  • Grain size analysis of sediments and soils has been regarded as a one of the most important analytical methods in Earth Sciences. The results of grain size analysis by 10 different pretreatment procedures in loess-paleosol sediments are compared in the study. In spite of the most powerful effectiveness of dispersant(sodium hexametaphosphate) on the dispersions of sediments, the effects show large differences by its treatment orders with HCl. It may result from that $Na^+$ ions in the dispersant may not be able to effectively substitute $Ca^{2+}$ ions in the sediments due to the electrostatic forces between $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions in the dispersant and HCl, respectively. Although $H_2O_2$ and HCl are more effective in dispersion than hot water, they do not affect greatly the dispersions. Therefore, the reliable results of grain size analysis can be obtained by selecting the adequate pretreatment procedures most suitable for the purposes of researches and characteristics of sediments.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tooth whitening and properties of an enamel surface after treatments with tooth bleaching agents that contained dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) and hydrogen peroxide (HP). Thirty specimens were obtained from fifteen premolar and were randomly divided into three groups (n=10): 1, 3.5% HP + 0 g DCPD; 2, 3.5% HP + 0.1 g DCPD; 3. 3.5% HP + 1 g DCPD. All groups were bleached 8 hours per day for 14 days. With increasing DCPD concentration, the pH values in the agents increased, making it less acidic. However, there was no statistically significant difference (p>.05). As the concentration of DCPD was increased, the concentration of Ca and P was also increased. In all groups, after the tooth whitening, the tooth color was found to have a value of $L^*$ (p<.05). All groups showed significantly decreased enamel microhardness compared to their baseline (p<.05). The percentage microhardness loss (PML) of the group A1 and A2 were significantly lower than that of group A3. The obvious variation of morphology was observed on enamel surfaces in group A1. Following an analysis of the constituents of enamel surface after bleaching, as DCPD content was increased, the amount of Ca and P was increased. In this study, the experimental results suggest that DCPD/HP agent less demineralization changes such as the erosion morphology and hardness loss without compromising whitening efficiency.

  • The quality improvement of the boiled-dried anchovy treated with acidic electrolyzed water (AEW) was investigated. The L value was higher in the anchovy treated with AEW than in the control. Moreover, its ${\Delta}E$ value was 5.08 higher than that of the control. The lipophilic browning degree was also higher than the hydrophilic degree. The degrees of calcium absorption of the control and anchovy treated with AEW were 10.77% and 12.61%, respectively. During their storage in the different conditions (five weeks in $20^{\circ}C$, ten weeks in $4^{\circ}C$, and five months in $-20^{\circ}C$), the lipophilic browning degree of the anchovy treated with AEW was significantly lower than that of the control at the $20^{\circ}C$ storage. The volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) content gradually increased as the storage period increased. During the $20^{\circ}C$ storage, the content of the anchovy treated with AEW was lower than that of the control. The lipid peroxide contents increased with the storage periods, regardless of the temperature, but the content of the anchovy treated with AEW was lower than that of the control. These results indicate that AEW treatment can improve the color quality of boiled-dried anchovy and reduce its VBN and lipid peroxide contents.

  • Nutritional compositions of three Tochukaso species (Paecilomyces tenuipes hosted by Larva and pupa, Cordyceps militaris, C. sinensis) were compared. Fruiting body and host fractions were separately analyzed. Fruiting body fraction of P. tenuipes (36.6%) hosted by larva was higher than that hosted by pupa (10.2%), an indication that the quality of the former is superior to the latter. Carbohydrate content of C. sinensis (39.6%) was $2.5{\sim}7$ times higher than those of others, probably due to the presence of polysaccharides. Protein and crude lipid contents of C. sinensis and C. militaris were 25.8 and 10.3%, and 75.1 and 3.9%, respectively. C. sinensis showed the lowest Ca content and $30{\sim}75$ times higher Fe content among the samples tested. Vitamin A content of C. militaris was 308.9 IU/100g, two fold higher than those of the other species. Saturated fatty acid content was the highest in P. tenuipes (pupa, 27.7%), whereas unsaturated fatty acid was the highest in P. tenuipes (larva, 83.3%). Aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and glycine were abundant in all species. Cordycepin content of C. militaris was $20{\sim}50$ times higher than those of the other species.
