  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the fundamental characteristics of concrete with the change of reject ash(Reject ash=Rj) in the mixed aggregate where single grain aggregate of different grain size and aggregate of opposite grain size are mixed together, to analyze the possibility of a mixed aggregate system that premixes at an aggregate manufacturing plant and delivers it as one aggregate. As a result of the experimental study, it was found that the grain size regulation is satisfied if the mixed aggregate(CSb+SS) is substituted for about 5% of Rj. In the case of the fluidity slump, slump flow and air volume, it was found that they decrease as the substitution ratio of Rj increases, while the compressive strength increases as the substitution ratio of Rj increases. Therefore, it is analyzed that it would contribute greatly to an improvement of quality such as improvement of compressive strength if adequate fluidity and air quantity are secured by the water reducing agent and AE agent while premixing the Rj, which is disposed of by landfill, with about 5% of the mixed aggregate.

  • Properties of normal-strength mortar containing coarsely-crushed coal bottom ash considering standard particle size distribution of fine aggregate were investigated. Mortar containing raw bottom ash was applied as a reference. By crushing the bottom ash with a particle size larger than fine binder but smaller than fine aggregates, i.e., coarse-crushing, water absorption and specific gravity of the particles could be controlled as similar levels to those of natural fine aggregates. Workability and strength of the mortar were not changed and even increased when the coarsely-crushed bottom ash was added considering standard particle size distribution in Standard Specification for Concrete, while those were decreased when raw bottom ash was added without any treatment. When a replacement ratio of coarsely-crushed bottom ash was less than 30 vol.%, there were no significant decrease in dynamic modulus of elasticity and dry shrinkage of the mortar.

  • In recent, lots of researches for mechanical-empirical design concept for asphalt pavement are on going. AASHTO 2002 Design Guide in USA and KPRP(Korean Pavement Research Program) in Korea are under developing. In these programs, the mechanical properties of hot mix asphalt are a key role for design and analysis. Unfortunately, there is no proper database on the mechanical properties of hot mix asphalt, such as dynamic modulus. The use of dynamic modulus has couple of good advantages which is based on temperature, traffic loading and frequency on pavement. In this research, the verification of the relationship between maximum nominal aggregate size and dynamic modulus has been carried out. Also, test specimen size effect on dynamic modulus has been conducted. Considering the limitation of laboratory testing machine in Korea, test specimen with 100mm diameter and 150mm height is recommended for dynamic modulus test. Also, as the maximum nominal aggregate size increases, the dynamic modulus of hot mix asphalt increases.

  • There are two ways to reduce cement content for a given quality level(strength, workability etc.) in concrete. First, reducing the required paste volume by varying the shape or the grading of aggregates. Secondly, holding the paste volume constant while replacing cement volume with mineral admixtures or mineral fillers. And It will also be proved that the required minimum paste volume is independent of the paste composition, provided the paste composition is in a reasonable range. In this study, therefore, we have an object to determine the required minimum paste volume for a given workability level. For this purpose, we tried the following experiments: vary the paste volume for the three different grading of aggregates and determine the minimum paste volume to achieve a certain level of workability with high-range water reducing admixture.

  • The artificial aggregate composing of coal bottom ash and waste catalyst slag (7 : 3, wt%) were fabricated using direct sintering method and, the bloating properties of aggregates were investigated as a function of raw material particle size and sintering temperature. Most of the artificial aggregates sintered at over $1150^{\circ}C$ showed the bloating phenomenon regardless of particle size of the raw materials. Consequently, the specific gravity of the aggregates was drastically decreased to below 1.4. The aggregates containing waste catalyst slag of $90{\mu}m$ under among the W-series specimens, however, did not show the noticeable bloating phenomenon. For the aggregates sintered at lower temperature as $1050{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$, the specific gravity increased with particle size of raw materials. Also, the water absorption of all aggregates decreased with the sintering temperature. The aggregates fabricated in this study met the lightweight aggregate standard showing the specific gravity 1.7~1.4 and water absorption 8~19 % and, therefore, can be applicable for the various fields.

  • The paper investigates environmental hazards and characteristics of the artificial lightweight aggregate manufactured by using dyestuff sludge from dyeing industrial complex. The dyestuff sludge used in this study is chemically treated with Ti and Fe salt for the purpose of recycling. The artificial lightweight aggregate is manufactured through 3 step; 1) Selecting the optimum moisture content by evaluating plasticity from the mixing ratio of the clay and sludge, 2) shaping round type based on the optimum mixing ratio, 3) drying and Sintering process. Based on KS F 2534 "Lightweight Aggregate for Structural concrete", the particle size, fineness modulus, the density, absorption, unit volume weight, stability and environmental hazards of the manufactured lightweight aggregate are evaluated. Experimental results show that the particle size and fineness modulus is out of the range. However, it is observed that other physical properties are within criteria. In addition, it is confirmed that the problem of the particle size and fineness modulus could be solved in the manufacturing process.

  • In general, there are needed lots of time and experiments for determination of optimum asphalt content and mix design. The experimental results are highly depended on the skill of testers. Bailey suggested the proper aggregate gradation of hot mix asphalt are a function of special size and passing percent of the specified aggregate to reduce the test errors. In this paper, the asphalt mix designs of 19mm dense graded mix and PA-20mm for FHWA were carried out, using Bailey's method. The use of Bailey method can cut down the testing times to get the proper aggregate gradation for asphalt mix design. In case of 19mm dense graded asphalt mixture, the measured values of CA, $FA_c$, $FA_f$ are 0.724, 0.440, and 0.455, which are within the suggested values by Bailey. Also, in case of PA-20 graded asphalt mixture, the measured values of CA, $FA_c$, $FA_f$ are 0.646, 0.476, and 0.450, respectively.

  • The aim of the research is improving the quality of concrete by using the alternative aggregate resources and recycling wastes. To make a combined aggregate fitted in standard particle size distribution curve, crushed sand from blasted rock debris was used as a base aggregate. Additionally, to increase the portion of fine particles, sea sand was mixed. Although these aggregate combination fit the standard particle size distribution curve, in this research, raw coal ash was replaced as a microfine. According to the experiment, by replacing 5% raw coal ash, the most favorable results were achieved in aggregate gradation and cement mortar quality.

  • The high-flowing concrete requires additionally or excessively more expensive admixture than conventional concrete. So, the concrete has not to be widely used in practical field due to the increase of production price, need of additional facilities, and excessive development of concrete strength in associate with addition of too much cementitious material even though it has more significant advantages than conventional concrete. Thus, this study aims at developing high-flowing concrete with general strength unlike high strength which has been carried out in conventional study. To observe the role of aggregate in the concrete quantitatively and to increase the performance of high-flowing concrete effectively, parametric studies were carried out such as W/C, s/a, fineness modulus of aggregate, contribution degree of particle sizes, and the effect of 13mm aggregate and fine stone powder as a partial replacement of aggregates. And the effect of these factors on performance of the concrete was evaluated by measuring slump-flow and gap of penetration height in U-typed instrument. As a result, it was found that flowability of high-flowing concrete depends upon grading of fine aggregate more significantly than that of coarse aggregate and is enhanced greatly as fineness modulus of fine aggregate decreases and the value of s/a increases. In addition, the application of 13mm aggregate and fine stone powder are expected as a partial replacement of aggregate in order to increase the performance of high-flowing concrete more effectively.
