Seismic station of high noise level has difficulties detecting relatively weak ground motions due to small earthquakes or teleseismic events because earthquake detectability of seismic station depends on seismic noise level. To figure out the capability of earthquake detection of a seismic network, therefore, seismic noise level of each station also needs to be considered, including the distribution of seismic stations. Recently, it has been known that most of broadband seismic stations in South Korea have affected by cultural noise in the frequencies higher than 1 Hz and show diurnal variations of noise level. In order to analyze the effect of diurnal variation of seismic noise level on earthquake detectability, we used the result of background seismic noise level analysis of seismograms of 30 broadband stations of KIGAM and KMA from 2005 to 2007. This study shows that earthquakes greater than magnitude 2.4 occurring within the Korean Peninsula can be detected at night while those greater than magnitude 2.6 can be detected in the daytime.

In this paper, we will discuss about correction method of missing data on noisy observation matrix and uncertainty analysis for the potential noise. In situations without missing data in an observation matrix, this solution is known to be accurately induced by SVD (Singular Value Decomposition). However, usually the several entries of observation matrix have not been observed and other entries have been perturbed by the influence of noise. In this case, it is difficult to find the solution as well as cause the 3D reconstruction error. Therefore, in order to minimize the 3D reconstruction error, above all things, it is necessary to correct reliably the missing data under noise distribution and to give a quantitative evaluation for the corrected results. This paper focuses on a method for correcting missing data using geometrical properties between 2D projected object and 3D reconstructed shape and for estimating a noise level of the observation matrix using ranks of SVD in order to quantitatively evaluate the performance of the correction algorithm.

The horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) analysis is conducted to estimate the site amplification effect and the thickness of the sedimentary layer beneath the measurement site. We investigated the effects of meteorological variations (wind and precipitation rate) and sensor burial depths on HVSR analysis. The HVSR results were unstable when seismographs were exposed on the ground. The HVSR results of ambient noise data measured under strong winds were also unstable. It is recommended to measure the ambient noise at wind speeds of <3 m s-1. Stable HVSR results were obtained when seismographs were buried, regardless of the precipitation rates. The results of this study provide the best observations and optimal weather conditions required to acquire accurate and reliable HVSR results.

Test statistics are obtained for detection of weak signals in signal-dependent noise using rank statistics. A generalized model is used in this paper in order to consider non-additivenoise as well as purely-additive noise. Locally optimum rank detectors for the model are shown to have similarity to locally optimum detectors and to be generalizations of these for the purely-additive noise model. A similar result is obtained for multi-input cases.
We installed temporary strong motion seismometers at the ground surface, 1 m, 2 m, and 9 m at an existing seismic station that houses permanent seismometers installed at 20 m and 100 m, to investigate the influence of installation depth on the recorded ambient and anthropogenic noise level and the characteristics of earthquake signals. Analysis of the ambient noise shows that anthropogenic noise dominates where vibration period T < 1 s at the studied site, whereas wind speed appears to be strongly correlated with the noise level at T > 1 s. Frequency-wavenumber analysis of 2D seismometer array suggests that ambient noise in short periods are predominantly body waves, rather than surface waves. The level of ambient noise was low at 9 m and 20 m, but strong amplification of noise level at T < 0.1 s was observed at the shallow seismometers. Both the active-source test result and the recorded earthquake data demonstrated that the signal level is decreased with the increase of depth. Our result also shows that recorded motions at the ground and 1 m are strongly amplified at 20 Hz (T = 0.05 s), likely due to the resonance of the 3 m thick soil layer. This study demonstrates that analysis of ambient and active-source vibration may help find optimal installation depth of strong motion seismometers. We expect that further research considering various noise environments and geological conditions will be helpful in establishing a guideline for optimal installation of strong motion seismometers.
Orientation corrections for the total of 268 accelerograph stations of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) were estimated using ambient noise cross-correlation. As this method uses ambient noise data instead of teleseismic waveforms from earthquakes under certain conditions, reliable orientation corrections can be obtained using only two-month long continuous seismic data from dense seismic networks in the Korean peninsula.Three-component continuous data recorded at the 268 accelerograph stations from January to February 2020 were used to estimate orientation corrections. The results are comparable to the previous results obtained from teleseismic waveforms; the overall standard deviations of the orientation corrections are less than 5°. Therefore, orientation corrections for the accelerograph station network can be tracked periodically by the ambient-noise method and the result can be used in various studies using the horizontal-component of acceleration data.

A simpler nonparametric detector test statistic based on reference observation in addition to the rank statistics of regular observations is suggested in this letter. Using reference observations instead of sign statistics helps us a simpler detector structure especially for random signals buried in multiplicative noise.
Since design response spectrum does not reflect local soil characteristics, site specific response spectrum of observed ground motions appears relatively higher than design response spectrum at high frequency range. These problems have been pointed out from the domestic seismic design industry. Among various estimation methods, this study used the method H/V ratio of ground motion for estimating site amplification. This method has been extended to background noise, Coda waves and S waves recently for estimating site amplification. This study applied this method to the background noise and Coda wave energy. This study analysed more than 267 background noises from 15 macro earthquakes including main Fukuoka earthquake (2005/03/20, M=6.5) and then compared to results from S waves, at 8 main domestic seismic stations. The results showed that most of the domestic seismic stations gave similar results to those from S waves. Each station showed its own characteristics of site amplification property in low, high and specific resonance frequency ranges. Comparison of this study to other studies using different method can give us much information about dynamic amplification of domestic sites characteristics and site classification.
To look into site characteristics of the Hwacheon borehole seismic station, we analyzed property of earthquake and microtremor recorded on surface and borehole seismometers. Acoording to analysis result of microtremor, the surface-to-borehole energy ratio was approximately 15 times greater during the daytime than during the nighttime, and the surface-to-borehole ratios of spectral amplitudes as frequency increases. For earthquake data, amplitude spectra and dominant frequency were computed using surface and borehole data. As a result, small earthquakes with short distance recorded on surface seismometer peaked at 8 Hz, 46 Hz. This result corresponds to resonance frequencies (7.4 Hz, 46 Hz) calculated by H/V spectral ratio. We confirmed amplification effect by site characteristics of overburden. Background noise level was approximately 20,000 times smaller at borehole seismic station than surface seismic station. These results provide strong evidence for the superior recording of earthquakes using borehole seismometers instead of surface seismometers.
A problem of separating signals from noises is considered, when they are randomly mixed in the observation. It is assumed that the noise follows a Gaussian distribution and the signal follows a Gamma distribution, thus the underlying distribution of an observation will be a mixture of Gaussian and Gamma distributions. The parameters of the mixture model will be estimated from the EM algorithm. Then the signals and noises will be classified by a fixed threshold approach based on multiple testing using positive false discovery rate and Bayes error. The proposed method is applied to a real optical emission spectroscopy data for the quantitative analysis of inclusions. A simulation is carried out to compare the performance with the existing method using 3 sigma rule.
