  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of grit on the resilience of elementary science gifted and general students in their daily lives, and to identify the differences between science gifted students in university gifted centers and elementary school gifted classes and normal students. The grit and resilience test was administered to 154 scientifically gifted students and 98 non-gifted students. Based on the collected data, descriptive statistical analysis, measurement model analysis, and multigroup structural model analysis were conducted. The results of the study were as follows: First, across all sub-factors of grit and resilience, the gifted students showed significantly higher levels of resilience than non-gifted students. Second, the path from making perseverance of effort in grit to resilience showed a positive effect, while the path from consistency of interest in grit to resilience showed a negative effect. Third, in all groups, including regular classes, the school for gifted, and the university-affiliated gifted students, the perseverance of effort in grit exhibited a positive effect on resilience, and the consistency of interest in grit showed a negative effect on interpersonal relationship skills in resilience for both the non-gifted and the gifted students. Lastly, gifted students showed a significant difference in the path from perseverance of effort in grit to the sub-factors of resilience, whereas non-gifted students did not.

  • This study investigated the effects of national science leading school programs on students' positive experiences about science (PES) and teachers' perceptions of curriculum implementation factors affecting students' PES. For this study, Test for Indicators of Positive Experiences about Science (TIPES) was administered to a total of 11,488 students from 117 national science leading schools and 1,315 students from 50 normal counterpart schools. In addition, a total of 105 teachers were given a survey asking their curriculum implementation levels and perceptions on importance and performance levels of each identified factor that was known to influence students' PES. Students' total PES scores and scores in five sub-components of PES were widely varied across science leading school program types. In general, participating teachers reported common curriculum implementation factors that most positively affected students' PES including 'science-related activities out of school,' 'student-centered research projects,' 'ICT-related materials' and 'performance assessment.' Based on these results, implications for science education were discussed.

  • In this study, we investigated the elementary school students' images of science class and the factors influencing their formations. 280 sixth graders were selected from nine elementary schools in Gyeonggi province and Gangwon province and the DASCT-C (Draw-A-Science-Class-Test Checklist) was administered. In addition, four students were individually interviewed in order to investigate their responses deeply. Analyses of the results revealed that the students' images of science class for four science subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science) were more 'student-centered' than 'teacher-centered' or 'neutral'. The students of the teacher with student-centered image of science class had also more student-centered images than those with teacher-centered images. Many students answered that the main factors affecting their images of science class were the experiences of impressed or funny science classes, the perceptions of wanted science classes, the active science learning experiences, the educational experiences outside the school curriculum, and the negative science learning experiences. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the science curriculum of Korea and Estonia with a focus on the chemistry domain, and draw implications for reference when revising the next curriculum. To this end, the overall curriculum design centered on science subjects and the core concepts of chemistry covered in subjects corresponding to the common curriculum of the two countries were compared. As a result of the analysis, first, Estonia specifically suggested how the core competencies suggested in the general lecture were specifically connected to science subject. In addition, there was a characteristic that the inquiry function, attitude, and value were specifically presented in the curriculum document. Second, as a result of analyzing the core concepts of chemistry, most of the concepts dealt with in Korea were also dealt with in Estonia. However, Estonia has a tendency to deal more qualitatively with broader concepts. The concepts covered in the chemistry subject exceeded the level of the common curriculum in Korea, but this subject also had the characteristic of attempting a qualitative approach.
