A Study on the Improvable Proposal of General Education Curriculum of Engineering College - A Case of Seoul National University - (공과대학 교양교육 개선 방안 탐구: 서울대학교 사례를 중심으로)

  • Engineering Colleges in Korea have two educational objectives: 1) strengthening of speciality 2) cultivation of the engineering literacy such as the ability of working together, the ability of communication and creative thinking. In order to achieving these objectives, Engineering Literacy education was originated. The improvable proposal of general education course of engineering college is divided into two parts. One is American type that emphasizes on the general education independently of major. The other is Korean ABEEK's type that attach importance to engineering literacy. This study researches the case of Seoul National University that applied ABEEK's engineering literacy on redesigning the curriculum. To redesign the curriculum, college of engineering, Seoul National University reduced the optional courses in general education and had the students complete the engineering literacy. This device is effective, because it is able to keep the universal general education and make the most of major's characteristics.

The Comparative Study about General Education Curriculum of Engineering College in the United states (미국의 공과대학 교양교육과정에 대한 비교 연구)

  • A general education course is different from a major course in an engineering college. Therefore, they influence a learning outcomes according to their forms and contents. In particular, an engineering college in korea is open to argument against a general education course. Because a general education course has to observe the criterion of ABEEK. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to compare general education courses of engineering colleges in USA. For it, this study analyzes the completion method and academic area of a general education course. In result, this study suggests the property and implication of a general education course in an engineering college.

  • 기계공학을 비롯한 공학교육에 있어 기반구성이 없는 상태에서 1970년대에 도입된 실험대학제 도는 그 본래의 실험적이고 이상적인 취지에도 불구하고 시행에 있어서의 획일성과 제도의 통 일을 위한 경직성으로 오늘날 공과대학교육에 심각한 부작용을 가져오고 있다. 공과대학은 전 문교육의 장이 아니라 점차 교양교육의 장으로 변모되어가고 있다. 최근에 공학교육의 전문성을 대학원교육에서 찾으려는 일부견해가 있으나 엔지니어의 기본교육이 4년제 공과대학교육이며 또한 대학원교직의 특성이 연구적임을 감안할 때 우리나라의 경제수준을 고려하지 않더라도 잘 못된 견해임을 알 수 있다. 만일 현재와 같이 교양적인 기계엔지니어만을 계속 배출한다면, 기 술혁명의 와중에서 생존하려는 우리민족의 노력에 심각한 타격을 줄 것이 틀림없다. 본 학회 공 업교육부문위원회는 이와 같은 급박한 현황을 타개하기 위한 첫 시도로써 4년제 공과대학의 현 황과 교육과정을 검토하기로 한다.

The Study on Proper Way for Engineering University Education: Based on the Perception of Current Competencies and Expected Competencies of Engineering Freshmen (공과대학 신입생의 핵심역량 인식수준을 통한 공학교육방향 연구)

  • This paper is a study on the perception of current competency and expected competency of engineering freshmen by extracting core competencies acquired from university education. It also aims to suggest proper way for engineering university education. This study extracts competencies in the following five areas as core competencies: 'knowledge on major area', 'cultural ability', 'foreign language ability', 'basic learning ability', 'intercommunication ability'. To achieve this purpose, this study surveyed 'C' university engineering department freshmen (584 students) with questionnaires about their perception of core competencies. The results are as follows. First, engineering freshmen perceived current competencies were weak in every area, especially their capacities in 'foreign language ability' area were perceived to be weakest. Their demand for education is the highest in 'foreign language ability' area, and the second higher in 'knowledge on major area'. Secondly, there exists meaningful difference between perception of current competency and expected competency depending on the gender, high school department (science/liberal arts), high school location, types of college admissions, and types of mathematics in NAST. According to these results, this study suggests enhancement of foreign language (English) education in engineering department, design and implementation of various educational program to overcome individual difference, promoting importance of competencies in the 'cultural abilty' and 'intercommunication abilty', necessity of continuous adjustment and complementation for engineering educational program through accumulation of feedback processes, activation of career education through engineering education and special programs.

  • Recently, regional society requires engineers to understand the international affairs and to be global experts endowed with leadership. General education appropriate to engineers should fulfill these needs and provide wide understandings in humanity. General sciences education should be also reinforced for the students taking low level science courses under 7th education program to improve learning ability of the major subjects in college. A general education component including humanity for the engineers could be trained continuously from primary school to college under the 2009 revised education program. Various opportunity for education should be provided through the special curriculum development at the college or department level, which trains experts who fulfill the need of community. Multi-major program is a substitute for offering the educational opportunity to the students in environmental engineering, one of multidisciplinary programs. Emphasized criteria of the curriculum requirements and adequate contents of general education need be also developed for supporting the students to take advanced courses in major.

  • For engineers in the knowledge-based society of the 21st century, not only the specialty in their major field, but also the capabilities of creative thinking/reading/writing, of communication and of understanding society/business/economy, and the knowledge of specialized liberal arts, like ethics, are required. For the specialized liberal arts knowledge, it is important to have interest in a field, read the relevant literature, and summarize and express thoughts, but in reality, it is difficult to accomplish a higher level of learning outcome within the limited regular curriculum. In this study, an application for smart phones that purports to cultivate the specialized liberal arts knowledge of the students enrolled in the college of engineering was developed and applied to classes. Under this environment, a teacher can interact with teacher's students through the structured knowledge on a real-time basis in any place at any time, and the students can reorganize the knowledge by themselves. In this way, this paper proposed a way of improving the level of specialized liberal arts knowledge in daily life.

  • This study is for the analysis on the basic engineering education for enhancing the quality of engineers at a local engineering school. Negative appraisal for the engineering education by industry, the decrease on the number of students applying for the colleges of engineering, the changes on the high school education make the engineering schools forced to improve the basic engineering education. For the starting point for the study, we have surveyed on the current engineering education by asking questions to professors, students and alumni of Hongik College of Science and Technology. Analyzing the survey results and considering the needs by industry, we have set the basic educational philosophy as educating practical engineers and have decided the goals of basic engineering education as changing to student oriented education, enhancing the field adaptation capability, improving the problem solving ability and introducing engineering design courses.

  • This paper is a basic study of college of engineering freshmen's adaptation to college life, and the relationship between sub-variables of academic self-efficacy, learning immersion, and academic curiosity is analyzed. And based on the results, a plan to support new students of the College of engineering is suggested.

  • In this paper, the traditional curriculum model for engineering education, called simple hierarchical model, is critically reviewed and the problems of this curriculum model are discussed. Then a new curriculum model for engineering education is proposed to overcome the problems of simple hierarchical model and to provide an innovative education for engineering students. This new curriculum model for engineering education, called $\Pi$-structure, consists of the General Attainments Program, the Fundamental Major Program, and the Advanced Major Program, with the three components stacked in $\Pi$ shape where the first two programs are put in parallel and the third program are put on their top. The necessity, feasibility and various benefits of the $\Pi$-structured education system are widely discussed in the paper.
