  • The purpose of this paper is to study on the applicability of the standard design response spectrum from the response spectrum analysis method, mainly applied to pile mooring facilities. To this end, after performing the ProShake 1-dimensional site response considering various geological conditions, the current standard design response spectrum was compared, and the ground-pile model in time history and two-dimensional site response analysis using Abaqus were performed to analyze the dynamic behavior of the ground-pile and to examine the selection method of the reference surface of the response spectrum on the installed slope, respectively. As a result, it was confirmed that no problems were found in the applicability of the current standard design response spectrum and no improvements are needed as well when considering the characteristics of the ground-pile dynamic behavior and the slope of the pile mooring facility.

  • PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration) is the parameter which indicates the peak value for strong ground motion and is mainly due to the intensity of the seismic wave. Usually, seismic waves can consist of different characteristics and can have different effects on structures. Therefore, it may be undesirable that the effects of a seismic wave are evaluated only based on the PGA. In this study, time history analysis was executed with a single degree of freedom model for inelastic seismic analysis. The numerical model was assumed to be a perfect elasto-plastic model. Input accelerations were made with El Centro NS (1940), other earthquake records and artificial earthquakes. The displacement ductility demand and cumulative dissipated energy, which were calculated from other artificial earthquakes, were compared. As a result, different responses from other seismic waves which have the same PGA were identified. Therefore, an index which could reflect both seismic and structural characteristics is needed. The SI (Spectrum Intensity) scale which could be obtained from integration by parts of the velocity response spectrum could be an index reflecting the inelastic seismic response of structures. It can be possible to identify from correlation analysis among the SI scale, displacement ductility demand and cumulative dissipated energy that the SI scale is sufficient to be an index for the inelastic response of structures under seismic conditions.

  • The seismic responses of a building are affected by the base soil conditions. In this study, linear time-history seismic analysis and nonlinear pushover static seismic analysis were performed to estimate the base shear forces of 3-, 5-, and 7-story steel buildings, considering the rigid and soft soil conditions. Foundation soil stiffness, based on the equivalent static stiffness formula, is used for the damper, one of the Link elements in SAP 2000. The base shear forces of the steel buildings, estimated through time-history analysis using the general-purpose structural-analysis program of SAP 2000, were compared with those calculated using the domestic seismic design code, the UBC-97 design response spectrum. and pushover static nonlinear analysis. The steel buildings designed for gravity and wind loads showed elastic responses with a moderate earthquake of 0.11 g, while the elastic soft-soil layer increased the displacement and the base shear force of the buildings due to soil-structure interaction and soil amplification. Therefore, considering the characteristics of the soft-soil layer, it is more reasonable to perform an elastic seismic analysis of a building's structure during weak or moderate earthquakes.

  • The base-isolation of building, as appeared in many studies, has shown remarkable performance in seismic response attenuation of the internal system as well as the building structure itself. But for the case that the internal system is submerged and hence subject to a considerable hydrodynamic effect, the seismic response of the system due to the base-isolation of building can be greater than the case that they are in air. This paper presents the dynamic analysis of a submerged internal system on base-isolated building to show such an example. The results show that an additional treatment is required to reduce the adverse effects on the seismic response of such a system when the building is base-isolated, and that the system response can be reduced to some extent by an appropriate control of fluid gap between the system and the building structure.

  • This study investigates the seismic responses of two structures connected by a sky-bridge equipped with viscoelastic dampers (VED) at the bridge-building connections. The applicability of the method is verified first by observing RMS (root-mean-squared) responses of two-degrees-of-freedom systems subjected to white noise ground excitation. Then model structures with various number of stories are analyzed using earthquake ground motions to observe the effect of the varying size of VED on the reduction of dynamic responses. According to the analysis results, there exists a proper size of VED which minimizes the structural responses. It is also observed that the effectiveness of VED increases as the difference of natural frequencies between the two connected structures increases.

  • Nonlinear pushover analysis is used to evaluate the earthquake response of building structures. To accurately predict the inelastic response of a structure, the prescribed story load profile should be able to describe the earthquake force profile which actually occurs during the time-history response of the structure. In the present study, a new modal combination method was developed to predict the earthquake load profiles of building structures. In the proposed method, multiple story load profiles are predicted by combining the modal spectrum responses multiplied by the modal combination factors. Parametric studies were performed far moment-resisting frames and walls. Based on the results. the modal combination factors were determined according to the hierarchy of each mode affecting the dynamic responses of structures. The proposed modal combination method was applied to prototype buildings with and without vertical irregularity. The results showed that the proposed method predicts the actual story load profiles which occur during the time-history responses of the structures.

  • The cask is used to transfer the radioactive material in various fields required to withstand hypothetical accident condition such as 9m drop impact in accordance with the requirement of the domestic requlations and IAEA. So far the impact force has been obtained by the finite element method with complex computational procedure. In this study, the dynamic impact response of the cask body is analyzed using the mode superposition method, and the analysis method is proposed. The results we also validated by comparing with previous experimental results and finite element analysis results. The present method Is simpler than finite element method and can be used to predict the global impact response of cask

  • Industrial machines are sometimes exposed to the danger of earthquake. In the design of a mechanical system, this factor should be accounted for from the viewpoint of reliability to analyze a complex nonlinear structure system under random excitation is proposed. First, the actual random excitation, such as earthquake, is approximated to the corresponding Gaussian process for the statistical analysis. The modal equations of overall system are expanded sequentially. Then, the perturbed equations are synthesized into the overall system and solved in probabilistic way. Several statistical properties of a random process that are of interest in random vibration are evaluated in each substructure. Comparing with the results of the numerical simulation proved the efficiency of the proposed method.
