Analysis of Response Change of Structure due to Tunnel Excavation Conditions in Sand Ground (모래지반에서 터널 굴착조건들을 반영한 상부 블록구조물의 거동변화 분석)

  • This study investigates the response of structures to tunnelling-induced ground movements in sand ground, varying tunnel excavation condition (tunnel depth and diameter), tunnel construction condition (ground loss), ground condition (loose sand and dense sand). Four-story block-bearing structures have been used because the structueres can easily be characterized of the extent of dmages with crack size and distribution. Numerical parametric studies have been used to investigae of the response of structures to varying tunnelling conditions. Numerical analysis has been conducted using Discrete Element Method (DEM) to have real cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The results of structure responses from various parametric studies have been integrated to consider tunnel excavation condition, tunnel construction condition, and ground condition and provided as a relationship chart. Using the chart, the response of structures to tunnelling can easily be evaluated in practice in sand ground.

The response of four-story block structures, which are subjected to tunnelling-induced ground movements, has been investigated in different construction (ground loss) and soil conditions using numerical analysis. The structures for numerical analysis has been modelled using Discrete Element Method (DEM) to have real cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The response of four-story block structures has been investigated with a ground movement magnitude and compared in terms of construction (ground loss) and soil conditions considering the magnitude of deformations and cracks in structures. In addition, the damage levels, which are possibly induced in structures, has been provided in terms of construction (ground loss) and soil conditions using the state of strain damage estimation criterion (Son and Cording, 2005). The results of this study will provide a background for better understandings for controlling and minimizing building damage on nearby structures due to tunnelling-induced ground movements.

  • Population of urban areas is rapidly increased due to urbanization. This situation leads to lack of surface space. So, underground space has been developed for resolving the problem of congested urban areas. Many studies have researched for this situation. However, previous studies mainly focused on behaviour of structures. Researches about behaviour of soil are lacked. For this reason, this study has investigated interactive behaviour between embedded pile and its surrounding ground due to tunnelling. Soil deformation is observed by the close range photogrammetric method and image processing in the model test. These data are compared with numerical analysis.

  • This research work presents 3-D behavior of adjacent structures due to tunnelling induced ground movements by means of field measuring data and nonlinear FEM tunnel analysis. The results of the analytical methods from Mohr-Coulomb model are compared with the site measurement data obtained during the twin tunnel construction. It was found that the location and stiffness of the structure influence greatly the shape and pattern of settlement trough. The settlement trough for Greenfield condition was different from the trough for existing adjacent structures. Therefore the load and stiffness of adjacent structures should be taken into account for the stability analysis of the structures.

  • This study is to investigate the damage assessment of adjacent structures due to tunneling in urban environment. Model tests were carried out with two-story masonry building structures in various shapes and locations. The damage level of adjacent structures were very differently estimated in accordance with the shape ratio (L/h) of structures, construction stages, and various locations. The results of model tests were plotted on the damage level graphs in order to predict the direction of damage levels for the different types of structures (i.e. stiffness of structures, L/h). The progressive crack development mechanism at various construction stages was revealed through model tests and crack size indicated more conservative side of damage level on the damage level graph.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses have been conducted to study the behaviour of a single pile to tunnelling. The numerical analysis has included soil slip at the pile-soil interface. In the numerical analyses the interaction between the tunnel and the pile constructed in weathered soil and rock has been analysed. The study includes the pile settlement, the relative shear displacement between the pile and the soil and the shear stresses at the interface and the axial force on the pile. In particular, the shear stress transfer mechanism at the pile-soil interface related to the tunnel advancement has been rigorously analysed. Due to changes in the relative shear displacement at the pile-soil interface during the tunnel advancement, the shear stress and the axial force distributions along the pile have been changed. Upward shear stress developed at most part of the pile (Z/L=0.0-0.8), while downward shear stress is mobilised near the pile tip (Z/L=0.8-1.0) resulting in tensile force on the pile, where Z is the pile location and L is the pile length. Some insights into the pile behaviour to tunnelling obtained from the numerical analyses will be reported and discussed.

  • Tunnelling in urban areas, it is essential to understand existing structure-tunnel interactive behavior. Serviced structures in the city are supported by pile foundation, since they are certainly effected due to tunnelling. In this research, thus, pile load distribution and ground behavior due to tunnelling below grouped pile were investigated using laboratory model test. Grouped pile foundations were considered as 2, 3 row pile and offsets (between pile tip and tunnel crown: 0.5D, 1.0D and 1.5D for generalization to tunnel diameter, D means tunnel diameter). Soil in the tank for laboratory model test was formed by loose sand (relative density: Dr = 30%) and strain gauges were attached to the pile inner shaft to estimate distribution of axial force. Also, settlements of grouped pile and adjacent ground surface depending on the offsets were measured by LVDT and dial gauge, respectively. Tunnelling-induced deformation of underground was measured by close range photogrammetric technique. Numerical analysis was conducted to analyze and compare with results from laboratory model test and close range photogrammetry. For expression of tunnel excavation, the concept of volume loss was applied in this study, it was 1.5%. As a result from this study, far offset, the smaller reduction of pile axial load and was appeared trend of settlement was similar among them. Particulary, ratio of pile load and settlement reduction were larger when the offset is from 0.5D to 1.0D than from 1.0D to 1.5D.

Numerical analyses for mechanical behavior of cut-and-cover tunnel with precast arch type (프리캐스트 아치형 개착식 터널의 역학적 거동에 관한 수치해석)

  • The thickness of the material can be thinned because arch cut-and-cover tunnel has the support mechanism by the axial force, and the ground reaction force due moderate deformation can be expected thereby making it be dynamically advantageous, therefore the arch cut-and-cover tunnel has become more widely used. An important characteristic of the arch cut-and-cover tunnel is that the thickness of the material can be thinned because precast arch type has the support mechanism by the axial force. However, there is a different stress state surrounding the structures between normally excavated tunnels and cut-and-cover tunnels, it should be considered at designing. Therefore, finite element method was carried out to examine the mechanical behavior of the precast arch cut-and-cover tunnel considering construction procedure.
