Blue Mold of Persimmon (Diospyros kaki) Caused by Penicillium crustosum (Penicillium crustosum에 의한 감 푸른곰팡이병 발생)

  • A severe fruit rot of Persimmon (Diospyros kaki cv: Fuyu) was occurred during the storage and transport that infected with blue mold in Sweet Persimmon Experiment Station, Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Korea. Fruit surfaces were infected with the fungus first and the colonized fungus formed mycelial mats. From the point of infection, fruits become collapsed and mostly ruptured. The pathogenic fungus from infected fruits was isolated and cultured on PDA. Colony color of the fungus was white at frist than became green on Malt Extract Agar and Czapek Yeast Extract Agar. Conidia were ellipsoid subglobose and 2.6${\sim}$3.8 ${\times}$ 2.4${\sim}$3.8 ${\mu}m$ in size. Stipes were 86${\sim}$320 ${\times}$ 2.8${\sim}$4.3 ${\mu}m$ in size. Rami were 7.5${\sim}$32.6 ${\times}$ 2.6${\sim}$4.2 ${\mu}m$ in size, Ramuli were 12.4${\sim}$14.8 ${\times}$ 3.2${\sim}$3.8 ${\mu}m$ in size, Metulae were 8.9${\sim}$13.6 ${\times}$ 2.8${\sim}$4.6 ${\mu}m$ in size. Phialides were ampulliform, 8.2${\sim}$12.4 ${\times}$ 2.3${\sim}$3.6 ${\mu}m$ in size. Based on the cultural and mycological characteristics and pathogenecity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as s, This is the first report on the blue mold of Persimmon (Diospyros kaki) caused by P. crustosum in Korea.

Rhizopus Soft Rot on Grape Caused by Rhizopus stolonifer in Korea (Rhizopus stolonifer에 의한 포도 무름병)

  • A rhizopus soft rot caused by Rhizopus stolonifer occurred sporadically on grape in orchard in Gyeongsang-nam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services and in Wholesale Market of Agricultural Products in Jinju city. The infected fruits were rapidly water-soaked, softened and eventually rotted, and the symptoms were initiated from wounds or cracks occurred at harvest time. Sporangiophores were $850{\sim}1,800{\mu}m$ in length and $12{\sim}23{\mu}m$ in width. Sporangia were globose or hemispheric and $80{\sim}190{\mu}m$ in size. The color of sporangia was white and cottony at first and gradually to brownish black, bearing abundant spores when it matured. Columella were hemispheric and $70{\sim}95{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiospores were irregular round or oval, brownish-black streaked and $8{\sim}22{\times}6{\sim}10{\mu}m$ in size. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth of the fungus on PDA was 25$^{\circ}C$. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to grape (Vitis vinifera), the causal fungus was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenberg ex. Fr,) Lind. This is the first report of Rhizopus soft rot by R. stolonifer on grape (V. vinifera) in Korea.

  • A rhizopus soft rot caused by Rhizopus stolonifer occurred sporadically on apple fruits (Malus pumila var. dulcissima Koidz.) at a wholesale market of agricultural products in Jinju, Korea in 2006 and 2007. Infected fruits were rapidly water-soaked, softened and rotted. The symptoms were initiated mainly from wounds or cracks occurred at harvest time. Sporangiophores were $950{\sim}1,900\;{\mu}m$ in length and $12{\sim}22\;{\mu}m$ in width. Sporangia were globose or hemispheric and $82{\sim}185\;{\mu}m$ in size. The color of sporangia was white and cottony at first and gradually turned to brownish black, bearing abundant spores when matured. Columella were hemispheric and $70{\sim}85\;{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiospores were irregular round or oval, brownish-black streaked and $8{\sim}18{\times}7{\sim}8\;{\mu}m$ in size. Optimum temperature for mycelial growth of the fungus on PDA was $25^{\circ}C$. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to apple the causal fungus was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb.) Vuill. This is the first report of Rhizopus soft rot by R. stolonifer on Fuji apple in Korea.

Control of the Fruit-Piercing moths (과실 흡수나방의 방제효과)

