  • The effects of learning using Information Communication Technology(ICT) on the students' scientific inquiry ability and science-related affective characteristics were analyzed in Earth History and Crust Movement units of science textbook for eighth graders. For this study, two classes of middle school second students in Chung-nam were selected and taught for six week under different teaching methods. One class is the test class taught with ICT applied teaching materials and the other class is the control class instructed by a conventional method. One week before the experiment, both classes were given tests on scientific inquiry ability and science-related affective characteristics, and they were tested again after the experiment. The results of scientific inquiry test showed statistically meaningful differences in the experimental class and the control class. The experimental class showed statistically meaningful difference in scientific inquiry test. Science-related affective characteristics test showed no statistically meaningful difference in the experimental class. Among three scientific science-related affective characteristics, especially the one fields of interests showed statistically meaningful differences which suggest that learning using ICT has a positive effect on the expanding of students' science-related affective characteristics.

  • In this study, the test that were used in entrance examination for chemistry class in a Science-Gifted Education Center for middle school students were analyzed by using criteria for identification and measurement of scientific giftedness and a classical test theory. The result of analysis exhibited that most of problems measured more than two elements of scientific giftedness and required applications of scientific knowledge of middle school level to solve problems. In the analysis of sub-elements of scientific giftedness, originality, fluency in creativity and finding problems/formulating hypothesis, planning inquiry, interpreting data in science process skills were dominant while drawing conclusion and generalization processes were lacking. In correlation analysis between total score and each type of problems, total score was most influenced by the problems measuring science inquiry linked with scientific knowledge. Item difficulty is moderately high and item discrimination is moderate.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of paper-pencil tests for exploring its appropriateness as a selection tool of the gifted in science. For this purpose, we developed two (internal and external) item analysis frameworks, and applied these frameworks to analyse qualitative characteristics. Also, we analysed the relationship between two characteristics. The results of analysing qualitative characteristics revealed that the portion of items with acceleration context exceeding middle school curriculum level was relatively large, which caused low content validity. Furthermore, there was considerable deviation in content and context by subject matter and year, which caused test unstability. Items measuring knowledge domain was the most prevalent, and too much weight on data interpretation & analysis domain in inquiry process skills. In case of creativity test, the portion of items measuring convergent thinking was much larger than that of divergent or associative thinking. Most of these items were represented by using pictures and tables rather than using graphs. Item types of multiple-choice and short answers were superior to essay types. Discrimination index, on the whole, was appropriate (above 0.3), but item difficulty showed a vast deviation ($0.01{\sim}0.90$). Correlation coefficients among subject matters and test tools were very low, and test reliabilities were also low. Low item difficulty & high discrimination index item types were distinguishable. Items with acceleration context were more discriminating than enrichment context. Implications of developing quality paper-pencil test items in the selection of gifted students are discussed.

  • The knowledge and information processing competence is one of the essential competencies in an information-oriented society which is highly related to science education. The purpose of this study is to investigate middle school students' difficulties in science inquiry activity in view of the knowledge and information processing competence. Collection, processing, and application of information are extracted as common elements of the knowledge and information processing competence through literature search. Data were obtained from eight students of a middle school in Seoul for five months and were analyzed based on constant comparative method to extract students' difficulties. As a result, the element of information collection is observed through science inquiry and the element of information processing is observed in hypothesis setting step, inquiry result analysis step, and inquiry result sharing step. The element of information application is observed in the creation of posters for sharing and inquiry reports. Difficulties in information collection were found in lack of confidence in information gathering, systematic search strategy, and information reliability. Difficulties in information processing appeared in the inexperience of analysis program use, information transformation, and interpretation of linkage information. Difficulties in information application were caused by the lack of effective organization and effective expression of information. In this study, it is meaningful to provide a clue as to how the knowledge and information processing competence can be established in science education.

  • To present the suggestions for improvement in science textbooks of high school, scientific inquiry activities in geology of earth science textbooks of Korea and the U.S. were assessed in the areas of the contents, processes and contexts. Regarding the contents of inquiry activities, Korean textbooks contain more number of inquiry activities (5.8 per section) than the U.S. curriculums (4 per section). Inquiry activities of Korean textbooks mostly fall on the interpretation of diagrams and graphs whereas those of the U.S. textbooks more hands-on experiment, data transformation and self designing. As for the number of inquiry process skills per inquiry activity, Korean curriculums contain an average of 1.8 whereas the American ones 3. It suggests that the U.S. textbooks require more integrated process skills than the Korean earth science curriculums. In the process skills of all textbooks studied, the highest frequent elements were inferring and data interpretation; the percentage of these two elements was an average of 73.3% in Korean textbooks and 46.2% in the U.S. This suggests that the Korean textbooks emphasize the process skill on particular area, and uneven distribution of elements of process skills may hinder the development of integration ability of students. particularly in the integrated process skills, the U.S. textbooks presented all 7 elements, while Korean ones presented only 2 to 4 elements, indicating that the Korean textbooks may have weak points in providing various inquiry activities for students compared to the American textbooks. In inquiry context analysis, Korean curriculums provide simplistic inquiry contexts and low applicability to real life whereas the U.S. curriculums provide more integrated inquiry contexts and high applicability to real life.

  • Until now, Academic disciplines were categorized according to the standards of the National Research Foundation of Korea, and this categorization has contributed to the development of each disciplines. However, as time goes by, there is a need for a transition to the new trends, convergence. Therefore, to suggest the resolution for pre-existing phenomenon and problems, this study explored the concept and traits of narrative science as a convergence discipline and discussed its implications and tasks. Narrative Science is a human science, based on narrative epistemology, and it focuses on human's interpretation, communication, and inter-subjectivity. Narrative Science has many inner structures per trait, and it provides pre-existing disciplines with narrativistic inter-relation. It also pays attention to human's inner areas. For the development of Narrative Science in the future, it should be free from a misunderstanding as a narratology discipline or a methodology of qualitative research. Under this change, Narrative Science discipline areas should be fused in the perspective of human science, based on narrative philosophy and psychology.
