  • The behavior of horizontally curved I-girder bridges is complex because the flexural and torsional behavior of curved girders are coupled due to their initial curvature. Also, the behavior is affected by cross beams. To investigate the behavior of horizontally curved I-girder bridges, it is necessary to consider curved girders with cross beams. In order to perform free vibration analyses of horizontally curved I-girder bridges, a finite element formulation is presented here and a finite element analysis program is developed. The formulation that is presented here consists of curved and straight beam elements, including the warping degree of freedom. Based on the theory of thin-walled curved beams, the shape functions of the curved beam elements are derived from homogeneous solutions of the static equilibrium equations. Third-order hermits polynomials are used to form the shape functions of the straight beam elements. In the finite element analysis program, global stiffness and mass matrix are composed, based on the Cartesian coordinate system. The Gupta method is used to efficiently solve the eigenvalue problem. Comparing the results of several examples here with those of previous studies, the formulation presented is verified. The validity of the program developed is shown by comparing results with those analyzed by the shell element.

  • A study was conducted to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete beams using Belite cement. In this study, fourteen reinforced Belite and control beams were tested. The major experimental variables are compressive strength(350kgf/$cm^2$ and 600kgf/$cm^2$)of concrete and reinforcement ratios(0.0086~0.0345). They were tested by three point loading method. Comparing with flexural behavior of normal reinforced concrete beams, the investigation were to : (1) determine experimentally the load-displacement relationships and the strain distribution on the section of test beams : (2) determine experimentally the moment-curvature and the load-neutral axis relationship of Belite ; (3) investigate the flexural ductility of Belite ; (4) estimate the ratio of the capacities of nominal moment strength as a function of ACI to as a experiment. From the test results, the flexural behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete beams using Belite cement are similar to flexural behavior of normal reinforced concrete beams.

  • In this study, a five-story steel frame was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to evaluate the effect of the beam-column connection on the structural behavior. The connections were designed as a fully rigid connection and as a semirigid connection. A fiber model was utilized to describe the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and column, and a three-parameter power model was adopted for the moment-rotation angle of the semirigid connection. To evaluate the effects of higher modes on structural behavior, the structure was subjected to a KBC2005-equivalent lateral load and lateral loads considering higher modes. The structure was idealized as a separate 2D frame and as a connected 2D frame. The pushover analysis of 2D frames for the lateral load yielded the top displacement-base shear force, design coefficients such as overstrength factor, ductility ratio, and response modification coefficient, demanded ductility ratio for the semirigid connection, and distribution of plastic hinges. The sample structure showed a greater response modification coefficient than KBC2005, the higher modes were found to have few effects on the coefficient, and the lateral load of KBC2005 was found to be conservative. The TSD connection was estimated to secure economy and safety in the sample structure.

  • In this study, a five-story steel frame was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to evaluate the effects of the beam-column connection on the structural behavior. The connections were designed as fully rigid and semi-rigid. The fiber model was used to describe the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and the column, the power model for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection and the three-parameter model for the hysteretic behavior of the steel beam, column, and connection. The structure was idealized as separate 2-D frames and as connected 2-D frames. The peak ground accelerations of four earthquake records were modified in a time-history analysis for the levels of the mean return period and for the maximum base-shear force in a pushover analysis. The top story displacement, base-shear force, story drift, demanded ductility ratio for the semi-rigid connection, maximum bending moment of the column, beam, and connection, and distribution of the plastic hinge were examined in the time-history analysis. The frame with the semi-rigid connection yielded a lower base-shear force, less magnitude, and increasing ratio in the bending moment of the column, beam, and connection than the frame with a fully rigid connection. The TSD connection was deemed to have secured the economy and safety of the sample structure that was subjected to seismic excitation for the Korean design level.

  • A shell structure, having a curvature with a curved surface, is an extremely efficient mechanical creation regard to the external load. A basic structural resistance mechanism is the structural system, which is resisted the out-of-plane direction load by in-plane forces using the structure's curvature. Therefore, it has a merit to make thin and lightweight large spacial structures using minimum materials. Among the large spare structural system, the rapid development of the membrane structures, cable structures and the hybrid structures are watched recently. But, this kind of structural system shows the unstable phenomenon by snap-through or bifurcation according to the shape of structure, and the understanding of the collapse mechanism by this phenomenon is very important to the design process. In this study, I investigated the unstable characteristics of the Geiger-type, Zetlin-type and flower-type hybrid cable dome structures, which is the lightweight hybrid structures using compression and tension elements continuously, according to the difference of structural system.
