  • In this paper, the luminance and resistance from different electrode materials of external electrode fluorescent lamp are measured and analyzed. New materials and process technology of external electrode are very important for the developed characteristics in lamp fabrication. This experiment, three different types for the forming of external electrode are Cu and Al taping, silver paste, Ni and Cu electrode-less plating methods. In the measurement of luminance, the results of brightness by Ni and Au plating methods for the external electrode on lamp glass are presented and also compared with the results by the methods using different electrode materials. The measured resistance values of Ni and Au plating process showed a little bit higher than that of silver paste process in spite of developed results of brightness. The Ni and Ni/Au plating processes are demonstrated best results and also showed a little bit different brightness due to different previous surface etching treatments.

  • Leaching experiments from single metal and metallic mixtures were conducted to develop a process for the recovery of cobalt, copper, and nickel in spent lithium ion batteries. Inorganic and organic acid solutions without oxidizing agents were employed. No copper was dissolved in the absence of an oxidizing agent in the leaching solutions. The leaching condition to completely dissolve single metal of cobalt and nickel was determined based on acid concentration, reaction temperature and time, and pulp density. The leaching condition to dissolve all of cobalt and nickel from the metallic mixtures was also obtained. Leaching of the metallic mixture with methanesulfonic acid led to selective dissolution of cobalt at low temperatures.

  • In this study, the catalytic reaction characteristics for producing hydrogen using methanol steam reforming were investigated. Nickel and copper are frequently used in steam reforming reaction and methanol synthesis, were used as main active metals. As a support, hydrotalcite has a high specific surface area, excellent porosity and thermal stability, and has weak Lewis acid sites and basic properties. Hydrotalcite was used to identify catalysts of methanol steam reforming with catalytic activity and their properties. In this research, high reactivity was shown in the catalyst of copper metal with high reducibility. And increasing of active metal loading showed the higher the methanol conversion and hydrogen selectivity.

  • The effect of Ni content in Cu underlayer on the magnetoresistance of Cu/Co artificial superlattice has been investigated. As the content of Ni increased, the preferred orientation of artificial superlattice changed from fec (100) to fcc (111) due to the change of the preferred orientation of the underlayer. When the content of Ni was 6 %, 26.7 % of magnetoresistance with 175 Oe of saturation field could be obtained in ${[Cu(19\AA)/Co(30\AA)]}_{20}|Cu-6%Ni(200\AA)/Si$.

  • Nutrients and trace metals of copper and nickel were investigated in the inner part of Deukryang Bay (southern coast of Korea) during 1980-81. This region is characterized as permanently well-mixed coastal waters. Because of this hydrographic condition, nutrients and trace metals showed interesting features in their seasonal cycles. The concentrations of dissolved nutrients and dissolved trace metals were higher in fall and winter than in spring and summer, while the concentrations of suspended particulates and particulate trace metals were much higher in winter than the rest of the year. Seasonal changes of nutrients suggest that the addition of nutrients via freshwater runoff during the late summer enhanced phytoplankton growth and subsequently caused phytoplankton blooms in winter. Depletion of nitrate seems to terminate phytoplankton bloom in this region, and copper and nickel appeared to be controlled by the in situ primary production.

  • Korea has been one of the top ranked countries in the per capita and total consumption of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni since economic development based on manufacturing industries. The current instability of mineral demand and supply in Korea is likely to continue or exacerbate in accordance with economic growth in developing countries such as BRICs. Korea needs to increase the self-development portion of strategic mineral resources including Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni. Our analysis of mineral demand and supply data predicts a long-run instability of supply and demand for main minerals used in the Korean manufacturing industries, and suggests a long range government policy for stable supply of core mineral resources.

  • New nickel(II) and coppr(II) complexes of a saturated pentaaza macrobicyclic ligand $[Ni(D)]^{2+},\;[Cu(D)]^{2+},\;and\;[Cu(D)Cl]^+$, where D is 1,3,6,9,12-pentaazabicyclo[10,2,l]pentadecane, have been prepared by the template condensation reaction of tetraethylenepentamine and formaldehyde in the presence of the metal ion. The complexes contain one imidazolidine ring in the macrobicyclic ligand, D. The complexes $[Ni(D)]^{2+}\;and\;[Cu(D)]^{2+}$ have square planar geometry with 5-5-5-6 chelate ring sequence. The electronic spectra of $[Cu(D)Cl]^+$indicate that the complex has square pyramidal geometry. Synthesis, charactrization, and the spectroscopic and chemical properties of the macrobicyclic nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes are described.

  • A study on the separation of heavy metals such as iron, copper, zinc and nickel from electroplating waste water has been investigated. The results showed that the PC-88A was more effective extractant for the extraction of zinc and the efficiency of zinc was to be about 100% at pH 2.5. And copper and nickel were extracted about 100% at pH 2 and more than 90% at pH 4~5 with LIX 84, respectively. On the other hand, in the case of solvent extraction of electroplating waste water(Acid-Alkali type) containing heavy metals, the ferric ion was first extracted at pH 2∼2.5 with 20% Naphthenic acid or 10% Versatic acid-10. And then, copper and zinc were extracted at pH 2 with 3% LIX 84 and at pH 2.5∼3 with 20% PC-88A respectively, remaining nickel in the raffinate. In this manner, the heavy metals in electroplating waste water could be effectively separated with solvent extraction method.
