  • In order to understand spray characteristics with inflowing air from the compressor in the APU gas turbine combustor, we performed spray visualization test by using ND-Yag Laser sheet beam. The sector combustor which size is 1/6 of the real combustor was manufactured. Turbo blower is used as an air supplying device to simulate gas turbine air flow condition. In the case of 75 m/s combustor inlet air flow condition, spray angle way increased and dispersed widely than without airflow condition.

  • A time-resolved two-phase PIV system using a single camera has been developed, which introduces a method of image separation into respective phase images, and is applied to freely rising single bubble. Gas bubble, tracer particle and background have different gray intensity ranges on the same image frame when reflection and dispersion in the phase interface are intrinsically eliminated by optical filters and fluorescent particles. Further, the signals of the two phases do not interfere with each other. Gas phase velocities are obtained from the separated bubble image by applying the two-frame PTV. On the other hand, liquid phase velocities are obtained from the tracer particle image by applying the cross-correlation algorithm. As a result, the bubble rises rectilinearly just after it is released from an injector and then has a zigzag motion in the far field. From the trajectory of the bubble, it is found that the period of the zigzag motion is closely related to the vortex shedding although the wavelength of it varies along its movement.

  • Recently, as the high speed railway becomes more common, new environmental problems such as noise around tunnels are appearing. When a high speed train enters a tunnel, a compression wave in the tunnel is generated and propagated toward the tunnel exit at a sonic speed. When it reaches the tunnel exit, a part of compression wave radiates as a pulse typed impulse wave to the outside of tunnel. The impulse wave has an explosive noise. When the impulse wave is propagated around a village, it induces a serious noise or other problems to the resident. In order to solve these engineering problems, it is important to investigate the radiation characteristics of the impulse wave radiated from the tunnel exit. In this study, the effect of the length and angle of the baffle plate at the tunnel exit on the impulse wave radiated from the tunnel exit was investigated by numerical analysis. As a results, the baffle plate greatly affected the propagation of impulse wave.

  • Maximum intensity projection (MIP) is a volume rendering method which extracts maximum values along the viewing direction through volume data. It visualizes high-density structures, such as angio-graphic datasets so that it is frequently used in medical imaging systems. We have proposed an efficient two-step MIP acceleration method that uses the recent CPUs. First, we exploited SIMD instructions to reduce conditional branch instructions which take up a considerable part of whole rendering process, so that we improved rendering speed. Second, we proposed a new method, which accesses volume and image data successively by modifying the shear-warp rendering. This method improves memory access patterns so that cache misses are reduced. Using the current CPUs, our method improved the rendering speed by a factor of 7 than that of the shear-warp rendering.

  • This paper focuses on a boundary surface based ray casting. In general the boundary surface based ray casting is processed in two stages. The first stage finds boundary surfaces and stores them into buffers. The second stage calculates a distance from a viewpoint to the voxels of the interested area by projecting boundary surfaces on the view plane, and then starts to traverse a volume data space with the distance. Our approach differs from the general boundary surface based ray casting in processing the first stage of it. Contrast to the typical boundary surface based ray casting where all boundary surfaces of volume data are stored into buffers, they are projected on the planes aligned to the axis of volume data coordinates and these projected data are stored into 6 buffers. Such maneuver shortens time for ray casting, and reduces memory usage because it can be carried out independently from the amount of the volume data.

  • This study used a water tank and wave maker to generate conditions similar to the real ocean environment. Given that the waves were properly generated in the water tank, a precise analysis indicated the quantitative value of the wave force acting on a body. A high-speed camera and wave-level gauge were used to measure the temporal wave motion and period. A series of artificial water waves were successfully generated using three different wave periods and amplitudes. Each of the waves captured by a high-speed camera was sinusoidal and did not maintain its shape properly without a wave absorber, but it was substantially improved and well shaped when the wave absorber was installed.

  • The temperature and soot of the visualized diesel engine's turbulent flow of the flame was measured qualitatively. In the combustion chamber, in order to judge the affect that the swirl current has on the current ratio two heads with different ratios were used. Using a high speed camera, the results were analyzed using flame visualization. In order to measure the temperature and soot of the turbulent flames like diesel flames, two color methods were used to acquire temperature and the soot of the flames according to the conditions through analyzing the two wavelengths of the flames. It was possible to measure the highest temperature of the non-swirl head visualized engine, which is approximately 2400K, and that swirl head engine managed up to 2100K. With respect to the visualized diesel engine soot, we got the grasp of the KL factor which bears the qualitative information of the soot. This study is dedicated to suggesting the possibility of measuring not only the temperature but also soot of the diffusion flame of the diesel engine turbulent flames.
