Strain Transmission Ratio of a Distributed Optical Fiber Sensor with a Coating Layer (코팅된 분포형 광섬유 센서의 변형률 전달률)

  • We investigate strain transmissions of a surface bonded distributed optical fiber sensor considering strain variation according to positions. We first derive a strain transmission ratio depending on a wavelength of a strain distribution of the host structure from an analysis model. The strain transmission ratio is compared with numerical results obtained from the finite element method using ABAQUS. We find that the analytical results agree well with the numerical results. The strain transmission ratio is a function of a wavelength, i.e. the strain transmission ratio decreases (increases) as the wavelength of the host strain decreases (increases). Therefore, if an arbitrary strain distribution containing various wavelengths is given to a host structure, a distorted strain distribution will be observed in the distributed optical fiber sensor compare to that of the host structure, because each wavelength shows different strain transmission ratio. The strain transmission ratio derived in this study will be useful for accurately identifying the host strain distribution based on the signal of a distributed optical fiber sensor.

  • It is known that recoating or protection with glass-tube can prevent FBG sensor from being affected by birefringence. However, the effect on the strain transfer of such treatment has not been verified yet. Three types (uncoated, recoated and glass-tube protection) of FBG sensors are fabricated to verify the effect on the strain transfer of each treatment. The strain from each sensor embedded into a graphite/epoxy composite specimen was compared with that of ESG attached on the surface through the tensile test. And the signal characteristics of each sensor were also compared using the tensile test of a tapered aluminum specimen which was under the state of strain gradient.

Gelatin Film Coated Fiber-Optic Directional Coupler-Based Humidity Sensors (젤라틴 코팅을 이용한 광섬유형 방향성 결합기 기반 습도 센서)

  • In this paper, a gelatin layer was formed on the surface of the twisted fiber-optic couplers fabricated by hydrofluoric acid, which can be used to measure relative humidity. The proposed method of sensors has advantage of low cost compared with the sensors based on the conventional electronic devices and takes beneficial characteristics of optical fibers and light. The fiber-optic sensors presented in this study show a measurement from about 40% to 85% relative humidity, and the experimental results agree well with the calculated results. Based on the design presented in this paper, the structure will enable promising applications in the detecting humidity and various hazardous gases.

  • An optical fiber short period grating of 0.7 nm as a 3 dB wavelength linewidth was fabricated using a Gaussian distributed KrF Eximer laser and a phase mask. This grating has temperature dependancy of 0.01 nm/$^{\circ}C$ over the range of -10 $^{\circ}C$ ~ 70 $^{\circ}C$and no difference between temperature directions. An optical fiber long period grating of 14.22 nm as a 3 dB linewidth was also fabricated using a amplitude mask and has dependancy of 0.01 nm/$^{\circ}C$ over the same range.

Luminescence effects of POF-based Flexible Textile by post-treated Optic illuminate (측광 후처리 가공에 의한 유연 광직물의 발광 효과)

  • The plastic optical fiber has been previously known to have the limits in fabrication and care, due to its lack of flexibility and durability. Recently, an innovative technology of 'water-resistant & flexible optical fiber', in which the surface of etched POF(i.e., plastic optical fiber) is to be coated with a type of synthetic resin, has been developed. In this study, the post-treated POF-based flexible textiles were evaluated in terms of luminance, physical visibility and perceived visibility, according to the fabric lengths and colors of the light source. The POF-based flexible textile with 10cm fabric length and green light source appeared to show relatively higher illuminating effects. The maximum distance for perceived visibility of the POF-based flexible textiles was found to be 100m. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to be utilized as a fundamental for the further studies to develop the digital color clothing with application of POF-based flexible textile.

  • 근접장 광학 탐침은 근접장 광학 현미경의 핵심요소이다. 매우 다양한 탐침이 제작되어 사용되고 있지만 이 가운데에서 실제로 널리 사용되는 근접장 탐침은 잡아끌거나 식각하는 방식으로 첨단부를 뽀족하게 한 후 수십 내지 수백 나노미터 직경의 개구 만을 남겨두고 금속 코팅한 광섬유 탐침이다. 그러나 광섬유 근접장 탐침은 잘 알려져 있는 몇가지 단점이 있다. 우선 20~30$^{\circ}$ 의 각도로 뽀족해지는 기하학적인 모양과, 깨지기 쉬운 유리 재질로 제작된 데 기인하여 내구성이 떨어진다. (중략)

  • 근접장 광학 현미경에 사용되는 다양한 탐침 중 가장 널리 사용되는 근접장 탐침은 잡아끌거나 식각하는 방식으로 첨단부를 뽀족하게 한 후 수십 내지 수백 나노미터 직경의 개구 만을 남겨두고 금속 코팅한 광섬유 탐침이다. 하지만 이렇게 제작되는 광섬유 탐침에는 뽀족한 기하학적인 모양과 깨지기 쉬운 재질 특성으로 인하여 내구성이 떨어지고 작은 개구 각도로 인하여 광 전달율이 매우낮으며 탐침을 근접장 영역에 진입시킨 후 시료와 탐침 간의 거리를 유지시키기 위해서 매우 복잡한 거리 유지 장치가 필요하다는 단점들이 있다. (중략)

Residual Strain Characteristics of Nickel-coated FBG Sensors (니켈이 코팅된 FBG 센서의 잔류 변형률 특성)

  • A metal-coated FBG (fiber Bragg grating) sensor has a memory effect, which can recall the maximum strains experienced by the structure. In this study, a nickel-coated FBG sensor was fabricated through electroless (i.e., chemical plating) and electroplating. A thickness of approximately $43{\mu}m$ of a nickel layer was achieved. Then, we conducted cyclic loading tests for the fabricated nickel-coated FBG sensors to verify their capability to produce residual strains. The results revealed that the residual strain induced by the nickel coating linearly increased with an increase in the maximum strain experienced by the sensor. Therefore, we verified that a nickel-coated FBG sensor has a memory effect. The fabrication methods and the results of the cycle loading test will provide basic information and guidelines in the design of a nickel-coated FBG sensor when it is applied in the development of structural health monitoring techniques.