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the insect-proof netting, chemical sprays, application of attractants, fruit bagging and light trapping as the control methods of the fruit piercing moths in the orchards on reclaimed land in Sugyeri, Goksung, Chonnam Province, during June to October in 1976. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Insect-proof. netting effectively decreased fruit damage, compared as to the control, down to $9.4\%$ from $38.3\%$ in plum, $2.5\%$ from $53.0\%$ in peaches and $10.0\%$ from $29.0\%$ in grapes. 2. The control effects of chemicals varied significantly among the 7 insecticides tested: Deoclean, Naphthalene, and Thiometon were more effective to the fruit damages as low as $2.0\%,\; 3.6\%,\;and\;5.9\%$ respectively. while the fruit damage was rather high, $9.8\%$ for Demeton, $10.1\%$, for Takju +lead arsenate and $14.2\%$ for Padan. ,3. In the test with 7 attractants, the largest number of moths attracted and killed was 416.by Takju+brown sugar and the next was 307 by Takju+venegor while this number was 141 by mixed solution (see text) which is rather lower than expectation The fruit damage was lowest in Takju+honey and$5.2\%$, the next was $5.60\%$ for Takju+venegor and the highest was $12.0\%$, Takju alone. 4. Fruit bagging with polyethylene film effectively decreased the fruit damage from the inserts but brought about severe fruit rot and delay ripening. Meanwhile, paper bagging was less effective in preventing insects, resulting in $17.5\%$ fruit damage, however, gave no adverse effect other than slight Belay in ripening. 5. Light trapping was hardly expected to be a method of controlling these fruit piercing moths. However, the number of collected moths swarmed by electric light was 10.8 for can-descence, 0.95 for blue, and 0.22 for yellow light.

Effects of Chitosan, Grain Amino Acid and Wood Vinegar Foliar Spray on the Quality and Storability of Grapes(Campbell Early) (키토산, 곡물아미노산, 목초액의 엽면살포가 포도(Campbell Early)의 품질 및 저장성에 미치는 영향)

  • Sprays containing chitosan, grain amino acids, or wood vinegar, were applied to vine leaves of the Campbell Early grape variety, and effects on the quality and storability of grapes were investigated. Weights of grape clusters and individual bemies did not differ significantly from the values seen when traditional agnicultural chemical treatment was used. The percentage of clusters over 300g in weight was, however, higher after spraying with chitosan, grain amino acids, or wood vinegar, than after agricultural chemical treatment, Grape moisture contents, levels of soluble solids, and reducing sugar concentrations, did not differ when the traditional treatment and the newer sparys were compared. Among minerals, the levels of potassium, iron and zinc measured in fresh grapes were increased by the clitosan, grain amino acids, and wood vinegar spray. After 8 weeks of MA storage, reducing sugar levels decreased, and titratable acidities increased, compared to levels measured at the beginning of storage. This was true regardless of the method of vine treatment the hardness of berries decreased slightly over 4-6 weeks of storage, and increased thereafter. The weight losses of grapes were relatively low(0.28-0.35%) on storage after any vine treatment tested. Grapes from vines sprayed with chitosan or grain amino acids showed a lower decay rate than did fruit from vines that had received a traditional agricultural chemical treatment. Sensory evaluation results indicated that the marketability of grapes from vines treated with traditional agricultural chemicals was better than that of grapes from vines sprayed with chitosan, grain amino acids, or wood vinegar.

Effect of Temperature on the Quality and Storability of Cherry Tomato during Commercial Handling Condition (유통중 온도관리가 방울토마토의 품질과 저장성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of temperature of treatment and storage on the longevity of 'Unicorn' tomatoes of light red maturity stage during commercial handling conditions encountered while exporting over long distances. Tomato stored at $5^{\circ}C$ and $11^{\circ}C$ temperature with 85% relative humidity by pre-treating handling temperature that was using from field to before shipment as a winter temperature $5^{\circ}C$, spring temperature $11^{\circ}C$ and summer temperature $25^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. On the final storage day, $25^{\circ}C/11^{\circ}C$ (treated/stored) tomatoes showed the highest respiration and ethylene production rate; whereas the lowest respiration and ethylene production rate was found for $5^{\circ}C/5^{\circ}C$ treated and stored tomatoes. Tomatoes treated and stored at $5^{\circ}C/5^{\circ}C$ showed higher marketability, without evidence of fungal rot, decay or spots for 23 days. The fresh weight loss under all treatment conditions increased gradually during $5^{\circ}C$ and $11^{\circ}C$ storage temperatures. The higher firmness and soluble solids were determined from $5^{\circ}C/5^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C/11^{\circ}C$ treated and stored tomatoes repectively, than from others tomatoes on the final day of storage. In addition, $5^{\circ}C/5^{\circ}C$ tomatoes showed higher vitamin C contents than tomatoes stored at other temperatures, on the final day of storage. As the ripening and storage period progressed, the titratable acidity increased, but declined (P < 0.05) thereafter, due to over ripe tomatoes under all treatment conditions. These results show that $5^{\circ}C/5^{\circ}C$ treated and stored light red maturity stages of 'Unicorn' tomatoes are optimum to export because they show the highest storability and marketability. Moreover, the marketability of light red maturity stage of 'Unicorn' tomato maintained for 2 weeks in $25^{\circ}C/11^{\circ}C$ treated and stored temperature that might be the export temperature from Korea to Japan in summer season. This research result could be useful in helping tomato growers and exporters to get optimum market value by satisfying the buyer and consumer with a fresher product.
