Excavation Behavior of an Earth Retaining Wall Supported by Large Diameter Soil-cement Blocks (대구경 소일-시멘트 교반체로 보강한 토류벽의 굴착 시 거동 분석)

  • This paper presents an analysis of excavation behavior of an earth retaining wall supported by large diameter soil-cement blocks at a field trial site. The concept and design philosophy of the large soil-cement block reinforcement are described first. The wall behavior during sequential excavations up to 9.8 m is analyzed based on the measured lateral wall movements and earth pressures. The settlements of adjacent ground are examined by field measurements and inverse numerical analysis. The results indicate that, when the lengths of the soil-cement blocks were over 0.45 H (H: wall height), the displacements and the earth pressures induced by the excavations were similar to those supported by conventional methods such as soil nailing.

Deformation Behavior and Slope Stability Effect of Anchored Retention Walls Installed in Cut Slope (절개사면에 설치된 앵커지지 합벽의 변형거동 및 사면안정효과)

  • In order to establish the design method of anchored retention walls in cut slope, the behavior of anchored retention walls and backside ground needs to be investigated and checked in detail. In this study, the behavior of anchored retention walls was investigated by instrumentation installed in cut slope for an apartment construction site stabilized by a row of piles and anchored retention walls. When the anchor was installed at each excavating stages, the horizontal deflection of retention wall decreased, while the horizontal deformation of backside ground increased. The deflection of anchored retention wall decreased as the anchor was prestressed. The prestressed anchor farce has a great effect on the deflection of retention walls, while it has little effect on the deformation of its backside ground. The maximum horizontal deflection of anchored retention walls was developed between $1\%\;and\;4\%$ of excavation depth, which are $2\~8$ times larger than max. horizontal deflection of anchored retention walls including rock layers with backside horizontal ground. Meanwhile, SLOPILE (ver. 3.0) program analyzes the slope stability effects for anchored retention walls. As a result of analysis on slope stability analysis, the lateral earth pressure applied at anchored retention piles could be used as the mean values of empirical lateral pressures using anchored retention wall with horizontal ground at its backside.

Control Method of Adaptive Duty-cycling for Monitoring System in Excavations (굴착현장 모니터링 시스템을 위한 적응적인 듀티사이클링 제어 기법)

  • Geotechnial engineering projects that requires excavation activity can cause massive ground deformation and this can damage adjacent structures. Depending on the engineering characteristics of ground material and the excavation depth, the ground movement is various. To overcome this issue, the ground deformation is monitored by multiple sensors. Typically, an inclinometer is installed behind the support wall. In this paper, we present an adaptive duty-cycling control mechanism using wireless sensors for monitoring ground deformation in excavations. The proposed mechanism dynamically adjusts the sleep time based on the urgency degree of sensed data from inclinometer. Through analytical evaluation of expected latency time, we confirm our adaptive duty-cycling mechanism has lower latency compared with periodic duty-cycling mechanism under variable conditions.

  • This paper presents the effect of tunneling on bridge pile foundation being operated using three-dimensional numerical modeling. Also the parametric study on the depth of tunnel of which the diameter was 10 m was carried out in order to evaluate the behaviors of pile foundation due to the tunnel excavation. This paper expresses the changes of vertical and horizontal displacement, movement of soil and stress of the pile. Based on the results obtained from the numerical analysis some insights into the changes of pile foundation behaviors due to variations of tunneling location were mentioned and discussed.

Development of Steel Pipe Attached PHC Piles for Increasing Base Load Capacity of Bored Pre-cast Piles (매입말뚝의 선단지지력 증대를 위한 강관 부착 PHC파일 개발)

  • Bored pre-cast piles using PHC piles is widely used in foundation of building structures constructed in urban areas because noise and vibration due to pile installation are low. However, since slime is formed at the base of borehole and the density of bearing stratum surrounding the base of borehole is decreased due to stress relaxation in drilling process of bored pre-cast pile method, the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles is very low compared to the strength of bearing stratum. In this study, a new type of PHC pile, which short steel pipe with the same diameter as the PHC pile is attached to the pile tip, is developed to increase the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles. In order to check the effect of the use of new PHC pile on the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles, field pile load tests are performed for bored pre-cast piles using the new and existing PHC piles. Results of the pile load tests show that the new PHC pile gives higher base load capacity to bored pre-cast piles than the existing PHC pile, since the tip of new PHC pile is penetrated to undisturbed bearing stratum passing through the slime at the base of borehole and the loosened bearing stratum under the slime by pile driving using light hammer.

The Case Studies on Application of Mat Foundation System to Building Structure Founded on Weathered Ground (풍화대지반에 지지된 건축구조물의 전면기초 적용에 관한 사례 연구)

  • In construction of buildings in Korea, the buildings are frequently founded on the weathered ground (weathered soil/rock, fractured rock). In this case, to make a full use of a bearing capacity of a weathered ground for economic design, the shallow mat foundation system could be used. In this study, we have researched three cases of mat foundations on the weathered ground in Korea, and analyzed and considered the design procedures and the reinforcing methods. That is, we have considered the detail design, analysis proceedings, the ground settlement evaluation proceedings, the rock face mapping evaluations after excavation and reinforcing methods of the mat foundation on the weathered ground. And large scale plate load tests on the weathered ground supporting the mat foundation were performed and also load bearing capacity and settlement of actual mat foundation, considering the scale effect, were evaluated.

  • Recently, deformation of operating railway structures has occurred due to adjacent excavation works such as new structures and utility tunnel expansion concentrated around downtown areas. However, most of them are focused on structural review, repair and reinforcement of structures. A review of the Track is insufficient. In particular, in the case of the gravel track on the earthwork subgrade, the subgrade and the ballast are not solidified. A slight level of deformation can cause ballast relaxation. Sleeper support conditions may lead to unstable conditions. Sufficient safety must be ensured. In addition, it is a track type with a high risk of train derailment due to unstable support conditions. In this study, the correlation between the deformation characteristics of gravel tracks and track support performance according to subgrade deformation is experimentally and analytically verified. In addition, an evaluation technique that can evaluate the condition of the gravel track and the track support stiffness is presented.
