  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic parameters of growth traits for improvement breeding in olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus at the 8th generation of selective breeding in April 2021. Growth traits such as total length, body weight and condition factor at 11 months of age were measured for 7,508 individuals with confirmed paternity. Data were analyzed using the restricted maximum likelihood method applied to a multiple traits animal model. The effects of sex and family were significantly different across traits (P<0.05). The heritability values of total length, body weight and condition factor were estimated to be high as 0.479, 0.457, and 0.466, respectively. Correlation analysis between phenotypic and breeding values, indicated that the selection accuracy was 75.9-85.2% for all traits. To increase the selection accuracy for parent fish selection, the sex and pedigree characteristics that affect each trait should be considered. Moreover, further improvement of multiple traits can be achieved if the correlation between each trait is appropriately considered.

  • Immunostimulating effects of fucoidan administration to rockfish Sebastes schlegelii at a concentration of 20 g/kg of diet were evaluated under high water temperature condition. The oral administration of fucoidan mixed with feed at a concentration of 20 g/kg of diet for 2 weeks increased the interleukin 1β gene in the intestine and kidney of fish by 5.7 and 6.3 times, respectively. In addition, when the water temperature was gradually increased from 24 to 31.4℃ for 2 weeks, LT50 delayed by 24 h in the fucoidan treated group compared to that in the control group, and mortality also reduced. Streptococcus iniae infection at a concentration of 1.50×100 CFU/fish at 28℃ delayed LT50 by 12 h in the fucoidan-treated group. Furthermore, the overall survival rate was 0% in the control group and 20% in the fucoidan-treated group. This study confirmed the applicability of dietary additives such as fucoidan as an immune activator of rockfish under high temperature condition.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the abundance of narrow-ridged finless porpoises Neophocaena asiaeorientalis in the West Coast of Korea, where they predominantly inhabit. Sighting surveys were conducted in March and November 2021-2022 using vessels and aircraft during the same time periods and along the same survey transects. The aerial surveys yielded significantly more sightings than shipboard surveys, with 8.5-21.6 times the abundance and 6.3-16.9 times the number of observations. The detection rates were 0.000-0.047 and 0.0103 to 0.539 per km2 for shipboard and aerial surveys, respectively. The densities were estimated to be 0.003-0.061 and 0.236-1.898 individuals per km2 in the shipboard and aerial surveys, respectively. The shipboard survey conducted in March 2022 and the aerial survey conducted in November 2021 had the highest detection rates and abundance. In the coastal waters, shipboard sighting surveys face numerous challenges due to factors such as fishing gear, islands, and shallow water depths. In contrast, aerial surveys have the advantage of a shorter survey period and are less affected by weather, fisheries, coastal lines, and other variables. Thus, they are highly suitable for studying narrow-ridged finless porpoises in the coastal areas of the West Sea.

  • This study analyzed domoic acid (DA), the causative agent of amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP), in shellfish produced in Jinhae Bay, Korea. From January 2018 to December 2020, samples were collected at least once a month from 10 sites in Jinhae bay. This included 170 mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis and 241 oysters Crassostrea gigas. Domoic acid was detected in some samples in collected 2018 and 2019; however, all levels were significantly below the regulatory level of 20 mg/g. Domoic acid was not detected until 2020.Moreover, the detection trend of domoic acid did not show a clear correlation with the shellfish species or season. Calculation of body exposure to domoic acid through shellfish consumption showed that it was below the health-based guidance values in all cases. These results can be used as basic data on domoic acid in shellfish produced in shellfish growing areas and as policy data for the supply of safe seafood. In addition, considering the possibility of changes in marine biotoxins due to changes in aquatic environments, continuous monitoring is necessary.

  • Antimicrobial resistance patterns of Escherichia coli were investigated. Strains were isolated from 310 shellfish, 36 crustaceans, and 12 fish collected off the West Coast of Korea from April 2019 to October 2020. Two hundred and ninety-five E. coli strains were isolated from shellfish, 100 from crustaceans, and 54 from fish. Strains isolated from shellfish showed the highest resistance to ampicillin (27.5%), whereas those from crustaceans were resistant to sulfisoxazole (30.0%) and those from fish were resistant to ampicillin (59.3%) and sulfisoxazole (59.3%). Ceftazidime resistance was observed in strains isolated from short neck and hard clams, whereas gentamicin resistance was observed in strains from fish. Multi-drug resistance was observed in 56 strains (48.7%) isolated from shellfish, 11 (28.2%) from crustaceans and 27 (73.0%) from fish. Depending on the source of isolation, the strains showed specific antimicrobial resistance tendency. Strains isolated from shellfish showed 12 different multi-drug resistance patterns, whereas those from crustaceans showed high resistance (59%) to a single antimicrobial agent and those from fish showed a broad trend of multi-drug resistance to more than eight antimicrobials.

