  • This research was conducted to investigate the effects under which learner-generated pictorial representation introduced in summary stage of lesson serve as an instructional strategy improving academic achievement and scientific attitude. The subjects of this study were 152 students (experimental group: 38 boys and 39 girls, control group: 36 boys and 39 girls). Using the learner-generated pictorial representation were applied to experimental group, whereas summarizing the lesson in writing to control group. The results of this study were as follows: First, there was no significant difference between the two groups in the post achievement results. But, a statistically significant difference on a delayed post-test of academic achievement was found between experimental and control groups. Second, there was no significant difference between boys and girls in the post achievement test. But a significantly positive effects on the academic achievement was found in boys of experimental group. Third, experimental group scored higher than the control group in all sub-domains of the scientific attitude; curiosity, openness, criticism, cooperativity, willingness, perseverance. Findings suggest the descriptive drawing is a viable way for elementary students to understand scientific concepts and to improve scientific attitude.

  • Students experience a variety of achievement-related emotions during the process of learning the science curriculum. The purpose of this study is to develop an achievement emotions questionnaire for Korean middle school science curriculum to measure the achievement emotions that middle school students experience during study of this curriculum, and verified its validity. The Achievement Emotions Questionnaire-Korean Middle School Science is based on the English version of the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire, developed with reference to Korean middle school science curriculum and the characteristics of science study, from the perspective of the control-value theory of achievement. It has 232 questions, configured to measure nine achievement emotions across three types of academic settings. The questionnaire results can be treated with a high degree of confidence according to the result of our validation, which also verified that the achievement emotions of these students are configured with four internal criteria (learning strategy, achievement motivation and course grade), as suggested by the control-value theory; this in turn verifies that the nine achievement emotions are sufficiently distinctive across study situations. Last, it was verified that the questionnaire has sufficient external validity based on a comprehensive examination of the relation between science achievement emotions and the four criterion variables for each student. This suggests that through the development and implementation of this quantitative questionnaire, basic ground was provided to understand the achievement emotions experienced by middle school students learning the science curriculum.

  • The purpose of the study was to produce resources to help develop instructional methods and programs for school science to reduce gender differences in science achievement by analyzing TIMSS-R results according to item type, benchmark, and content category. Korean male students performed higher than Korean female students and gender differences of Korean students were higher than international means in all item types including multiple-choice, short answer, and extended response type. GDI(Gender Difference Index) of Korean students was lower than international mean in top 10% benchmark but higher than international means in other benchmarks. Korean male students also exhibited higher performance than Korean female students in all content categories except scientific inquiry and the nature of science category. Regarding items that GDIs were higher than 10, the number of items belonged to life science and earth science category was relatively larger and a high percentage of them was not included in school science curriculum. In addition, the items were equally distributed in each performance category. In sum, the study showed various gender differences according to item type, benchmark, and content category. The results could be used to find appropriate instructional methods to reduce gender differences in science achievement.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of teaching presence on academic achievement and learning satisfaction in the university online tutoring learning environment, and to find teaching methods for students' adaption of college life and their reinforcement of learning capabilities. In the study, the relationship between teaching presence, academic achievement and learning satisfaction were analyzed for those who participants in the tutoring program of the Busan D School OO Research Center during the first semester of 2021. As a result of the study, the relationship between teaching presence, academic achievement and learning satisfaction was indicated high correlation in the order of learning management, participation management and content structure of learning activities; the effect of teaching presence on academic achievement and learning satisfaction was found a significant effect in learning management, which is a sub-area of the tutees' learning activities. These results therefore suggest the direction of the operation process and method reflecting teaching presence, and provide an in-depth discussion on the learning management method that can improve the quality of the learner's learning experience in the learning environment.

  • In line with the entry into the digital-based intelligent information society, the science curriculum emphasizes the cultivation of scientific competencies, and computer-based test (CBT) is drawing attention for assessment of competencies. CBT has advantages to develop items that have high fidelity, and to establish a feedback system by accumulating results into the database. However, it is necessary to solve the problems of improving validity of assessment results, lowering measurement efficiency, and increasing management factors. To examine students' responses to the introduction of the new assessment tools in the process of transitioning from paper-based test (PBT) to CBT, in this study, we analyzed the results of the PBT and the CBT conducted in 2021 National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA). In particular, we sought to find the effects on student achievement when only the mode of assessment was changed without change of items, and the effect on student achievement when the items were composed including technology enhanced features that take advantage of CBT. This study is derived through the analysis of the results of 7,137 third-grade middle school students taking one among the three kinds of assessments, which were the PBT or two kinds of CBT. After the assessment, the percentage of correct answers and the item discriminations were collected for each group, and expert opinions on characteristics of response were collected through the expert council involving 8 science teachers with experience in NAEA. According to the results, there was no significant difference between students' achievement results in the PBT and the CBT-M, which means simple mode conversion type of CBT, so it could be explained that the mode effect did not appear. However, it was confirmed that the percentage of correct answers for the construct response items was somewhat high in the CBT, and this result was analyzed to be related to the convenience of the response. On the other hand, there were the items with a difference of more than 10%p from the correct answer rate of similar items, among the items to which technology enhanced functions were applied following the introduction of CBT. According to the analysis of response rate of options, these results could be explained that the students' level of understanding could be more closely grasped through the innovative items developed through the technology enhanced function. Based on the results, we discussed some guidance to be considered when introducing CBT and developing items through CBT, and presented implications.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning achievement of students who has taken the play-based and activity-oriented programs in the class. These new science class programs and instrument to measure student learning achievement were developed for the "Constellation Favorite" lesson of 4th grade students and Those are verified by science education experts, teachers in serve. The subjects of this study consist of 121 students in four classes who were selected on the basis of midterm examination result before teaching treatment. They were divided into two categories with two classes per each category, one class for experimental group and the other class for control group. The experimental groups were given five classes including five play-based class programs. The control groups were given five conventional instruction-type classes. The students were given questionnaires to test their interest ratings. The results show about 17% increase of their learning achievement with (p<0.005) by independent sample T-test method and 40% increase of interest rating in play-based class sample compared to normal class sample. In conclusion, the play-based science class program is found to enhance the students' learning achievement and to interest the students more effectively.

  • The purpose of the research is examine the effect of STEM integration education using educatinal robot on academic achievement and subject Attitude of mathematics and science. The participants were 73 students of two classes, sampled from 6th graders of an elementary school. They were divided into a control group who learned a traditional mathematics and sciences education based textbooks and an experimental group who learned STEM integration education using educational robot during 12 sessions. The results are summarized as follows : First, there is a significant difference in academic achievement between two groups. STEM integration education using educational robot based group accomplished higher achievement than textbook based instruction group. Especially, post test analyzes results on the three factors of academic achievement, knowledge, understanding and adaptation, indicate statistically meaningful difference between two groups in understanding and adaptation area except knowledge area. Second, it shows that it greatly affected a positive influence on experimental group's attitude toward subjects in affective area. So we can expect STEM integration education using educational robot to be an alternative for stimulating children's higher learning interest on mathematics and science subject.
