  • This study was conducted to find the effects of microclimates such as air and soil temperature, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) on the berry development and physiological property between cultivation conditions (open field and rain shelter house) in 'Northland' blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum). The rate of berry growth and development was stimulated in plants grown in rain shelter house, thus, berry reached to the ripe stage about one week earlier than those in open field. Berry weight and size at ripe stage seemed not affected by microclimates. However, total soluble solids content was higher in berries from open field whereas the titratable acidity was significantly higher in berries grown in rain shelter house. Berry firmness at ripe stage was little affected by growing condition. Total anthocyanin content of ripe berries was higher in berries harvested from rain shelter house. Total phenolics content and anti-oxidation activity of berries were higher in open field than those of rain shelter house during berry development but no differences were found at ripe berries.

  • The striped fruit fly, Zeugodacus scutellata (Diptera: Tephritidae), is one of important pests in Cucurbitaceae plants. The cuelure is currently using with various forms for surveillance to the Z. scutellata male as well as Z. cucurbitae, Z. tau, and Bactrocera tryoni, which are categorized as prohibited-quarantine fruit flies in Korea. This study was conducted to verify the attraction effect of applying the cuelure in different forms in field conditions. In this study, we used cuelure by 3 different forms as solid, liquid, and wax to striped fruit flies using the Steiner trap. The trap was placed in two Jeju and one Gyeongbuk regions and the number of attracted flies by each cuelure form is monitored by every 2 weeks during 2021. Attraction effect on Z. scutellata was significant difference by different cuelure forms in two Jeju regions. Liquid and wax forms of cuelure showed high attraction number to the Z. scutellata male compared with solid form when flies were occurred with high population from July to August in Jeju. However, there was no significant difference on attraction effect at low population in Juju and Gyeongbuk by different forms. Based on field assay, liquid and wax form of cuelure are recommended for surveillance against Z. scutellata male. Furthermore, these results also strongly suggest that the attractant, liquid and wax forms of cuelure, could be effective for surveillance to quarantine fruit flies such as Z. cucurbitae, Z. tau, and B. tryoni in Korea.

  • We investigated the effects of organic mulches on the tree and fruit qualities of "Niitaka" (Pyrus pyriforia) pear trees. Trees grown with rice straw mulch had significantly greater potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca) concentrations in leaves compared with control trees and those mulched using bark or polyethylene, but the concentrations were below the recommended levels for these nutrients in pear leaves. Bark mulch increased fruit firmness and soluble solid (SS) levels, compared with rice straw mulch. The fruit of trees grown with bark mulch had a higher ratio of SS to total acidity in fresh fruit, and the fruit was dark red in color. The K and Ca concentrations were highest in fruit grown on trees mulched with rice straw and bark, respectively, and competition between the levels of these cations was evident in fresh fruit. Bark and rice straw mulches increased overall fruit quality, and reduced fruit stone size, whereas a polyethylene mulch, devoid of organic material, resulted in a fruit stone size similar to that of the control.

  • The Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, has been designated as a main quarantine insect pest. Sensitive monitoring and diagnosis against B. dorsalis are required for early quarantine treatment. This study formulated a wax type dispenser containing methyl eugenol and biopesticide to attract and kill this insect. It also developed diagnostic PCR primers against five major quarantine fruit flies of B. dorsalis, B. cucurbitae, B. tryoni, B. latifrons, and Ceratitis capitata. The lure and diagnostic primers were evaluated in a field located in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

  • Out of 60 quarantine insect pests in Korea, 42 species are classified into tephritid fruit flies. Most of these fruit flies are attracted to two natural products, methyl eugenol (ME) or raspberry ketone. Paraffin wax has been devised to formulate these lures. The formulated lures were applied to field test in Taiwan to attract quarantine fruit flies. Wax-ME formulation was installed in Delta trap and could attract 60-80 males of B. dorsalis per day during late August, while a wax formulation of Cue-lure (a methylated compound of raspberry ketone) attracted both B. cucurbitae and B. tau. These wax formulations can be applied to monitor these three quarantine species in Korea.

  • Two tephritid fruit flies are infesting pumpkins in Korea. Both are classified into genus of Zeugodacus. The striped fruit fly, Z. scutellata, males are attracted to a lure called Cuelure (CL), which has been used to monitor the occurrence of this fruit fly in the crop field. In contrast, no effective male lure was not developed to monitor the pumpkin fruit fly, Z. depressa. Protein diet lure has been used to attract females of most fruit flies. The addition of terpinyl acetate (TA) was effective to increase the attractiveness of Z. depressa. This study aimed to monitor the occurrence of Z. depressa in pumpkin field with TA-protein diet lure. To validate the efficiency of TA-protein diet lure, Z. scutellata was monitored in a year of 2019 using CL and TA-protein diet lures, and the yearly monitoring data were compared. The occurrence patterns derived from both lures were similar except late season after October. The extended catches of TA-protein diet lure might be explained by the adult diapause induction of Z. scutellata at late September. Monitoring Z. depressa with TA-protein diet lure gave two peaks at mid July and August-September, in which more than 80% catches were females. Based on the attractiveness of TA-protein diet lure, its wettable powder with an addition of spinosad insecticide was formulated and sprayed to pumpkin crops. After 7 days post-spray, the control efficacy recorded more than 70%. However, the control efficacies decreased as the time progressed after the spray. These results demonstrated the application of TA-protein diet lure for monitoring occurrence of Z. depressa in pumpkin-cultivating field conditions. The wettable powder containing spinosad can be applied to develop a new control agent against two pumpkin fruit flies.

  • This study was conducted to compare differences in fruit quality by harvest time of 'Fuji' apple fruit that was frozen on tree by unusual low temperature in that air temperature was under $-3.5^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours. Fruits were harvested at 1 day before, and 2 days and 6 days after freezing damage, respectively. Harvest's soluble solid contents in all treatments was over $14^{\circ}Bx$. Firmness and titratable acidity of fruit harvested after freezing damage was lower than those of fruit harvested before freezing damage. During cold storage, ethylene production of fruit harvested after freezing damage was higher than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. The reduction in the level of fruit quality during cold storage of fruit harvested after freezing damage was more serious than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. The reduction of fruit quality during subsequent ambient temperature for 1 week after cold storage of fruit harvested after freezing damage was higher than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. In comparison of treatments that were harvested at different times after freezing damage, ethylene production and reduction in the level of fruit quality until 8 weeks of cold storage of fruit harvested at 6 days after freezing damage was lower than that of fruit harvested at 2 days after freezing damage. However, this difference by harvest time after freezing damage disappeared after 8 weeks of cold storage. Incidence of flesh browning was not affected by freezing at air temperature under $-3.5^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours.
