  • This paper presents a fast partition decision framework for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Screen Content Coding (SCC) based on machine learning. Currently, the HEVC performs quad-tree block partitioning process to achieve optimal coding efficiency. Since this process requires a high computational complexity of the encoding device, the fast encoding process has been studied as determining the block structure early. However, in the case of the screen content video coding, it is difficult to apply the conventional early partition decision method because it shows different partition characteristics from natural content. The proposed method solves the problem by classifying the screen content blocks after partition decision, and it shows an increase of 3.11% BD-BR and 42% time reduction compared to the SCC common test condition.

  • In the application requiring the interoperability of different networks such as VoIP and wireless communication system, two speech codecs must work together with the structure of cascaded connection, tandem. Tandem has several problems such as long delay, high complexity and quality degradation due to twice complete encoding/decoding process. Transcoding is one of the best solutions to solve these problems. Transcoding algorithm is varied with the structure of source and target coder. In this paper, transcoding algorithm including the LSP conversion, the pitch estimation and new perceptual weighting filter for reducing complexity and improving qualify is proposed. These algorithms are applied to the pair of AMR md G.723.1. By employing the proposed algorithms in the transcoder, the complexity is reduced by about 20%-58% and quality is improved compared to tandem.

  • This paper proposes a novel algorithm for hybrid lossless audio coding, which employs an integer wavelet transform and a linear prediction model. The proposed algorithm divides the input signal into flames of a proper length, decorrelates the framed data using the integer wavelet transform and linear prediction and finally entropy-codes the frame data. In particular, the adaptive Golomb-Rice coding method used for the entropy coding selects an optimal option which gives the best compression efficiency. Since the proposed algorithm uses integer operations, it significantly improves the computation speed in comparison with an algorithm using real or floating-point operations. When the coding algorithm is implemented in hardware, the system complexity as well as the power consumption is remarkably reduced. Finally, because each frame is independently coded and is byte-aligned with respect to the frame header, it is convenient to move, search, and edit the coded, compressed data.

  • Current communication networks consist of channels with various throughputs, protocols, and packet loss rates. Moreover, there are also diverse user multimedia consumption devices having different capabilities and screen sizes. Thus, a practical necessity of scalability on video coding have been gradually increasing. Recently, The Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding(SHVC) standard is developed by Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding(JCT-VC) organized in cooperation with MPEG of ISO/IEC and VCEG of ITU-T. This paper introduces coding tools of SHVC including adopted and unadopted tools discussed in the process of the SHVC standardization. Furthermore, the individual tool and combined tool set are evaluated in terms of coding efficiency relative to a single layer coding structure. This analysis would be useful for developing a fast SHVC encoder as well as researching on a new scalable coding tool.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast motion estimation algorithm which is important in performance of video encoding. Even though so many fast algorithms for motion estimation have been published due to tremendous computational amount of full search algorithm, efforts for reducing computations of motion estimation still remain. In the paper, we propose an algorithm that reduces unnecessary computations only, while keeping prediction quality the same as that of the full search. The proposed algorithm does not calculate block matching error for each candidate directly to find motion vectors but divides the calculation procedure into several steps and calculates partial sum of block errors for candidates with high priority. By doing that, we can find the minimum error point early and get the enhancement of calculation speed by reducing unnecessary computations. The proposed algorithm uses smaller computations than conventional fast search algorithms with the same prediction quality as the full search algorithm.

  • In this paper, an efficient algorithm for computing in the MPEG/audio Layer Ⅲ (MP3) encoder is proposed. The proposed algerian performs a full-band 1024-point FFT by computing 32-point FFT's of 32 subband outputs. To reduce the aliasing caused by the analysis filter bank, an aliasing cancellation butterfly is developed. A major benefit of the proposed algorithm is the computational saving. By using the proposed algorithm, it is possible to save 40~50% of computations for FFT, which results in about 20% reduction of the PAM-2 complexity.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast decision method of maximum coding depth decision and reference frame selection in HEVC. To reduce computational complexity and encoding time of HEVC, two methods are proposed. In the first method, the maximum depth of each coding unit (CU) in a largest CU (LCU) is constrained by using the maximum coding depth used by adjacent LCUs based on the assumption that the spatial correlation is very high and rate-distortion (R-D) cost. And we constrain the number of reference pictures for prediction unit (PU) performing motion estimation by using the motion information of the upper depth PU. The proposed methods reduce computational complexity of the HEVC encoder by constraining the maximum coding depth and the reference frame. We could achieve about 39% computational complexity reduction with marginal bitrate increase of 1.2% in the comparison with HM6.1 HEVC reference software.

  • For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264/AVC video coding standard employs new coding tools compared with existing coding standards. However, due to these new coding tools, the complexity of K264/AVC standard encoder is greatly increased. Specifically, the inter/intra mode decision method using RDO(rate-distortion optimization) technique is one of the most complex parts in H.264/AVC. In this paper, we focus on the complexity reduction in macroblock mode decision. In the proposed method, we reduce the complexity of the $4{\times}4$ mode decision process using $4{\times}4$ simple square filters, and using spatial block correlation method. Additionally, exploiting the best mode of sub_macroblock in $Inter8{\times}8$ mode, we proposed an algorithm to eliminate some intra modes in current macroblock mode decision process. In addition, we employed a method to raise the probability to select SKIP, $Intra16{\times}16$, and $Intra16{\times}16$ modes which usually show low complexity and low bitrate compared with other modes. From the simulation results, the proposed algorithm reduce the encoding time by maximum 83% of total, and reduce the bitrate of the overall sequences by $8{\sim}10%$ on the average compared with existing coding methods.

  • In this paper, an early termination algorithm for merge process is proposed to reduce the computational complexity in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) encoder. In the HEVC, the same candidate modes from merge candidate list (MCL) are shared to predict a merge or merge SKIP mode. This search process is performed by the number of the obtained candidates for the both of the merge and SKIP modes. This may cause some redundant search operations. To reduce this redundant search operation, we employ the neighboring blocks which have been encoded in prior, to check on the contextual information. In this study, the spatial, temporal and depth neighboring blocks have been considered to compute a correlation information. With this correlation information, an early termination algorithm for merge process is suggested. When all modes of neighboring blocks are SKIP modes, then the merge process performs only SKIP mode. Otherwise, usual merge process of HEVC is performed Through experimental results, the proposed method achieves a time-saving factor of about 21.25% on average with small loss of BD-rate, when comparing to the original HM 10.0 encoder.
