PMMA가 코팅된 주름 구조를 갖는 다공성규소 격판을 이용한 광섬유 압력센서 (Fiber-Optic Pressure Sensor Using a Rugate-Structured Porous Silicon Diaphragm Coated with PMMA)

  • In this research, fiber-optic pressure sensors were fabricated with rugate-structured porous silicon (RPS) diaphragms coated with PMMA (Polymethyl-Methacrylate). The reflectance spectrum of the PMMA/RPS diaphragm was almost the same as that of uncoated RPS diaphragm. However the mechanical strength of the PMMA/RPS diaphragm increased more than that of the uncoated diaphragm. As a result, the fiber-optic sensor fabricated with PMMA/RPS diaphragm could successfully detect more high pressure difference without diaphragm damage than the highest detectable pressure difference of the sensor with normal RPS diaphragm. The response data of the fiber-optic sensor recorded as a function of pressure difference were fitted by theoretical curves. During this process, elastic moduli of the used PMMA/RPS diaphragms were obtained numerically. The dynamic response properties of the fiber-optic sensor were also investigated under continuous variation of the pressure difference conditions.

  • In this paper, a study on a portable hydrogen alarm system based on the palladium coated single mode fiber sensor has been reported. The fabricated hydrogen sensor exhibited 0.14 dB, 0.41 dB and 0.54 dB optical intensity variation when it was exposed by the nitrogen and hydrogen mixed gas containing 0.5 %, 1 % and 4 % of the hydrogen concentration, respectively. The fabricated sensor exhibited 20 second of response time and 120 second of recovery time for 4 % hydrogen containing gas. The fiber optics layout and software algorithm for detection of hydrogen leakage have been presented. The implanted portable hydrogen alarm system successfully generated an alarm signal when a 4 % hydrogen containing gas was leaked out.

  • 고휘도 다이오드(Superluminescent Diodes : SLD)는 fiber gyroscope의 광원으로서 가장 적당한 소자로 알려져 있다$^{(1)}$ . 본 연구는 실제의 광섬유 자이로 스코프에 적용하기 위하여 활성층의 발진파장이 1.55$mu extrm{m}$인 SLD의 제작을 목적으로 하고 있다.   • In this study plastic optical fibers(POFs) were considered as light-transmitting media and substrates for the potential use in photocatalytic environmental purification system. After the characteristics of POFs in terms of light transmittance and absorption were determined at the beginning, the detailed investigation was further performed through the photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene(TCE), iso-propanol and etc. with TiO$_2$-coated optical fiber reactor systems(POFR). It is concluded that the use of POfs is preferred to quartz optical fibers(QOFs) since the advantages such as ease of handling, lower cost, relatively reasonable light attenuation at the wavelength of near 400nm can be obtained. Various geometrical reactor shapes have been constructed and applied for the last one and half years. For the use of POF in water phase treatment, however, more detailed scientific and engineering aspects should be envisaged. This case requires a suitable mixture to obtain more stable and innocuous immobilization of photocatalyst on POF.

  • We have investigated a fiber-optic sensor for detecting the hydrogen gas dissolved in insulation oil based on a palladium (Pd)-coated fiber Bragg grating (FBG). As the palladium absorbs the hydrogen gas dissolved in the insulation oil, its volume expands and the Bragg wavelength shifts to a longer wavelength. The experimental results showed that the Bragg wavelength of FBG increased to 70 nm when the concentration of hydrogen dissolved in the insulation oil was 409 ppm.

  • We have proposed a hydrogen detection sensor based on a Pd (palladium)-coated, single-mode, optical fiber. The experimental results demonstrated that the sensor could detect hydrogen in air as well as in insulation oil. The influence of Pd film thickness and environmental temperature on response time and sensitivity was analyzed. The reflected optical power at the optical-fiber/Pd interface decreased as the concentration of hydrogen increased, in both air and the insulation oil. The sensor showed 0.75 dB of optical power variation when the concentration of dissolved hydrogen was saturated in the insulation oil.

  • 최근 모드변환기가 집적된 진행파형 반도체 광증폭기(SSC-TW-SOA)가 광섬유와의 광결합 효율 향상 및 저가격화를 위해 활발히 연구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 모드변환기의 구조가 단면 반사율에 미치는 영향을 실험 및 이론적으로 조사하였다. SSC-TW-SOA의 유효단면반사율을 낮추기 위해서는 수직 및 수평방향으로 충분히 모드변환을 행하고 동시에 기운단면 구조를 채용하는 것이 매우 효과적임을 이론적 및 실험적으로 확인하였다. 수직 및 수평방향의 모드변환기가 집적된 TW-SOA에 $20\mu\textrm{m}$ 길이의 창구조, $7^{\circ}$기운단면, 1% 무반사 코팅을 도입함으로써 0.1dB 이하의 작은 ASE ripple를 얻을 수 있었다.

  • The present investigation on optical fiber mass manufacturing features the computational modeling and simulation on a double layer liquid coating process on glass fiber surface. The computational model employs a simplified geometry of typical fiber coating system which consists of primary and secondary coating dies along with secondary coating cup. The viscous dissipation in coating flow is incorporated into the double layer coating process simulations. Heavy temperature dependence of coating liquid viscosity is also considered in the model. The computational results found that the effects of viscous dissipation on both primary and secondary coating layer thicknesses are highly significant at higher drawing speed. Several important coating process parameters such as supply temperature and pressure of primary and secondary coating liquids are investigated and discussed in order to appreciate how those parameters affect the double layer coating layer thickness on fast moving glass fiber.

  • We have proposed and demonstrated a fiber optic RH (relative humidity) sensor based on fiber Bragg grating covered with a polyimide film. As the polyimide film absolves the moisture in the air, its volume expands. As a result, the grating period of the FBG (fiber Bragg grating) covered with a polyimide film becomes wide and the Bragg wavelength is shifted. The sensor is implemented by fixing a 30 ㎛ thickness polyimide film on the surface of an optical fiber grating using an adhesive, and the characteristics of the device according to humidity are analyzed. The fabricated FBG RH sensor showed a high sensitivity of 0.0186 nm/RH% and a wide measurement range from 30% to 90%. The influence of environmental temperature on the characteristics of the RH sensor was also measured and analyzed. The feasibility of commercialization is presented.
