  • Although humans exist as Homo Empathicus, human society is actually constantly divided and conflicted between groups. The human empathy response is very sensitive to the justice of others, and depending on the level of others' justice, they may feel empathy or schadenfreude to the suffering of them. However, our empathy to others' suffering are not always fair, and have inherent limitations of ingroup-biased empathy. Depending on whether the suffering other persons belongs to an ingroup or an outgroup, we may feel biased empathy or biased schadenfreude to them without even realizing it. Recent advances in information and communication technology facilitate biased access to ingroup-related SNS or ingroup media, thereby deepening the establishment of a more biased semantic information network related groups. These processes, through interacting with the inherent limitation of empathy, can form a vicious cycle of more biased ingroup empathy and ingroup-related activities, and accelerate divisions and conflicts. This research investigated the properties and limitations of empathy by reviewing studies on the neural mechanism of empathy. By examining the relationship between empathy and justice from a neuroscientific point of view, this research tried to illuminate the modern society of division and conflict in a different dimension from the classical perspective of social science.

  • YouTube, the world's largest video sharing platform, is loved by many users in that it provides numerous videos and makes it easy to get helpful information. However, the ratio of like/hate for each video varies according to the subject or upload time, even though they are in the same channel; thus, previous studies try to understand the reason by inspecting some numerical statistics such as the ratio and view count. They can help know how each video is preferred, but there is an explicit limitation to identifying the cause of such preference. Therefore, this study aims to determine the reason that affects the preference through matching between topic words extracted from comments in each video and non-sympathetic types defined in advance. Among the top 10 channels in the field of 'pets' and 'cooking', where outliers occur a lot, the top 10 videos (the threshold of pet: 4.000, the threshold of cooking: 0.723) with the highest ratio were selected. 11,110 comments collected totally, and topics were extracted and matched with non-sympathetic types. The experimental results confirmed that it is possible to predict whether the rate of like/hate would be high or which non-sympathetic type would be by analyzing the comments.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the effects on emotional empathy given by type and degree of adolescent participation in recreational activities, and investigate the associated causal relationships. The following conclusions were obtained: First, analyzing the differences in emotional empathy based on demographic characteristics, the results statistically indicated emotional contagion is a subfactor of emotional empathy. Second, analyzing the differences based on participation type, the results statistically indicated emotional contagion is more influential than positive sharing and emotional intervention, which are sub-factors of emotional empathy. Third, analyzing the differences based on participation degree, the variables influencing participation frequency, participation time, and participation period were positive sharing and emotional contagion, rather than emotional intervention. Fourth, analyzing the causal relationship between participation degree and emotional empathy, the results revealed that participation degree affects positive sharing and emotional contagion, which are sub-factors of emotional empathy.

  • Prior research suggested that people generally show stronger intentions to help in-group members because people experience higher levels of empathy for those who are similar to themselves. The present research demonstrated that one's levels of cosmopolitanism would moderate the mediating role of empathy on the relationship between cultural similarities and helping intentions. In particular, it was examined how the mediator (empathy) affected the relation between cultural similarity and helping intention for participants with low to high levels of cosmopolitanism. Results indicated that participants with lower levels of cosmopolitanism showed stronger empathy as targets are more culturally similar to participants' own culture. Participants with higher levels of cosmopolitanism, however, reported the same levels of empathy regardless of targets' cultural similarity. The implications and limitations of the results were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the Empathy Rating Scale by a third party and examine the validity of the scale. Based on the results of the pilot study, the study 1 focused on developing Empathy Rating Scale by a third party. From the exploratory factor analysis on a total of 15 preliminary items, three fators had been derived: 'Beginning of empathy', 'Process of empathy', 'Result of empathy'. The study 2 identified its validity by confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and discriminant analysis. Those three factors indicated the reasonable fit index by confirmatory factor addition, this scale identified a significant positive relation with authenticity, emotional clarity, and intimacy. On the other hand, it indicated a negative relation with anxiety attachment and rejection attachment. Therefore, the results indicated that this scale on a total of 11 item has a reliable convergent validity. Finally, implication and limitation of this study were discussed in relation with future studies.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effect of perceived parental empathy in the relationship between self-esteem and adolescent depression. A sample of 437 adolescents completed self-report measures of self-esteem, depression and parental empathy. The collected data were analyzed by hierarchical regression analysis. As a result, parental empathy moderated relationship between self-esteem and depression. And awareness of emotion, empathic emotional reaction, and cold emotional reaction of father had moderating effect on the relationship between self-esteem and depression. In case of mother's empathy, cold emotional reaction and excessive emotional reaction had moderating effect on the relationship between self-esteem and depression. The significance of this study is to find out the important of parental empathy for depressive adolescents who are experiencing self-esteem of low level.
