Subsurface Investigation of Dokdo Island using Geophysical Methods (물리탐사기법의 독도 지반조사 적용)

  • Electrical resistivity and seismic refraction surveys were conducted to investigate geologic structures and geotechnical characteristics of the subsurface, along with rock physical property measurements in Dokdo island. The survey results in Seodo island show that the fault adjacent to the fisherman's shelter is a normal fault and extended towards the NW direction, and that Bedded Lapilli Tuff in the downstream was more severely influenced by weathering and erosion than Trachy Andesite II in the upstream of the survey area. In Dongdo island, Trachy Andesite III and Scoria Bedded Lapilli Tuff were severely weathered and eroded, considered as weathered to soft rock formations, and their weathered zone becomes thicker towards the antiaircraft facility in the NE direction of the survey area. The study results also illustrate that Trachyte and Trachy Andesite are hardest, Massive Tuff Breccia is next, and Stratified Ash Tuff is the most soft rock in Dokdo island.

Site Characteristics Around the Gongsansung Circular Pond in Gongju Based on the Seismic Methods (탄성파탐사를 이용한 공주 공산성 원형연못의 지반조사)

  • We applied the seismic method to investigate the site characteristics around the Circular Pond (top diameter 7.3 m, bottom diameter 3 m, and depth 4.78 m) at the Ssangsujung Park within the Gongsansung in Gongju. Previous excavations for the cultural assets beneath the Ssangsujung Park disclosed the assumed site of the Palace of the Beakje Dynasty and the Circular Pond containing the Bakje relics. We demonstrated that the seismic prospecting can be applicable to delineate the underground structure around the cultural properties by the three kinds of seismic approaches: walk-away test, conventional refraction method, and equal-distance refraction survey. The last method which is designed by this work ran detect the I-W variations of seismic velocity in the subsurface medium across the Circular Pond on the basis of the difference of the P-wave arrival times between the 1-m-spacing 24 geophones and the corresponding 24 shots parallel with the geophone profile. From the combined results, prominent three-layer velocity structure is observed around the Circular Pond. The bottom layer is interpreted as the basement rock which is exposed near the Ssangsujung whereas the upper layer with relatively lower velocities is interpreted to be the artificial covering. The basement depth beneath the Circular Pond is deeper than the norhern area. The western basement of Circular Pond has the thicker weaker layer compared with the eastern part. Thus, the middle layer could be constructed as the artificial foundation during the Beakje Dynasty. Consequently, the Kong-sansung Circular Pond is possibly built upwardly rather than digging.

Determination of optical properties of Pr3+-doped selenide glasses of Ge-Sb-Se system using spectroscopic ellipsometry (분광타원법을 이용한 Pr 첨가 Ge-Sb-Se 계열 셀레나이드 유리의 굴절률 결정)

  • By using the spectroscopic ellipsometry, we have measured and analyzed the optical characteristics of P $r^3$$^{+}$-doped selenide glasses of Ge-Sb-Se system, a strong candidate material for U band fiber amplifiers. The ellipsometric spectra measured in the transparent wavelengths range of the material were all fitted to a model consisting of ambient/roughness/thin fil $m_strate structures to obtain simultaneously the optical properties such as refractive index, in terms of Sellmeier parameters and film structure of P $r^3$$^{+}$-doped selenide glasses. Repeated measurements on different positions in both polished faces rendered to verify positional dependence of measured spectre-ellipsometric data. Hence, the model made possible the analysis of the optical characteristics of the glasses. Even though surface roughness was mainly responsible for the position dependencies, the averaged refractive indexes were as precise as to reflect the minute compositional change tantamount to 1 mol%. The measured refractive indexes are useful for design of core and clad compositions of single-mode selenide optical fibers.

A Study of Eye Refraction state on old Age (노안의 굴절이상과 안경착용에 대한 연구)

  • This study can provide the accurate information on the treatment of visual acuity of a old ages by test of eye refraction state. The test was performed the visual acuity test by the object methods, and subjects was the over 45 old age. The eye types were 12% positive for emmetropia, 19% for myopia. and 69% for hyperopia, respectively. The abnormal refraction eyes were 3% positive for simple myopic astigmatism, 16% for myopic astigmatism, 14% for simple hyperopia, 5% for simple hyperopic astigmatism, 62% for mixed astigmatism, respectively. The axis of astigmatisms were 72% positive for against-the-rule astigmatism, 21% for with-the-rule astigmatism, 7% for ablique astigmatism, respectively.

