  • The whole track system is designed and maintained to provide satisfactory geometry. Renewal and collection decisions are often governed by track irregularities. To provide cost-effective track to meet in the need in the future it is essential to be able to improve the methods by which the performance of the track is monitored and to have reliable methods for prediction and planning. This paper develops computer-aided system for analysis and management of track irregularities. The main objective is to collect and monitor track irregularities for each conventional line to be used as an aid in making decisions on track correction and renewal. The final decision especially on track renewal, however, always be a decision made by man and not by computer-aided system.

  • The railroad roadbed plays an important role in distributing and transferring the train loading to subgrade, preventing subgrade from bearing softened by providing appropriate stiffness for subgrade, and eventually supporting the track structures. Presently, the reinforced roadbed was widely constructed in high speed line and is proceeding a research about economical thickness and methodologies for the design of reinforced roadbed. Field test section is located at Kongbu line which is from Suwon to Pungtack. In this study, field test were measured a track irregularity with several types of reinforced roadbed materials by using Track Master. The field testing were conducted between March, 2006 and March, 2007.

  • This paper shows an algorithm for identifying track irregularities using wavelet transfer function along the railway. An equivalent SISO wavelet transfer function is defined using continuous wavelet transform by the measured track geometry and acceleration at a bogie of a train. The estimated track geometry is made by inverse continuous wavelet transform from the regressed signals of measured acceleration signal and the pre-defined wavelet transfer function. The estimated rail irregularity geometry is evaluated by the coherence function and comparison of FRF(Frequency Response Function). As a result of evaluated outcome, This algorithm is regarded as appropriate for estimation of rail irregularity.

  • Track geometry changes by traffic loads. The bigger the changes are, the worse the riding comfort and running stability of train. This is so-called track irregularity and is the most important quality parameters of ballasted track. To objectively assess track irregularity, track geometry should be able to be measured. Practically, railway companies in Korea use normal distribution as probability distribution of track irregularity. But some countries use non-normal distribution according to their own track recording system. In this report, reviewed probability distribution of Kyung-Bu high-speed line and tested normality.

  • In this study, to grasp the stability of train and to identify the track irregularity, the algorithm was proposed. As the track deformation occur due to running train, the dynamic characteristics of train show non-linearity. The representative transfer functions of wheel to car response were calculated from the frequency response functions which were estimated from measured triaxial accelerations. The measured acceleration responses were compared with the estimated responses from filtered acceleration outputs. This result could show the non-linearity of train system at the location of track deformed. The proposed algorithm was verified by matching with the site investigation.

  • KTX trains which began passenger service between Seoul and Busan in April 2004 have gained very high evaluation for their safe operation. Track is one of the most important means to keep KTX safety, it has not been a fail of safe structure. The track failure during operation may lead to a severe accident. So, it is to be verified the confidence of track maintenance management on the high speed line. This paper would like to find a track deformation trend through a comparative analysis on actual measurement data at these times. It discusses the effect of cyclic dynamic load at welding part. KTX dynamic impact load was measured in accordance with a rail surface irregularity and analyzed some track irregularities according to the condition of rail profile at welding part in the Gyeongbu high speed line.

  • The MINDO/3 method was used in determination of transition states and activation barriers for various 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,5-sigmatropic hydrogen rearrangements involving systems with central carbon atom. It was found that, besides the consideration of orbital symmetry, steric effect, aromaticity, and orbital interactions were found to dictate the stability of the transition state. For systems with hetero atoms, lone pair orbitals tend to ease orbital distortion required at the transition state by participating in hydrogen transfer process and were found to lower the activation barrier accordingly. Comparison of the relative barrier heights with those obtained by using more sophisticated ab initio MO calculations showed that the MINDO/3 results give qualitatively the same tendency of the relative order of the activation barriers.

  • With speed up of railway, the demand for safety of the railroad transportation is on the increase in Korea's conventional railways. In additions, freight trains with heavier axle load are required to run conventional railways. In order to solve these requirements, the increase of rail weight and the application of long rail system have been underway in conventional railways. However, the research on ties that is absolutely influencing the track stiffness in ballasted tracks has not been much progress. In this paper, the new H-typed tie is developed to increase the track stiffness and reduce the track irregularity. And from the structural analysis by FE program, the intial design drawing of the new H-typed tie is proposed.

  • Track maintenance works based on track geometry recordings are essential to enhance the safety and comfort of railway transportation. Usually, the track irregularity has been measured by a special inspection trains which all were imported from abroad. Because the inspection train speed is limited under 160 km/h, it takes a long time to inspect railways and there is difficulty in daytime operation. To solve this problem, we started to develop a track geometry measuring system (TGMS) with measurement speed up to 300 km/h which can be installed in commercial vehicles such as HEMU-430X. In this paper, we introduce a newly developed inertial TGMS and propose two inertial navigation system (INS) algorithms (method A, B) for measuring track geometry. In order to investigate advantage and disadvantage of each algorithm, we performed vibration test of the TGMS, which was simulated by 6-axis shaking table. Through the vibration test, we analyzed the influence of vehicle vibration on the TGMS which will be installed on bogie frame. To the vibration test, two methods satisfied the required accuracy of track geometry measurement under the level of the actual vehicle vibration of HEMU-430X train. Theoretically, method A is sensitive to vehicle vibration than method B. However, HEMU-430X's bogie vibration frequency range is out of interest range of measurement system. Therefore, method A can also apply the HEMU-430X train.
