpose finite element package. The results show that stresses distributed on the crack surfaces are reduced and approached to zero as the applied stresses are increased up to crack tip opening stress and no mechanical discontinuity is found at the boundary of contact elements and plane stress elements. It is verified that the opening behavior of the fatigue crack in the residual stress can be predicted by finite element method with the proposed analytical method.

  • The fatigue crack propagation rate has so far been measured by the effective stress intensity factor range Δ K/sub eff/. But no research has been done to study how much the crack opening ratio influences the expectation of the fatigue crack propagation. Therefore, this paper evaluates of the crack opening ratio on the fatigue crack propagation life by using the method of parameter sensitivity study. Summarizing the result ; ( 1 ) When the crack opening ratio U' is high, the effect of U' gets larger than any other except for the material factor m. But when U' is low, the effect is also diminished. Therefore, the selection of the lowest value possible is desirable in the evaluation of life. (2) When the value of the material factor m is high, the effect of crack opening ratio U' is increased, at the same time the effect of the other parameters also increased wholly. The effect of material factor m itself on life is high, but in case the material factor m is high, that the effect of each parameter on life get higher is unique. In designing, better attention to the material selection should be drawn. (3) In case the stress ratio R gets smaller, the effect of crack opening ratio U' is unchangeable. But the effect of R itself remarkably decreases, and the effect of material factor m somewhat decreases.

  • It is important to calculate the exact crack opening area in the cracked pipe subjected to axial force and bending moment. Among many solutions for obtaining the crack opening displacement, Paris-Tada's expression, which is derived from energy method, is open used in fracture analysis for piping crack problems because of its simplicity. But Paris-Tada's equation has conservativeness when radius over thickness ratio(R/t) is ten or less, for it is based on the stress intensity factor solution having a compliance function derived from a simple shell theory. In this paper we derived a new expression using a different stress intensity factor solution which is able to consider the variation of compliance through wall thickness in a cracked pipe. Conservativeness of both equations was examined and compared to finite element analysis results. Conservativeness of the new equation is decreased when R/t > 10 and increased slightly when R/t < 10 compared with Paris-Tada's. But Both equations were highly conservative when R/t < 10 compared with finite element analysis results.

  • Dynamic crack propagation in ductile steel is investigated by means of impact loaded 3 point bending specimens. The specimen has the size of $320{\times}75\;mm$ with a thickness of 10 mm. One static and two dynamic experiments with impact velocities of 30.2 m/s and 45.2 m/s are carried out. High speed photography is used to obtain crack growth and crack tip opening displacement data. Direct measurement of the relative rotation of the two specimen halves is made by using Moire interference pattern. The experiments indicate no or only a slight influence of the loading rate on the crack propagation.

  • In this study, the possibility of evaluating the peculiar fracture strength of weldment in high strength steels was investigated by means of a small punch(SP) test. In order to obtain the ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) of SP energy by which the fracture strength of weldment in structural steels such as SS41 and SM53B steels had been evaluated in our preceding publication, the effects of notches and loading rates on SP energy were discussed. It was found that the correspondence of SP energy to critical COD at test temperature -196.deg. C showed a linear relation with some deviation. The empirical correlation with scatter band, Esp/(Esp)p = 1.67[.delta./(.delta./sub c//(.delta./sub c/)/sub p/]-0.55, was developed between the SP energy ratio and critical COD ratio of each weld structure compared with parent material at test temperature -196.deg. C. In addition, there did not appear to be a significant effect of test materials and specimen size etc. on the correlation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the flexural behavior of high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams with compressive strength of 130 MPa. The paper presents experimental research results of steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams with steel fiber content of 1.0% by volume and steel reinforcement ratio of less than 0.02. Both of normal-strength rebar and high-strength rebar were used in the test beams. Modeling as well as compressive and tensile strength test of high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete was performed to predict the bending strength of concrete beams. Tension modeling was performed by using inverse analysis in which load-crack mouth opening displacement relationship was considered. The experimental results show that high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams and the addition of high-strength rebar is in favor of cracking resistance and ductile behavior of beams. For beams reinforced with normal-strength rebar, the ratio of bending strength prediction to the test result ranged from 0.81 to 1.42, whereas for beams reinforced with high-strength rebar, the ratio of bending strength prediction to the test result ranged from 0.92 to 1.07. The comparison of bending strength from numerical analysis with the test results showed a reasonable agreement.

  • This paper concerns the flexural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) beams with compressive strength of 150 MPa. It presents experimental research results of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced UHPC beams with steel fiber content of 1.5% by volume and steel reinforcement ratio of less than 0.02. This study aims at investigating of compressive and tensile behavior of UHPC to perform a reasonable prediction for flexural capacity of UHPC beams. Tensile behavior modeling was performed using load-crack mouth opening displacement relationship obtained from bending test. The experimental results show that steel fiber-reinforced UHPC is in favor of cracking resistance and ductility of beams. The ductility indices range from 1.6 to 3.0, which means high ductility of hybrid steel fiber-reinforced UHPC. Test results and numerical analysis results for the moment-curvature relationship are compared. Though the numerical analysis results for the bending capacity of the UHPC beam without rebar is larger than test result, the overall comparative results show that the bending capacity of steel fiber-reinforced UHPC beams with compressive strength of 150 MPa can be predicted by using the established method in this paper.

  • The aging of plant structures due to industrialization in the 1970s has increased the demand for blast demolition. While blasting can reduce exposure to environmental pollution by shortening the demolition period, improper blasting design and construction plans pose significant safety risks. Thus, it is vital to consider optimal blasting demolition conditions and other factors through collapse behavior simulation. This study utilizes a 3-D combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) code-based 3-D DFPA to simulate the collapse of a chimney structure in a thermal power plant in Seocheon, South Korea. The collapse behavior from the numerical simulation is compared to the actual structure collapse, and the numerical simulation result presents good agreement with the actual building demolition. Additionally, various numerical simulations have been conducted on the chimney models to analyze the impact of the duct size in the pre-weakening area. The no-duct, duct, and double-area duct models were compared in terms of crack pattern and history of Z-axis displacement. The findings show that the elapse-time for demolition decreases as the area of the duct increases, causing collapse to occur quickly by increasing the load-bearing area.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the cyclic behavior of the reinforced concrete frame with infilled steel plate. For this purpose, three-story compositewalls using infilled steel plates (RCSPW) were tested. The parameters for this test were the reinforcement ratio of the column and opening in the infilled steel plate. A reinforced concrete infilled wall (RCIW) and a reinforced concrete frame (RCF) were also tested for comparison. The deformation capacity of the RCSPW specimen was significantly greater than that of the RCIW specimen, although the two specimens exhibited the same load-carrying capacity. Like the steel plate walls with the steel boundary frame, RCSPW specimens showed excellent strength, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity. Furthermore, by using infilled steel plates, shear cracking and failure of the column-beam joint were prevented. By using a strip model, the stiffness and strength of the RCSPW specimens were predicted. The results were compared with the test results.
