  • The purpose of this study is to analyze what constitutes the sympathetic component of nurses care of dementia patients. For this study, 219 nurses in nursing dementia patients were treated in nursing hospitals. Using the Empathy Consensus Rating Scale (ECRS), basic model extraction, model modification, and model suitability verification were performed through factor structure search and confirmation factor analysis (CFA). The results of this study confirmed the validity and reliability of the constituents with 49 questions, including 3 factors including the acceptance of other emotions, the suppression of one's own emotions, and the exchange and interaction of emotions. According to these results, it is expected that the ECRS that can secure validity and reliability can be used for the study to confirm the nurse's Empathy in the dementia patients' nursing field.

  • The current study investigates the impacts of empathic concern, as a personal trait, and rational/emotional appeal on responses over the campaigns to help the disabled. Empathic concern is an emotional personality known as strongly activating altruistic motivations. The experiment proceeded at two stages that in the first stage, the personal disposition was measured and in the second stage, the condition of appeal type was presented. Thus, the whole experimental design was empathic concern(2) ${\times}$ appeal type(2) on attitudes and behavioral intention. Individuals high in empathic concern showed higher ratings, compared to people low, on attitudes and behavioral intention in the condition of rational appeal. The difference between high and low empathic concern in the condition of emotional appeal was small.

  • The goal of this study is to present quantification method for empathy. The micro-movement technology (non-contact sensing method) was used to identify empathy level. Participants were first divided into two groups: Empathized and not empathized. Then, the upper body data of participants were collected utilizing web-cam when participants carried expression tasks. The data were analyzed and categorized into 0.5 Hz, 1 Hz, 3 Hz, 5 Hz, 15 Hz. The average movement, variation, and synchronization of the movement were then compared. The results showed a low average movement and variation in a group who empathized. Also, the participants, who empathized, synchronized their movement during the task. This indicates that the people concentrates with each other when empathy has been established and show different levels of movement. These findings suggest the possibility of empathy quantification using non-contact sensing method.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among burnout, compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and social support of clinical dental hygienists. The subjects in the study were 313 dental hygienist who were randomly selected in dental clinic and hospital, which were located in Daejeon, South and North Chungcheong province. Data were gathered using structured questionnaires from June 17 to July 31, 2013. The major findings of the study were as follows: 1. As for burnout by general characteristics, there were statistically significant difference according to age, marital status, clinical career, agency work type and job position. 2. The relationship of burnout and other variables was analyzed, and compassion fatigue had a significant positive effect on burnout, and compassion satisfaction and social support had negative effects on burnout. 3. As a result of analyzing which variables affected burnout, it's found that burnout were under the influence of agency work type, compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and social support. These variables made a 56.9% prediction of burnout. These findings provide strong empirical evidence for the importance of compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and social support in explaining burnout of clinical dental hygienists. Therefore, the effective human resource management programs should be developed to consideration with the dental hygienist work environment and the quality of service.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of clinical trainings in improving empathy in dental students by analyzing changes in empathy level before and after clinical training. Third grade dental students at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) participated for 2 years. They had clinical training for 3 weeks in pediatric dentistry at JBNU Dental Hospital. Then, 20 items of the modified form of Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Profession Students Version were done twice, before and after clinical training. The students who had lectures and role-playing were in the experimental group, while those who had no additional trainings were in the control group. Out of 69 students, 35 were in the experimental group and 34 were in the control group. Empathy level has increased after clinical training in both groups, but only the experimental group showed a significant increase (p = 0.0052). It also showed a significant increase in specific items (No. 6, 9, 10, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20) compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Clinical trainings such as lectures and role playing might have increased empathy levels related to standing in patient's position. Therefore, it is necessary to consider, try, and evaluate various types of clinical training rather than common education to improve dental students' empathy.

  • Prior research suggested that people generally show stronger intentions to help in-group members because people experience higher levels of empathy for those who are similar to themselves. The present research demonstrated that one's levels of cosmopolitanism would moderate the mediating role of empathy on the relationship between cultural similarities and helping intentions. In particular, it was examined how the mediator (empathy) affected the relation between cultural similarity and helping intention for participants with low to high levels of cosmopolitanism. Results indicated that participants with lower levels of cosmopolitanism showed stronger empathy as targets are more culturally similar to participants' own culture. Participants with higher levels of cosmopolitanism, however, reported the same levels of empathy regardless of targets' cultural similarity. The implications and limitations of the results were discussed.

  • This study was conducted in order to examine the effects of humanistic knowledge and empathy ability on cultural competence of nursing students. A convenience sample of 250 nursing students were recruited. The average scores were 2.50 for humanistic knowledge, 3.40 for empathy ability, and 3.33 for cultural competence. Humanistic knowledge had positive correlation with cultural competence. Also, the empathy ability was positively correlated with humanistic knowledge and cultural competence. Finally, cultural competence, empathy ability and level of academic score have shown to influence cultural competence. The research founds that humanistic knowledge, empathy ability and level of academic score influenced cultural competence of nursing students. Therefore, this study provides the basic information for improving the curriculum and quality of nursing for nursing students' cultural competency enhancement.

  • This study seeks to verify how empathic concern and perspective-taking predict happiness by investigating the mediating effects of cognitive reappraisal. Online surveys about empathic concern, perspective-taking, cognitive reappraisal, and happiness were conducted by 336 adult subjects. First, the correlation analysis indicated that empathic concern and perspective-taking significantly predicted cognitive reappraisal and happiness, respectively. Second, cognitive reappraisal also significantly predicted happiness. Third, the cognitive reappraisal mediated the association between empathic concern and happiness and between perspective-taking and happiness. Specifically, people who emotionally and cognitively empathize with others reported higher levels of cognitive reappraisal, which allowed them to experience higher levels of happiness. These findings have confirmed that people can increase their happiness by enhancing cognitive reappraisal through emotional and cognitive empathy. Finally, the implications and limitations of the present research are discussed.

  • This study examined the empathy relationship experiences of adolescents in relationships with school social workers. The researchers conducted individual interviews with 10 adolescents from low-SES families. The primary interview query was 'What have empathy relationship experiences with school social workers meant to you?' Interview responses were coded and the results were analyzed using phenomenological research methods. The empathy experiences of adolescents were identified as the following: 'tried to build empathy','understanding another's feelings', 'helpfulness'. The study's results summarized the adolescents' feelings of empathy resulting from their interactions with school social workers. In conclusion, the study suggested some useful strategies for school social workers in their work with adolescents from low-SES families. These strategies are designed to maximize adolescents' ability to feel empathy for others. Furthermore, based on the results of this study the researchers suggest some promising avenues for empathy research in various fields.
