  • Purpose: To evaluate the blue-light blocking ratio and luminous transmittance of blue-light blocking lenses using the blue-light hazard function as specified in international standard. Methods: In order to calculate the blue-light blocking ratio and luminous transmittance for a total of 41 blue-light blocking lenses from 8 manufacturers, UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used for measuring the spectral transmittance of wavelengths from 380 to 780 nm. Blue-light blocking ratio was calculated using blue-light hazard function as specified in ANSI Z80.3:2010 and ISO 13666(or Korean Standard KS B ISO 13666:2004). Results: The range of the blue-light blocking ratio was from 9.3 to 96.8%, the range of the transmittance from 53.5 to 92.7%, and the range of the luminous transmittance from 58.0% to 98.1%. In general the blue-light blocking lens prepared by coating tended to have a higher luminous transmittance, while those prepared by tinting a higher blue-light blocking ratio. Conclusions: The behavior of the spectral distribution of lenses showed the possibility of the performance improvement in the blue-light blocking lenses. Manufactures need to acquire their own technology that can evaluate the performance of blue-light blocking lens based in international standard.

  • We tested fruits quality and skin coloration of two pear cultivar 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan' produced by bagging with different kinds of paper bags in the Cheonan area, Chungnam Province, Korea. The fruits were bagged at 35, 45, 55 or 65 days after full bloom (DAFB) with 3 kinds of double layer paper bag which consisted of grey color, yellow color and newspaper for outer layer. The great extent of light interruption was observed in grey colored outer paperbag among three kinds of paperbag which showed only 0.46% of lowest light transmittance when compared with 43.7% and 40.0% of yellow paper and newspaper, respectively. The development of skin redness ($a^*$) increased with the delay of bagging time in two pear cultivars. But the fruits treated at 65 DAFB showed uneven coloration and excessive development of redness which represented low fruit external appearance value. Uniform flesh firmness was attained at the fruits bagged with grey outer color paperbag regardless of bagging time, although the fruit quality indices including soluble solids and titratable acidity did not change significantly by using different kind of fruit bags and bagging time in two pear cultivar. Based on our results, it was explained that the grey-colored fruit bag had positive effect on the development of skin coloration without any detrimental effect on fruit quality factors in 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan' pears.

  • The fog screen is a device projecting the media to the aerosol flow field. As major parameters to generate dense and steady fog screen, shear stress, optical blockage ratio and SMD were obtained result through experiment. The micro droplet was generated by the piezo oscillation element, and the aerosol flow mixed with an air flow was sprayed into the vertical direction from the top of the fog screen through the 280 mm slot. For produce a dense, uniform fog screen, the shear effect, optical blockage ratio and SMD between aerosol and air curtain were measured. The minimum and maximum shear stress conditions were selected and it was confirmed that the optical transmission deviation of the aerosol flow field was small when the aerosol and air curtain flow rates were changed. When the aerosol and air curtain flow power were 18 V (1.51 m/s) and 24 V (2.55 m/s), respectively, under the condition of the minimum shear stress and laminar flow, the optical blockage ratios with the spray length were small, and it produced a most stable and high density uniform fog screen by injecting a constant of $10{\mu}m$ or less.

  • A fabrication process of smart windows with controllable visible light transmittance by using retardation films is proposed. The 𝛌/4-phase retardation films that can convert a linearly polarized light into circularly polarized light are achieved through photo-alignment layers and reactive mesogen (RM) coating process. Two sheets of the fabricated retardation films with different orientation angles induced to light transmission mode (45°/-45°) and light blocking mode (45°/45°) for visible wavelength. We evaluated retardation characteristics according to the thickness of the birefringent RM material and found out the optimal condition for the film with 𝚫n·d of 𝛌/4-phase. The proposed structure of the smart window exhibited the light blocking ratio improved by more than 20% in the visible wavelength (380 nm to 780 nm). Finally, it was confirmed that the feasibility of the window structure by applying to a prototype for a smart window with a size of 150 × 150 mm2.
