  • Let us critique the common notion that ethical examination retards the development of science and technology. First, I shall reformulate such a notion in the following statements: 'To survive the competitive society, we must develop science and technology before others do. It will cost too much time to examine ethically the influence of developing science and technology. Therefore, we cannot but suspend the ethical matters until we have developed science and technology.' I will then show that even if we reconstruct the above argument in a deductively valid form, the second premise is not necessarily true and that we cannot accept the conclusion because the meaning of 'competing for better lives', in the first premise, is diverse. Especially if we are to take into account all the areas of ethics and base them upon the autonomous ethics of democratic societies, it cannot be concluded that ethics is an enemy of developing science and technology. In addition, I will argue that our moral considerations must be based upon autonomous ethics in order to make the development of science and technology contribute to enhancing the desirable science culture. In the midst of making the above argument, it is proposed that the title of the 1aw of bio-ethics be changed, for it has a mistaken implication that acting against ethics results in legal punishments.

  • To apply "ethics of care" into science education, this study summarized previous studies of care, ethics of care, and caring education. Through a wide range of literature review, we proposed science learning model with ethics of care. This model has steps of 'being in a context of issue, perception of issue-related value, choosing value with ethics of care, feeling empathy to caring subject, experiencing care, and verifying the effectiveness of caring, which are reflected characteristics of ethics of care, contextual, connected, and practical. It is expected that students will be able to solve science-related issues while keeping in mind consideration for nature as a caring subject.

  • We investigated gifted students' scientific integrity, perception of scientific misconduct and needs for research ethics education. For this study, 267 science academy students who have participated in R&E program responded to questionnaire of those three parts. The major findings are as follows: First, 45.31% of gifted students answered that they had one or more experiences in five categories; fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, unfair authorship, and connivance of scientific misconduct. Second, almost 90% of gifted students responded that statements of questions are scientific misconduct except the self plagiarism. Third, 28.83% of gifted students needed to study research ethics and all of them were 1st graders. Fourth, they wanted to know specifically the limit of apt citation, writing skills of research notes, specific examples of scientific misconduct, and concrete acting method for scientific integrity, etc. In order to get gifted students to conduct their research responsibly, educators have to consider and reflect the voice of gifted students.

  • This paper investigates conditions, issues, and themes in the social responsibility of scientists and engineers by the examination of various materials in science and technology studies(STS). Firstly, the institutionalization of science and technology in society works as a objective conditions for the responsibility of scientists and engineers. Secondly, discussion on scientists and engineers as professionals should be complemented by focusing on the public character of science and technology. Thirdly, various social relevant groups should be comprehensively considered in the ethical conflicts of scientists and engineers. Finally, this paper suggests some themes in science and engineering ethics to strengthen the social responsibility of scientists and engineers.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of teaching science ethical issues relevant to the middle school science curriculum. The experimental subjects were 132 second grade middle school students in Seoul, who were divided into two groups without any statistical differences. The results of this study indicated that teaching ethical issues in science had a positive influence on students' attitudes toward science and fostered a positive impression of science education. Also, the students showed a positive attitude in dealing with ethical problems in science and technology. Regardless, the results of this study suggest that ethical education in science classes is effective in increasing positive attitude toward science and the ability of the students in addressing and resolving ethical problems in science and technology. As such, we strongly recommend that the science curriculum for middle school students be changed to integrate ethical issues in the science class.

  • Many kinds of teaching methods have been used to instruct ethical issues that arise in the field of science and technology. However, few teaching methods of bioethics have been validated by ethical theories, or justified based on practical utility in bioethics teaching. The aim of this article is to suggest teaching methods of bioethics that are appropriate for ethical theories and socio-scientific issues related to biological sciences in secondary schools. In the article, the teaching methods are classified into three types of ethical theories and into three types of socio-scientific issues in biological sciences. The characteristics of nine teaching/learning methods are then described in terms of appropriate bioethical issues or contexts, and ethical theories or principles.

  • This article explores some of the ethical issues associated with the fourth industrial revolution and suggests new directions for bioethics education in Korean universities. Some countries have recently developed guidelines and regulations based on the legal and ethical considerations of the benefits and social risks of new technologies associated with the fourth industrial revolution. Foreign universities have also created courses (both classroom and online) that deal with these issues and help to ensure that these new technologies are developed in an ethically appropriate fashion. In South Korea too there have been attempts to enhance bioethics education to meet the changing demands of society. However, bioethics education in Korea remains focused on traditional bioethical topics and largely neglects the ethical issues related to emerging technologies. Furthermore, Korean universities offer no online courses in bioethics and the classroom courses that do exist are generally treated as electives. In order to improve bioethics education in Korean universities, we suggest that (a) new course should be developed for interprofessional education; (b) courses in bioethics should be treated as required subjects gradually; (c) online courses should be prepared, and (d) universities should continually revise course contents in response to the development of new technologies.
