Method: The participants in the study were elders using one of 11 public health care institutions, of which 8 operated day care services exclusively, and 3 operated both day care and short-term respite care services. A survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire that included items on general characteristics of the service users, conditions of the services, personnel, financial status, facilities, and perception of the tasks of the staff. Domiciliary care centers provided a wide variety of health and social welfare service for elders. Personnel consisted of 3 to 8 staff for day care centers and 7 to 10 for domiciliary care centers. Both types of centers rely on financial support from local government for operation. The perception of the staff was the need for operation of these centers by public health facilities such as public health centers and sub-centers. Conclusion: The result suggest a need to activate the function of public institutions to provide domiciliary care for elders. For this new change, the role as a social support system must be developed.

  • This study explores how married migrant women in Korea create social capital in their everyday lives, and how their social capital influences cultural acculturation. This study performs a structural equation model, using two-year data of female migrant women. The results suggest that network elements, including official supports from public organizations and unofficial supports from personal ties, contribute to creation of perceptual elements, including social trust, community involvement and relations. Also, these two elements of social capital have positive impact on acculturation of married migrant women in Korea. The longitudinal analysis provides a basic understanding of the creation of social capital and the relationship between social capital and acculturation of married migrant women and also clearly suggests the importance of public supports rather than personal supports from family or friends.

  • The effects of regular and active leisure activities on positive growth and development in adolescents are widely known. In our society, however, it is challenging to enjoy or expand such activities due to diverse constraints. Under unfavorable circumstances, this study attempted to investigate the application of time availability for liberal leisure activities as a way to help adolescents engage in active leisure activities. Specifically, this study examined the relationship between time availability (both individual and structural) and the time invested in leisure activities at youth training centers which support such leisure activities. The study found the following results: As both individual and structural time availability expanded, the time invested in leisure activities increased as well. Based on these results, this study discussed policy and practice implications regarding the support of adolescents' leisure activities.

  • Present study investigated the effects of poverty and poverty-co-factors in childhood. The effect of poverty status was measured by needs-income ratio. It compared its effect on children's socio-emotional development with that of poverty proxy variables such as recipient of public assistance, financial stress, subjective perception about social class, residence in public housing. It also examined the effects of poverty-co-factors after poverty status were controlled. Results show that poverty status has a more consistent negative relationship with socio-emotional development than other proxy variables. However, the relationship between them disappeared after poverty-co-factors were controlled. Findings from the present study suggest that targeted efforts for decreasing poverty-co-factor risks should be made along with financial support.
