  • We investigated the weathering characteristics of On-Yang gneiss by means of geological survey and Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR). The results of geological survey and boring show the two sets of vertical joint and horizontal joint developed by foliation which is composed of salic and melanic layers. GPR section evidently shows foliation direction and differential weathering due to discontinuity and mineral composition of metamorphic rock. The GPR section for instantaneous phase attribute based on complex trace analysis evidently shows continuity and foliation direction of metamorphic rock. The strong reflection amplitude which is derived from the banded structure of weathered rock can be incorrectly interpreted as a reflection of bedrock. The depth of rock basement should be estimated from the overall exploration result such as boring, seismic method, and electrical resistivity method.

  • The aim of this study was to provide basic data that could identify and help prevent a slow-moving landslide using an analysis of the relationship between below-ground characteristics and water from three slow-moving landslide areas in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. Surface surveys, resistivity, seismic exploration, well logging, and boring surveys were conducted in the three areas. The main direction of discontinuous surface was matched with the slope direction of the three landslides. The results indicatedthat slow-moving landslides might occur in the direction of the slope. Underground water was distributed within the crush zones within the three landslide areas and flowed along the tensile cracks. There was a significant difference (p<0.01) between the mean angle of the tensile cracks and that of the underground waterflow (p=0.8019). These results indicated that the progress of a slow-moving landslide can be forecast by monitoring the location and flow of underground water within a known slow-moving landslide area.

  • In order to study unconsolidated sediments upstream of the Soyang Dam, seismic refraction data were recorded along five profiles of 94 m length. Receiver interval and record length were 2 m and 204 ms, respectively. Recorded data were analyzed using the traveltime tomography and delay-time methods in order to reveal sediment distribution in the investigation site. The acoustic basements are buried at approximately 14 m deep and their thickness shallows to southeast approaching to a hill. On the basement, pre-existing sediments deposited before construction of the Soyang dam lies. This sedimentary layer is composed of paleo-soil and sandy sediments. Above this layer, recent sediments comprise the top layer which is believed to have been deposited since the formation of the dam. Average thickness of this uppermost layer is approximately 1.6 m, which is much thicker than in the downstream.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome and Factors that influence the quantity of Phoria in the low correction and perfect correction. Also the coincidence with the opticenter and the pupillary distance was a principal factor that influence the quantity of Phoria. Thereupon, this study is attributed to promote the perfect Phoria test. The subjects for this study were 120 persons(240 eye) in myopic refractive errors. ISP/WIN program was used for the data analysis. The collected data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and Spearman's correlation coefficient. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The prism pattern was difference between low correction and perfect correction in the Phoria test. The proportion of orthophoria was changed from 10.0% to 12.5%, exophoria was changed from 67.5% to 62.5%, and esophoria was changed from 22.0% to 32.5%, respectively. 2. The average of optical center distance and pupillary distance were 31.70mm and 31.49 mm, respectively. 3. Among the 120 myopic glasses wearers, the distance between optical centers was coincided with the pupillary distance in 37.5%, and discrepant in 62.5%. 4. For the patients who were coincided with the pupillary distance, the proportion of exophoria decreased 53.33%, esophoria increased 20.0%. 5. For the changing of the quantity of Phoria in the low correction, the degree of exophoria decreased 1.11 prism diopters in the perfect correction, esophoria increased 0.39 prism diopters.

  • Based on the scalar wave equation of optical fibers, the dispersion characteristics of arbitrarily profiled fibers were analyzed. We used the I-D FEM employing quadratic interpolation fucntions to solve the scalar wave equation. We simulated the DC optical fibers as objects, and searched for the refractive index distribution to minimize the total dispersion. In DC fibers, we found the design parameters for which the total dispersion was almost zero at $\lambda=1.3{\mu}m and 1.55{\mu}m$ simultaneously. We also found the design parameters where the dispersion was flattened, less than 1.0 ps/km.nm for$\lambda=1.4~1.7{\mu}m$1. and the dispersion was as low as 0.65 ps/km.nm at $\lambda=1.55{\mu}m$..