지구물리탐사로 고찰한 지반침하

  • 침하지반의 지하구조 해석을 위한 방법으로 전기비저항, 지하투과레이더, 굴절법 탄성파탐사를 실시하였다. 침하가 발생한 지점을 중심으로 조사를 실시하여 보강을 위한 경계를 설정하였으며 그라우팅 보강공사가 이후에 재차 시행되었다. 지반의 침하는 원지반 상부 연약지반에서 발생하였으며 침하량은 최대 50cm 정도이다. 침하의 원인은 해수 유입에 따근 지지력의 감소가 주된 원인으로 추정되며 보강공사 후 상부 연약지반의 전기비저항은 원지반과 거의 같은 크기를 보여준다.

Site-Investigation of Underground Complex Plant Construction by Seismic Survey and Electrical Resistivity (탄성파 및 전기비저항을 활용한 지하복합 플랜트 건설 후보지 탐사)

  • Underground urbanization appears to be a promising solution in response to the shortage of construction sites in the above-ground space. In this context, an accurate evaluation of a construction site ensures the long-term performance of geosystems. This study characterizes potential sites for complex plants built in underground space using geophysical methods (i.e., seismic refraction exploration and electrical resistivity survey) and in situ tests (i.e., standard penetration tests (SPTs) and downhole tests). SPTs are conducted in nine boreholes BH-1-BH-9 to estimate the groundwater level and vertical distribution of geological structures. The seismic refraction method enables us to obtain the elastic wave velocity and thickness of each soil layer for each cross-sectional area. An electrical resistivity survey conducted using the dipole array method provides the electrical resistivity profiles of the cross-sectional area. Data obtained using geophysical techniques are used to assess the classification of the soil layer and bedrock, particularly the fracture zone. This study suggests that geotechnical information using in situ tests and geophysical methods are useful references to design an underground complex plant construction.

Application of Geophysical Survey to the Geological Engineering Model for the Effective Detection in Foundation of Stone Relics (석조문화재 기초지반 파악을 위한 모형지반에서의 탐사기법 적용)

  • To effectively delineate the foundation of stone relics by GPR and seismic refraction methods, a geological engineering model was constructed with alternating layer of soil and gravel to a depth of 3 m. This study was aimed at mapping the boundaries of model ground structure and interfaces of alternating layer using the various frequency antenna in GPR survey and seismic velocities. Compared to the resolution from the high frequency antenna, the image resolution from the survey using 100 Hz antenna is the lower, but with the deeper image coverage. On the contrast, the deeper structure was not mapped in the higher frequency data due to higher absorption effect, but the shallow layered zone was distinctively resolved. Therefore subsurface images were effectively provided by integrating the data with 100 MHz and 450 MHz antennas for the deep and shallow structures, respectively. Regarding the seismic refraction data, the boundaries of the model and interface of the alternating layers were not successfully mapped due to the limit of the survey length. However, the equivalent contours of low velocity extended deep as considerable velocity contrasts with surrounding ground.

Fast Delineation of the Depth to Bedrock using the GRM during the Seismic Refaction Survey in Cheongju Granite Area (굴절법 탄성파탐사 현장에서 GRM을 이용한 청주화강암지역 기반암 깊이의 신속한 추정)

  • Seismic refraction survey is a geophysical method that delineates subsurface velocity structure using direct wave and critically refracted wave. The generalized reciprocal method(GRM) is an inversion technique which uses travel-time data from several forward and reverse shots and which can provide the geometry of irregular inclined refractors and structures underlain by hidden layer such as low velocity zone and thin layer. In this study, a simple Excel-GRM routine was tested for fast mapping of the interface between weathering layer and bedrock during the survey, with employing a pair of forward and reverse shots. This routine was proved to control the maximum dip of approximately $30^{\circ}C$ and maximum velocity contrast of 0.6, based on the panel tests in terms of dipping angle and velocity contrast for the two-layer inclined models. In contrast with conventional operation of five to seven shots with sufficient offset distance and indoor data analysis thereafter, this routine was performed in the field shortly after data acquisition. Depth to the bedrock provided by Excel-GRM, during the field survey for Cheongju granite area, correlates well with the elevation of the surface of soft rock from the drill core and SPS logging data. This cost-effective routine developed for quickly delineating the bedrock surface in the field survey will be readily applicable to mapping of weathering zone in narrow zone with small variation of elevation of bedrock.

  • 비정질 As$_2$S$_3$박막에 레이저광의 조사에 대한 투과율 변화는 굴절률과 흡수계수 변화 등의 비선형 광학 특성에 대한 많은 정보를 제공해준다. 투과 스펙트럼을 측정하여 비정질 As$_2$S$_3$ 박막의 광학 상수를 결정하는 일은 간단하면서도 신뢰도 높은 값들을 얻을 수있게 한다. 본 실험에서는 비정질 As$_2$S$_3$ 박막을 진공 증착법을 이용하여 제작하고, 스펙트로포터미터를 사용하여 박막이론에 따른 굴절률, 흡수계수, 박막의 두께 및 조사된 레이저광에 의한 광학적 상수의 변화등을 측정하였다. (중략)