  • Effects of feeding frequency on the growth performance of juvenile starry flounder Platichthys stellatus were investigated. One thousand fifty fishes were distributed into 15 of 500-L flow-through tanks. Triplicate groups of were fed experimental diet with five feeding frequency (one meal every two days, one meal a day, two meals a day, three meals a day and four meals a day) for 9 weeks. Weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR) of fish fed two meals a day were higher than those of fish fed one meal 2 days and one meal a day, but not different from those of fish fed three meals a day and four meals a day. Feed consumption of fish fed two meals a day was not different from that of fish fed three meals a day and four meals a day. Feed efficiency (FE) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed two meals a day were higher than those of fish fed all other diets, except for three meals a day. These results suggest that the optimal feeding frequency is two meals a day for the optimum growth performance of juvenile starry flounder under the experimental conditions.

  • In the last five decades, there has been a consistent decline in the total catch of fisheries in the Korean jurisdiction since the peak in 1986. The decline in catch slowed and slightly rebounded in the 2000s, but changed back to a decline in the 2010s. As indicators that can identify changes in the marine ecosystem, trophic level (TL), biodiversity index (H'), and the ratio between pelagic fish and demersal fish (P/D) were analyzed by each local marine ecosystem. There were some different changes in each local marine ecosystem, but the mean TL and H' decreased and P/D increased in general in Korean waters. Demersal fish, which were dominant in the 1970s and 1980s, declined, and small pelagic fish and cephalopods have dominantly changed since the 1990s. However, these changes are not simple, and they are fluctuating in complex ways relating to each marine ecosystem and the timing. It is believed that changes in marine ecosystems in Korean waters are likely caused by a combination of fisheries and climate change. The ecosystem indicators reflected a change in the total catch, a sharp drop in catch of demersal fish, and increasing catch of pelagic fish since the mid-1980s.

  • Fecal contamination levels of discharge water from inland pollution sources were investigated in Iwon-myeon (Taean-gun), South Korea. Gram-negative bacteria were isolated during the investigation and the antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolates were examined to estimate their impact on the coastal environment. The ranges of total coliform and fecal coliform of 12 samples from four major inland pollution sources were 79-490,000 MPN/100 mL and 2.0-490,000 MPN/100 mL, respectively, with the highest level of fecal contamination at Station No. 3. A total of 137 strains (14 genus) were isolated, of which 86 strains (62.8%) were Enterobacteriaceae. The identified isolates were as follows: Pseudomonas spp. (35 strains), Klebsiella spp. (20 strains), Serratia spp. (20 strains), and Escherichia spp. (19 strains). The isolated Gram-negative bacteria showed the highest antimicrobial resistance to ampicillin (81.8%), followed by amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (64.2%), ceftiofur (61.3%), and cefoxitin (59.1%). Antimicrobials in which less than 10% of isolates showed antimicrobial resistance were ciprofloxacin (3.6%) and gentamicin (2.2%). Resistance to one or more antimicrobials was observed in 121 strains (88.3%) and 84 strains (61.3%) showed a tendency for multiple antimicrobial resistance.

  • To provide information needed for managing fish resources and protecting the ecosystem of Cheonsu Bay, bimonthly variations in species composition and abundance of fish eggs and larvae were investigated. The samples were collected by using bongo net at three different stations from February 2020 to December 2021. Fish eggs were divided into Engrualis japonicas and unidentified eggs, of which Engragulis japonicus accounted for 85.6% of the total eggs collected. A total of 21 species representing 17 families and 6 orders were collected. The three dominant species were Gobiidae spp, Thryssa hamiltonii and E. japonicus and these three species accounted for 74.1% in the total number of individuals. The number of species was highest in August, 2020 and lowest in February, 2020 and 2021; the number of individuals was highest in August, 2020 and lowest in February, 2020. Temporal changes in the abundances of pelagic eggs and larval fishes corresponded with temperature.