  • The best way of investigating the physical and mechanical properties of subsurface materials is the combined interpretation of data from borehole geophysical surveys and geotechnical experiments with rock samples. In this study two surface seismic surveys with refraction and surface-wave method are alternatively conducted for downhole seismic surveys in test site for geological field trip in Jeungpyung, Chungbuk. P- and S-wave velocity structures are delineated by refraction and MASW (multichannel analysis of shear waves) methods, respectively. Possion's ratio section, reconstructed from P- and S-wave velocities, is correlated to the outcrop geological features consisting of reddish sedimentary rock, gray volcanic rock, and joints/fractures. In addition, rock samples representative for reddish sedimentary and gray volcanic features are geotechnically analyzed to provide physical, mechanical properties, and elastic modulus. Dynamic elastic moduli estimated from geophysical data is found to be higher than the one from geotechnical data. Reddish sedimentary rock characterized with low porosity and moisture content corresponds to the zone of low electrical resistivities and their small variations in the resistivity sections between the rainy and dry days. This trend suggests that the weathered gray volcanic rock and the nearby fractures with higher low porosity and moisture content are interpreted to be good carrier especially in rainy season.

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain a large amount of saline groundwater around coastal aquaculture farms. Thus, we have proposed a method for evaluating the potential amount of saline groundwater resources through the combined analysis of geophysical methods. Refraction seismic survey and electrical resistivity survey were conducted in the vicinity of fish farm at Hadong, Gyeongnam Province. As the result, the velocity of layer in the range of 900 ~ 2,400 m/s was found to be saltwater aquifer with high water content. Geological drilling investigation and analysis of soil samples also showed that the soil at study area was the same as the texture of sandy loam layer in agricultural radial collector wells installed by KRC (Korea Rural Community Corporation). Futhermore, the study area turned out to be quite possible to develop saline groundwater from the coastal shallow aquifer. Therefore, parallel analysis of refraction seismic surveys and electrical resistivity surveys at coastal area are expected to be very useful for the detection of the aquifer composed of sand and gravel layers with high porosity in sandy sedimentary layers along the coastal area.

  • We fabricated $HfO_2$ thin films using RF magnetron sputtering method, and investigated structural and optical properties of $HfO_2$ thin films with RTA temperatures in $N_2$ ambient. $HfO_2$ thin films exhibited polycrystalline structure regardless of annealing process, FWHM of M (-111) showed reduction trend. The surface roughness showed the smallest of 3.454 nm at a annealing temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ in result of AFM. All $HfO_2$ thin films showed the transmittance of about 80% in visible light range. By fitting the refractive index from the transmittance and reflectance to the Sellmeir dispersion relation, we can predict the refractive index of the $HfO_2$ thin film according to the wavelength. The $HfO_2$ thin film annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ exhibited a high refractive index of 2.0223 (${\lambda}=632nm$) and an excellent packing factor of 0.963.

  • In this paper, a cylindrical photonic crystal waveguide with a low-index core is first proposed. The core can be filled with air, liquid, or arbitrary dielectric materials. Exact analyses for the electromagnetic field characteristics of guided modes, by using appropriate Bessel functions and applying the boundary conditions, are performed to find out the guiding characteristics of the proposed waveguide. For verification and usage in design and manufacturing process, the computer-calculation of the waveguide transmission characteristics is also performed by applying the rigorous full-vectorial finite difference method. Providing variations of the effective area for the fundamental mode of the designed waveguide with different numbers of cladding layers, ranging from 2.6056 ㎛2 to 5.9673 ㎛2 over the operation wavelength, generally as the core refractive index n1 is higher, the mode area becomes smaller and the result leads to more optimistic effect for nonlinear device applications.
